If i remember right the person goes to a MARS station and uses a radio and the signal get "routed" (relayed) to the states where it connects to a phone line.
from wikipedia "during the Korean War, Vietnam War and Gulf War, MARS was most known for its handling of "Marsgram" written messages and providing "phone patches" to allow overseas servicemen to contact their families at home."
"...was created in November 1925 by a few dedicated pioneers in the United States Army Signal Corps led by Captain Thomas C. Rives. His original intent was to enlist the talents of volunteer amateur radio operators as a ready source who could train soldiers in the then new technology of radio"
Sounds like they used or still use Ham operators
I happen to need to buy a new computer for my son going off to college
Most colleges have a VLK with Microsoft. My college of 6,000 sells legal copies of XP for $10 (the money goes to the acm) my brothers university 30,000+ you just go to the library give them your card and check out XP with the key printed on it, install and return.
the key is good until you stop going to school then technically you need to get a another key, and buy then Vista should be mature enough to use so keep your vista key around
I would have a serious problem with a company keeping a copy of my high school paper and later using that copy to accuse me of plagiarism. That is the situation where actual economic damages from the copyright infringement occur. I'm not familiar with the workings of turnitin, but I can see how this could lead to trouble for students years down the road.
That is what I am talking about. To get my CS degree I had to take ENG 111 and Eng 112
I found that a few essays I did in 111 I could take parts from and use in 112.
It would call me a cheater for using MY OWN WORK! If that is self plagiarism and I get kicked out of a class and/or college that is jacked up
I don't know about you but I try and reuse as much of my English papers as possible. I hate writing papers.
This would flag my own work as plagiarism. I would get an F in a class because I used the same paragraph in two different papers. Seems jacked up to me.
Even if I never used my own work twice on purpose it would eventually get enough of my work to notice the same types of sentences and would if flag it as plagiarism?
I had the same problem. My school sells copies of XP pro for 20 bucks on a burned disk. (not sure if it is legal, they say it is so whatever) I bought 2, one for my lapop and one for my desktop. Just out of the blue a few weeks ago my laptop said it was a pirate copy. I just left it alone and on the next WGA update my laptop now says it is not a pirate. Who knows. I talked to some other people who got the cheap XP from my school and some had the same problem so my guess is my school talked to Microsoft and got it fixed. Mabye the same will happen to you
I can see that it would make the prices a little higher. If you are on a tight budget like me being a student and you don't want to go the illegal way, I find OEM can save lots of money and you get pretty much the same thing.
Also, my math was a little off, it's more like $650 to buy Windows plus Office
I don't know where you do your shopping, but my math comes out to $369.47 for Windows Xp Home and Office 2003 Pro. Even if I made it Xp Pro it would still be only $487.65.
If you have a kid in school or are in school then you can get the Student and Teacher edion of office. That saves you an extra $100.
After my so called friend told my high school that I had cracked the passwords for the school and district. (they used windows 2000 and the admin account password was the district admin password, how stupid) they expelled me and told the police who charged me with a felony "Unauthorized access to a protect computer network" Luckily it was my first offense so I was put on probation and had to pay 600 dollars, write a formal letter apologizing and write a 5 page paper on "Computer Crime and their cost to Society"
All I did was get the passwords log on, log off. End of story, so yes they do tend to over react.
Your license does not give you the right to share it only to have and use it (how they say)
yes i know the eula has not be tested in court
Then just say your kid/dog/cat/mom/brother/etc broke the cd or dvd so you just dl it
that is the simplest but best idea ever.
They would probably ask for your credit card statement to prove you did just buy so so remember, buy with cash
I remember my dad "calling" home when he was in Korea for a year in the late 80's early 90's.

If they didn't ask me to do that I would have wiped it anyways. I don't like the idea that someone could see my data.
McDonald's had the QQPass Trojan come preinstalled on 10,000 usb sticks. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/16/181 1244
It looks like companies should start checking for this type of stuff.
