  7. In other news... on Yahoo Adds Search for Creative Commons Content · · Score: 5, Funny

Microsoft announced today that they are adding a new feature to MSN search, which allows you to restrict the search results to information and works with severe license restrictions. A Microsoft spokesman said, "We believe that when you look at Total Cost of Ownership, you will find that our heavily restricted content provides a better value than works that are in the public domain. After all, Moby Dick is only free if your time is worth nothing." A followup statement attributed the confusing nature of the previous statement to the spokesman's overly tight necktie.

  12. Low tech on Normalizing Music? · · Score: 4, Funny
The low tech solution is to wire a small light bulb in series with your headphones. As you may know, electrical resistance increases with temperature. Thus, when the sound is louder, and more current is flowing to the headphones through the lightbulb, the filament gets hotter and glows brighter. This increases the resistance which limits the current flow and softens the louder sounds. Conversely, during quieter periods, there is less current, the lamp filament does not get as hot, and more current flows, making them louder.

Similarly, you can increase the dynamic range of the sound by putting the bulb in parallel to your headphones. Loud sounds increase the temperature (and thus the resistance) of the bulb filament, which diverts more current through the headphones. Quieter sounds don'y heat the filament as much and allow more current to take that route, thus making them even quieter.

You may have to experiment with different types of lamps to find which works best.

Maybe it would get wider acceptance if MS named it differently. I first heard about it a few years back, and wanting to know more, I typed .NET into Google. I got back every www.*.net website on the web, but little about Microsoft. I knew C# had something to do with this, so I typed that in. Google dropped the # and returned every page with the letter C. Then I heard about ASP.NET, and decided to look that up on Google. I got back every www.*.net/*.asp page in the world, again no useful info. Finally, I gave up and installed Linux instead. I heard that mono got me .NET on Linux, and so I looked up mono. I learned alot about being careful about who I kiss, but little else.

Following China's walkout, the resulting new coastal areas in central Asia are expected to provide new economic opportunities to the formerly isolated, landlocked region. A brief panic gripped the people of Japan, as China blocked out the sun for several hours as it stepped across the island nation. Geologists and the international community at large are eagerly waiting to see where and how the newly independent continent decides to settle. It was last seen striding across the South Pacific in a brisk huff towards the Isthmus of Panama. Panamanian officials have cautioned China to be careful as the newly mobile landmass will not fit through the canal and would need to carefully step over the fragile strip of land, which could be easily crushed into the seabed by an errant footstep. Representatives of the Chinese government could not be reached for comment.
