Why hasnt anyone mentioned that ALL individual management salaries exceed those for engineering, and there are always two or three managers (at least) per software developer so this is just muliplied. In our division at IBM we had 10 software engineers and dozens and dozens of managers for the same product (not including sales which is a different animal along with help desk). I guess if management is looking to "save" money, they are first to cut the lower paid workers rather than themselves. What a shocker, they are not even working for the shareholders best interests to save money, but are looking to save money and protect there own skins!
Outsource management, I wonder why that hasnt caught on, thats where the biggest cost is as far as salaries.
Ok, your response is so wrong on so many levels. You speak as if a company consists of one manager who makes all the decisions rather than the multitudes of managers who make the most inane decisions that require NO more technical skill than your grandmother. Also the statement that Managers have to have enough technical skills to understand employee problems is SO WRONG its just ludicrous, ever work for IBM, the ratio of programmers (you know the guys actually WRITING THE PRODCUT) to managers is 7 to 1, all of which are paid MORE than the engineer they want to outsource... jeez...
Engineering: Can we subsrcibe to X level of MSDN?
Manager #1: Whats MSDN, why do you need it?
Manager #2: How much does it cost?
Manager #3: Did'nt we already buy that?
Manager #4: Did you get the TPS report?
Manager #5: Lets have a meeting about MSDN subscriptions so you can explain it to me (because I cant be bothered or are unable to even understand fundamental parts of what we do beyond the sales brochure).
Manager #6: Did you get the TPS report?
Manager #7: Can you get a pirate copy of MSDN?
Manager #8: Can you train (insert third world country national) to do your job? We cant afford you.
To speak of engineering (especially software) as if it is not art in itself is nonsense as well. Its not easily measurable when you hit the real world. When you figure out a method for determing with certainty that a particular development project will be successful be sure to let the rest of the industry in on it.
I can tell you from experience with a fortune 500 company that its not a concern for the decision maker. The folks making the decision do not have to deal with it. They make the decision and engineering (whats left of them) or PERHAPS lower level managers have to deal with the mess. On the books, it shows a short term savings so that looks good for the guy who made the decision to outsource in the first place. He then transfers to another department with a higher pay scale. I have witnessed many times management make decisions to outsource a departments engineering and they are promoted within a month or two of these short term savings, and then they are sent to some other department so they can "save more money and work the magic". Most of the time the engineering group that is left behind are the real heroes, they end up doing twice the work thus hiding the true nature of these "big decision makers" who are nothing more than the most short sighted of bean counters.
You hit the nail on the head . Its funny how people would actually think this group is nothing other than a lobbying firm who works for companies that despite being incorporated in the United States, have zero allegiance to American workers and therefore the future of America's engineering talent and leadership in the technology sector. We are creating the Japans of tomorrow (Toyota is #1, sorry GM). Where the hell is these folks allegence to The United States? Are we supposed to become a nation of MBA's who could not hack an engineering or science degree? Would you look to these very types to tell us what is best for America to innovate or would you think that the idea of making a quick buck (PUMP AND DUMP BABY!) is more in their nature?
The article states : Suddenly,The Web Is Giving Eggheads Something to Watch. I imagine that "eggheads" a rather dumb epithet, could sometimes be applied to the very folks who designed "the web" at CERN in the first place.
My guess is just a commision from the anti-virus companies to make sure that the most number of computers virii spread easily is maintaind , thus keeping the anti-virus guys in business.
Go test drive one, turn on the computer and see what the folks at the dealership and the test drivers have been getting as an average MPG. Its not just me having a lead foot or something. The mileage on these cars IMHO is grossly overstated by the manufacturer as well as overzelous customers who want to think they are doing something for the environment. Factor in the premium price on a rather spartan car save its Hybrid features and its a loss or at best best, a wash for what you are saving in "improved" gas mileage. I did not say it gets 30mpg, I said it gets in the 30's. I personally rather see an all electric car with shorter ranges say 100 miles or perhaps better for commuting. The hybrid thing is a nice compromise for the oil companys, which own most of the patents on hybrid technologies, thus subsidizing the small loses they may experience from the rather bland fuel economy of these hyrbid vehicles which (unaltered) still require you to purchase fuel from them.
The article title should be changed to "Pure Speculation on why Apple Delayed Leopard for the iPhone". There are no sources, documents, statements within or outside Apple cited to back up the claims of the article, its just speculation by someone who has no more information than anyone else sitting in there underwear typing a blog at home claiming what they say to be absolute truth. As far as the type of stories that Slashdot links to, I would like more NEWS that matters and less editorials by nobodys.
