The easiest way to get new versions of Gnome software is via garnome!
Garnome 0.30.1 was just released and it features the latest version of Gnome (2.5.5), The new, non ugly file dialog (but not all programs use it yet) and of course, Gnome Applications, including Gnumeric 1.2.6.
It is designed for IA-32 Gnu/Linux, but it should work on most OS's. Download it now. And if you liked the power of garnome, you may be interested in the power of Gentoo Linux, which is like garnome for your entire distribution!

It is binary compatible with Qtopia. Buy a qtopia licence from TrollTech. Of course if you release your programs as open source you can still sell them. Many people have wrote Qt Apps and release the source for free, but sell binaries.
It has been reflected by the threat of Linux! Have you noticed all the lame charts/ads about Windows Server System on Slashdot recently? They acknolodge that Linux is a threat and they are FUDing it on our own doorstep! More reason to use open source software (see my sig for example).
Read this. Here is the problem. The kernel developers arent GPL zealots like RMS is, but closed source modules are a problem for them. If a kernel module crashes, and it is the propreitery modules fault, then they can't find out whats wrong and unable to sort out the bug. That is why since 2.6 the kernel developers discourage acccess to the kernel. By opening the drivers, drivers can be more stable on your system.
To those who say, but Windows DRivers are closed. They are not to the kernel developers. When installing new drivers you may of had a warning that a driver wasnt signed. A signed driver means one that has had its source code audited by MS for bugs, and is more stable than a unsigned one. Microsoft dosent like closed source (unsigned) drivers, and will warn you if you try to install it.
So if you want a stable Linux, don't load closed source modules into it. Dont take unstabllity for short term hardware support over stabillity in the long term. Encourage companies to open their source, or reverse engineer and stablise their drivers!
To all of you that wonder what the problem is, the fact is that it hurts everyone! The licence is incompatible with the GPL! Any program that is licenced under the GPL will be illegal to run on XFree86 4.4! Since the majority of Software for Linux is GPL, this is a big problem. It also hurts other operating systems thats why OpenBSD is refusing it too because a lot of BSD software is GPL! It is not a "hissy fit" (sic) like This asshat put it, mod him down!
There are no compelling reasons why I should upgrade, I am happy with XFree86 4.3. NVidia's drivers work great on 4.3, so need to upgrade! KDE 3.2 and Gnome 2.4 both work well on it so they need not worry. What reasons do you need 4.4 for?

Why not? It's quick and easy - only 3 simple steps!
* First, you have to visit Mozilla.org and download the latest nightly of firefox.
* Second, you need to succeed in posting a FUAA "first post" on slashdot.org, a popular Internet Explorer users website
* Third, you need to join the official FUAA irc channel #FUAA on EFNet, and apply for membership. Talk to one of the ops or any of the other members in the channel to sign up today!
This post is brought to you by Mookore 2004, purveour of ASCII cows, a proud member of the FUAA!
Are you sure you are USING a ATI Rage 128 card? I have never had a problem with an ATI rag 128 card on it. Linux even supported 1920x1440 on my monitor! Which is really nice and big! Again, if you are having problems test and report bugs. Mandrake relies on its community for improving its software, so get helping rather than posting on Slashdot about your problems.
Report to Mandrake about the Camera, They cant possibly try every single camera about there. PLease visit The bug report page about it. You can also try the latest beta of Mandrake to see it if it works out of the box. If it dosent, then report a bug. Part of the Open Source movmenment is that EVERYBODY needs to take part. If you dont report bugs and problems, then dont complain about them!
Most Modern Linux distros put an Icon on the desktop when you attach a camera to do it. Sure in the old days it had to be mounted, but its all automatic.
Try The latest version of Mandrake, SuSE or FEdora if you dont believe me! The ONLY people who say linux is hard to use these days are Debian users stuck with their 2.2 kernel and 2.2 KDE desktop because its "stable". Moderators, please stop handing out mod points to FUD.
If you liked that software, then you may Like to try e Linux, the Open Source Operating System! It even works on Macs too! See how easy to use and reliable open source is. Try Mandrake or Fedora as they are both good versions of Linux.
Lindows, Xandros and Mandrake meet your specifictations.
1 Lindows sells a DVD player for Linux for the very low cost of $5! For any distro. For writing CDs, use K3B
2 Linux has an online community, plus linux users arent that hard to find. Most have heard of linux.
3) Better wine will come in time. The most important apps already run well, the minor apps that use weird libraries will come soon
4) Most desktop distros use KDE these days, and KDE of course is very tweakable.
5) Yes, most commerical distros have simple language, with printed instruction manuals with lots of help
6. Most distros autodect windows/other os partitions these days, and KDE comes with a LILO configurator. Grub is a lot easier than lilo
7) Lindows has click and run, Xandros has Xandros Networks, Mandrake has RPMdrake (graphical) and urpmi (command line), Fedora has yum and Debian and Debian based Distros have synaptic (graphical) and apt-get (command line). Dependancies have been solved ages ago.
8) Both KDE and Gnome have a "tray", in gnome they call it "notification area", and they have standardized the tray so they can share each others icons See here
9) It depends on the distro. Some distros are lighter than others. But many legacy files are being removed (How many distros come with fvwm any more)
10. The other stuff is being solved too. Try Mandrake 9.2 and you will see that most of your points have been solved!
If you read the article properly, You would of noticed that it supports *upto* a 32000x32000, it dosent actually have one. So if you had actually had a 32000x32000 screen somewhere, it would work.
If you looked at the Actual screenshots, it is only doing 320x480!
I design my site to valid XHTML standards, If the browser cant display it properly, then it is BROKEN! I should not code web pages designed for BROKEN web browsers. Thats like putting ICE CREAM on the roads to cope with microsoft tyres. I desgign my site with css and transparent pngs, and I always put a firefox button on my site educating users about it.
Anyway, if you havent got fire fox yet, you should its the fastest, leanest most freindliest browser there is. Everybody is downloading it! Its so popular that Mozilla.org is still slashdotted two days after it came out!
You really shouldnt just code for one web browser just because its market share, you WILL get bitten by the other 4%. I have noticed many previously IE only sites get converted into valid HTML sites after I complained and educated the web master.
That would be like baring all kids from your shop because they are only 5% of the customers, its just not right.
I know that everyone and their dog here at Slashdot hates SCO, but is it really necesscary to call them names? It just makes us look like Mad Zealots. Youd think after the what the BBC published you would try and take this case more calmly?
Im FED up of people claiming Microsoft Office cant run on Linux. It CAN! There is a program called Crossover Office that can run not only Microsoft Office, but other top commercial apps such as Internet Exploder, Photoshop, Lotus notes and more!
But with the latest versions of the GIMP (now with cmyk), OpenOffice.org, Firefox (see my sig) and the Kompany there is really is no excuse not to run Linux!

If you haven't tried out Open Source software yet (shame on you, why are you reading slashdot then) then its time to try some.
Start off by trying an open source web browser, such as firefox. I have personally installed it on several machines, and it works wonders.
Then try some more software, Such as Gimp, OpenOffice, 7Zip.
