What "DRM" is that again? I seem to be able to play all my media without any trouble at all.
But really, the further you get away from M$ the better your computing gets
That's a nice value judgement. That is your opinion, correct?
The real upgrades are free.
Oh, LOL.
Most of the visual elements have been available in the nix world for decades.
This sounds thrilling, but you need to clarify it if you're going to use it as a bullet point. What visual elements have been available "for decades"?
The performance gain of moving to GNU/Linux is incredible
Really? I find a fully loaded KDE desktop that sort of begins to mimic OS X or Vista (and frankly not that well) to be very computationally intensive. Do you contend otherwise? Of course XFCE and other options make that better, but then of course it's up to you what you want to give up for the "pretty" experience. So this "performance gain" you talk about is really very subjective, isn't it?
Most people won't bother to read past the memo written by Bill Gates himself
Of course therein lies your problem. If "most people" are like that then they're really no better than you. If they're not, then you're screwed because your FUD is exposed. Sucks either way.
The article you read, is it the one that fails to make a distinction between a bug and a vulnerability? Because that's the one I read. Oh, wait. We're in the Spin Zone. Sorry. Um, "M$ Windoze suxxorz LOLOLZ LINUX ROXXORZ!!!one!!!1!" There, that sounds about right. Facts and reality are so annoying and distracting anyway. Who needs them.
Word Perfect - Anyone with half a brain knows WP killed itself by failing to ship an actual working GUI version of their word processor. Please provide examples of Microsoft doing something untoward or illegal in this case, please
Palm - Huh? You've claimed in the past that Microsoft "sued" Palm or something like that. Care to actually spell out what the problem is with Palm?
Anti-virus makers - ROFL, you call them snake oil vendors and bitch at Microsoft because "Windoze" is insecure, but when "M$" actually secures Windows then you're shedding tears for them?
There are other, actual examples of Microsoft behaving badly. You might want to switch to those instead. They'll probably work better than memes, urban legends and FUD.
They get a sabotaged platform that used to have cool programs but is now deserted
Do you figure if you keep repeating these stupidities you'll somehow make them come true?
This is no longer a matter of partisan bickering or fanboy ranting, it's court proven fact.
It doesn't really matter how you like to paint it, or how many infantile dollar signs you use. What Microsoft did and what they are doing can in fact be two very different things - and in this case they are. The search function in Vista is superb (not even my opinion, look it up) and way beyond what Google Desktop Search does. On XP GDS was the bomb, because XP search was laughable. But now that Microsoft has actually delivered a working feature on their own OS that ouperforms the competition, Google is scared to death. So, they have to go whine to the DoJ and count on the general lets-bash-M$ gravy train to see if they can pull it off. Judging by the comments I've seen elsewhere, Google is not winning any points on this one, nor are they seen as the victim. The fact is that the Vista search is simply better, and that has nothing to do with what Microsoft does or doesn't do, it's Google's own incompetence and lack of foresight that caused them to stagnate and fail to compete with something that was announced effin' five years ago at least.
Try to grow up. This psychotic hatred of yours towards Microsoft is starting to warp your perception of reality.
If this is false and you know it and M$ paid you to put it here
Hold on here. Ignoring the usual "if you don't hate M$ then you're in their payroll" drivel, are you actually denying that Google pays the Mozilla foundation for defaulting the start page and search provider to them? Seriously?
Your rah-rah sentiments about Linux are great, but you've obviously never had a job at a real company with a real data center and real computers. Right?
It doesn't really matter if you enclose it in quotes. Under current copyright law software is no different than hardware or apples or nail clippers. It's still considered a tangible good that is purchased and sold (or licensed).
Of course that's an unpopular POV around here, but wishes and reality are two very different things. Who knows, maybe one day that will change. But until then, a thousand slashbots patting each other in the back with "gee, wouldn't it be great if..." theories make absolutely no difference whatsoever.
The mood certainly wasn't as forgiving of the affected party when Slashdork ran that piece the other day about the Indian ISVs pirating Windows because, well, it was just too darn expensive.
Yes, everyone knows Bill Gates himself pays people to post stupid things on Slashdot (thanks to twitter, as always).
And I won't even address your reference to the Wikipedia issue, which is a perfect example of fanboy exaggeration for the sake of making an emotional argument. And wow, they "shill" in their own blogs. Unthinkable.
I suspect that for this discussion the "elephant" is going to be the FOSS fanboys, though I guess they're more often referred to as "zealots". It's interesting that the linked article only refers to the mindless dedication to a company and not to a cause. IMO the latter is the more harmful and destructive, and *much* more common on Slashdot.
There is of course the difference between being pro-Microsoft and anti-bullshit, especially around here. What should we call you, given your hilarious use of the dollar sign to spell "MS"? Sageful constructive critic?
Most keyboards that ship with PCs these days cost about $5, if that. The "higher end" ones must be no more than $10-15. Have you seen the ones that ship with the new HP boxes? They're basically a laptop keyboard with a numeric pad and the "special" keys on top. Tiny and fragile, and they can't be tilted. Talk about saving money. Those things can't be more than $5 in bulk.
If you went out and bought a keyboard you like, then by all means wash it and stuff. In my experience most people use whatever came with their PCs until the machine is replaced.
I know this is intended to be partly funny, but unless you have a > $30 keyboard, and very few people do, this is pointless. Keyboards are disposable nowadays. I go through two of the cheapo HP/Dell ones that overflow the bins at company's parts warehouse every year. As soon as they get a little grimy or the feedback response starts fading (I like mine springy, but quiet), to the trash it is.
I can see something like this with a IBM Model M or a Unicomp customizer or a happy hacking keyboard, but most people probably are just better off getting another one.
And this is different to Windows how?
Like I said, everyone can read posts and make up their own minds. That's the beauty of Slashdot, isn't it?

You linking to that post is hilarious. You figure no one will notice this reply and the subsequent ones in that thread?

Oy, I completely forgot about the Opera crowd. Certainly welcome to join =)
From W3C Schools, which we all know is a high-traffic mainstream web site like Yahoo or MSN.
Yes, all those people switching to IE7 are really starting to make a dent on IE6.
FF is a fine browser and no one denies its market share is growing. There's no need for this type of stupid arm-flapping.
If the Linux and Microsoft fanboys want to join me in the Asbestos Lounge, the popcorn and beer are on me.
I never mentioned "theft", and I don't believe this case with the IBM hardware is theft, either.
Oooooh, internet tough guys. Always good for a chuckle.

You've pretty much given up on pretending, havent you?

"Windoze" runs fine on AMD. Next?