Usually in film, if the costume is relatively simple like a robe, a couple of examples of the same outfit are made or purchased as opposed to other more expensive props which sometimes have only one copy made. Its much easier for different locations, safety of a backup, stunts etc. I would be curious what the provenance showed for this particular robe as being the one and only one that showed up on film, especially considering the ridiculous price paid.
I was not refering to trying to play through and beat in the first try. It was just that especially in the beginning the please wait while loading breaks were getting long. I forgot to mention that I was sort of dissapointed that the voice talent is missing in parts of the game. I thought I might have the volume turned down or something when the subtitles were showing but I heard no one speaking, so I assume it was intended to be that way. (although they do talk during the cutscenes).
My top 5, they are all XBOX 360 games, because its the only thing I am playing games on:
5) Kameo - Stunning graphics. Simple story, but its stays fairly interesting. Not the most original thing in the world, but executed really well.
4) Test Drive Unlimited - A brilliant execution of online play where you are dropped into what amounts to almost a MMORPG Racing game. The graphics are wonderful, but the characters look like at you with those weird dead eyes. The entire game is a map of Oahu, I just found it a little odd there are no people walking around. Kind of runs out of steam when you aquire the fastest car, but its harder to get cars in this game than in #3
3) Project Gotham Racing 3- Great graphics, wonderful online play (I watched the online games now more than Speedvision). Cool cars. I think you get the money a little too easy in the game so you end up with A class cars almost within the first hours of play so its more about medals.
2) Prey - Nice atmospheric story which unfolds well, interesting characters. I ended up loving the Cherokee idea (although before playing I thought it might be silly), it turned out to be something that drew me in to the game. Others have slammed this one, but I had the benifit of never hearing about it before it came out so I had zero expectations and ended up really liking the journey the game took me on.
1) Gears Of War - To be honest I think without the skilled use of HDR (the graphics CODERS for this were top notch) Im not sure the graphics would be rated so high, but its still AAA artwork and in the end it looks better than pretty much anything out there. Gameplay is really where the game shines for me with the cover system being a breath of fresh air and a nice surprise when you give it a chance.
Honorable Mention : Dead Rising - How many times can a game say "Loading please wait" ? I wish it had online play. I wish it had a better save system, I wish it was longer. I wish it would not tie you into the dumb story and let you roam more. But I like Zombies, and I especially like them in a shopping mall getting bitch slapped with a sledge hammer.
I dont want to say these are the worst games, but I sold my copies within hours of purchase or just deleted it:
1) Full Throttle- The idea of the rocket/gun/weapon on the car seems like one of those ideas that looked better on paper. After the first few minutes of shooting stuff I was reaching for PGR3. It may have been more fun if there were pedestians. The graphics are top notch, and the coders who did the crash effects really had something cool there, its just the gameplay for me was repetitive and boring with uninteresting/unoriginal weapons and cars.
2) TotemBall - Came with the Eyesight. I could not control it worth a damn. Not fun.
Name a country? How about Russia? They still have military bases in foreign countries (although mainly in Central Asia) How about India in Tajikistan? Last I checked they were on the planet!
We Christianized the Phillipines? Where are you reading this? Phillipines was a SPANISH colony from 1500's until 1898 and believe me Catholicism was brought by the Spanish missionaries and entrenched long before the Spanish/American war , heck, all of this happened long before even the United States existed.
Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico in the late 1400's, and named the place after John the Baptist. In the 1800's SPAIN allowed Catholics to settle the Island with Free land (Real Cedula de Gracias de 1815 (Royal Decree of Graces of 1815) swelling the population from 155,000 in 1800 to almost a million at the close of the century. To say the United States Christianized either of these places is not telling the whole story, they were already vastly Christian.
As an atheist I HAVE TO ASK -Why are you in such a rush to let Spain off the hook?
I thinking your missing the point thats its the lack of ANY reaction that puts up the flag. Like the test here, a subtle reaction is detectable even if the person is trying to hide it, but with these guys/gals - nothing. The part of the brain that controls these sort of emotions was not even developed in some of these folks mentioned. I think the point is also that, as said, you would worry about what to write. I would venture that this worry would cause some blip in the test. Some of these subjects did not have ANY reaction - like zero. An innocuous word like chair and another word like beheading elicit the same response with these characters which is basically no response where in others the harsh imagery illicited by the word caused a reaction. This cool head/disconnect can actually serve them in some ways, heck they may become a ruthless leader in the business world or something. This lack of empathy does not alone make any of these subjects a serial killer, but its a tendency seen in many killers, as evidenced by there lack of sympathy for the victim while the crime is being perpetrated. The point being that this anomoly of the brain combined with physical/emotional abuse especially early in life could be enough to push one of these folks into a criminal life.
They should do a second round of tests. There was a study that I saw on TV where the person was told to say whatever words came on a monitor screen. Words were random like Chair, Car, Field, etc. Then words were inserted in the middle of this like beheading, torture etc. Most people had a reaction (brain waves?) to the violent words but what was interesting was that many kept there 'cool'. In another test, they put subjects in a room and told them in a few minutes they would get some pen and paper and would have to write a 100 words on the worst thing they ever did in there life. A camera was placed in front of them before they would have to start writing (they never actually wrote the paper). While they were waiting the results were almost identical, pulse went up, subjects started sweating, but some did not. I can not remember the number, but remember being shocked by how high the number of these sort of people that exist. It was enough to make me think that I must have encountered one in my life. People free of the encumbrances of guilt about any action and compassion for others can be capable of anything. Anyone else see this show? I think it was about about what makes Psychopaths tick. They do not have to necessarily be a serial killer, I think the study was making the point that these types mixed with emotional and or physical abuse early in life make a lethal combination that many of us think of when we think of psychos.
When you say "they are now using to enrich nuclear fuel", you are deceptively implying thats its the same people. An important point your not mentioning is that your talking about about Pahlavi's government that it was sold to, not the current Islamic Republic Of Iran which siezed power (and in turn the Nuclear facility) in the Islamic Revolution.
Actually there are lots of folks out there that think all the things I mentioned are very real. I personally feel they are just slightly more delusional than the JFK conspiracy fans. As for the people laboring through dusty documents - Many of those people sell videotapes that say that the airliners on 9/11 were controlled by remote control. Everything is a damn conspiracy that they seem to have the unique ability of uncovering to turn what is seen as obvious on its head. Its also the sheer number of conspiracies that they seem to be "uncovering" which makes them seem delusional, even if on the outside chance they happen to be correct about one even one of them! I just wish the folks that see a vast conspiracy in so many things would just step back for once and look at the other real possibility that they are just trying to spice up there own dull lives, lives that without the benefit of the discovery the vast conspiracy of the week would not be worth spending the fuel on the black helicopters to follow them in the first place.
We are on the same page politcally, but I just wish the left would stop using exaggerations like imperialism, its so played and a turn off to moderates who the left should try and court more. Iraq is not going to become a state or commonwealth of the US. Slamming a guy personally because of tough decision you do not agree with is petty. Saying that he is a son of a bitch and should rot in hell is not only disrespectful to a man who was president, but distracts from your otherwise valid points.
"There's another reason why you should love your enemies, and that is because hate distorts the personality of the hater. Thanks for totally ignoring my point about identifing the issue and bringing it to the attention of the manufacturer before making it public.
Say what you want about free speech and such, people can still be sued (and usually for a lot less than this sort of behaviour) if someone ends up getting hurt from this.
If instructions on how to exploit computer security are ok, then why not instructions on how to exploit previously unknown airline security holes? They are both aiding in the commision of a crime Disclosing information to the people who are trying to maintain the product is ethical, not doing that first and telling the world how they can take advantage before the manufacturer has a chance to fix it, serves no purpose other than to see a crime come to fruition, even if you dont actually do the final deed yourself.
Not allowing Apple or any other software developer the opportunity to protect its users from a security exploit and then posting instructions on a public website that allow someone to commit a criminal act is at a minimum unethical and may even open this character up to a lawsuit if anyone is seriously hurt financially or otherwise (remember hospitals, cancer researchers etc use computers).
This behaviour shows another agenda beyond helping vendors (well perhaps helping one in particular).
I noticed that in Nashville, TN, when I was there for about 8 months. No turn signals. I think it stems for the attitude, if you are the only one on the road, why bother?
I moved to the "Bible Belt" recently because of a business opportunity. ugh. Well, its hard to ignore the huge number of pickup trucks and SUVS which besides being slow as hell, are impossible to see around at intersections, turning lights etc. It seems like driving for what is essentially a milk truck (SUV) and being a redneck go hand in hand and we have a huge population of rednecks. None of this really bothered me, but I did notice all the damn tailgating that goes on as well. I have a friend who has lived here much longer and I asked him what was up with all the tailgating and he told me every one of these Rednecks fancies himself as Dale Earnhardt "The Intimidator". Suddenly what I had been witnessing made perfect sense.
The thing I could never figure out is if you want to drive like your in a race, why drive something that has the aerodynamics of a bard door?!?
