Everyone I know has ignored the Federal gun registry law. In the old days, all the pickup trucks had 3 rifles in the back window...22 for gophers,.303 for deer and a 12 guage. ( dunno what they used that one for.) The feds really have no idea how many guns are here.
You also must know that 1/3 of the province lives in Edmonton and another third in Calgary. The remaining third is spread around the province. The city people are very different from the rural people. All the liberals are in Edmonton, though some are sneaking into Calgary. They usually can't handle our redneck attitudes and leave within a year.
Yes it's conservative, but also libertarian. I have seen police reports from my area where the cops have laid 7 charges in a year. We handle things ourselves most of the time.
Liberals hate us. We're not very tolerant of "alternative lifestyles", we value families and we really do want to be left alone. It's the best place in Canada to start a business but not the best place to work for someone else. Yes it's very redneck, but you really need to see it for yourself.
As for that guy from Winterpeg, I don't know anyone who likes living in Manitoba. The winters are brutal and can last from September to April.
Buddy you're seriously mistaken. Looks like Canada is #3 on that list.
There's no way we spend more on military than health care.
I live in Alberta and frankly, I think it's the best place on earth right now. We have lots of oil, clean water, food, great doctors and hospitals and on and on.
The province is not for everyone though. We have very strong libertarian tendencies. People are nice, but also want to be left alone to do their own thing.
To the submitter: you want a place more free than UK? Come to Canada, specifically Alberta. If you can take the culture, you'll love it.
I think people need to mind their own business. If I want to run a network of XP and 2000 computers in my house, it's my issue. I have thousands of programs that run fine on these systems and I'll be damned if I spend any more money because some asshole thinks I should upgrade. One of my kids even runs a windows 98 box because of old games. I have a hardware firewall and watch the network.
I hate Microsoft for their business practices, but I use their software all the time. I still use Office 97, Simply accounting 9, Photoshop 6 and many other programs that won't work on Vista.
I have enough hardware and software to run my shit for the next 10 years. My last hardware upgrade was 3 years ago and that machine is the one I'm working on now. I can also still pull p4's out of the e-waste bin because people are too lazy to fix them.
Microsoft can kiss my ass as far as activation goes. I hate that and their Windows disadvantage with a passion. Stay the hell out of my house. It's not your computer Bill, it's mine. I paid for it, I paid for my software and I pay my power bills and internet access. I shut the windows updates off when I found out that service pack 3 totally screwed up my network and that I needed an extra gig of ram to maintain my speed. I rolled everything back to service pack 2, shut off updates and have reclaimed my performance. I haven't had any issues with my network since.
Since these software companies demand that we upgrade to the latest Microsoft OS, I don't upgrade their shit either. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I am constantly amazed at lemmings that upgrade because Microsoft says so when the stuff they have works fine. Fools. I guess lots of people like throwing money away. Office 97 and Simply Accounting version 9 still work fine.
This is my favourite piece of sanity:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
One hosts file, one reboot, no more problems anywhere. Shit google ads don't even work. They may show up, but you can't click em.
I just got tired of waiting for shit ads to load. I never clicked em, so I'm actually saving the sites money by not having to serve me an ad I'll never click. This also stops tons of phishing sites and other malware.
I can even use ie and opera and don't see ads.
I remember working in a prototype shop for an engineer in charge of developing high efficiency furnaces when they first came out. He said something about a customer, and I quoted the mantra "the customer is always right"
He replied, no, the customer is an idiot. If they did the math they would never buy one of these furnaces because the cost cannot be repaid over the life of the furnace. The customer would be better off with a mid efficiency furnace, but we don't tell them that, we're not the salesmen.
Or be like me and totally give up completely. How can I build a system from scratch, with good parts, and install Windows and be any where near the price of Dell when they get windows for $20 and add all that spyware, er I mean extra programs on the desktop?
It's a fools game now. Glad I bailed a couple years ago. I couldn't bear having to learn Vista, then 7 within 2 years.
The most fun I ever saw was when a small business put a Mistake Edition computer on their network. Unbelievable the problems that caused. After I "solved" the ME problem on the first network, from that point on, it was my first question of any new business.
"Are their any Millenium Editon computers on the network?" Yes? "Unplug them." Problems solved.
You must have read it in Quarks voice. I say Mor-man like Quark used to say Hu-man. Pretty funny actually.. well I'm amused.. doesn't take much... this whole thread has been a riot!
Copyright was so that people had protection to make a living performing their stuff. This bullshit now a days is so some asshole executive, who has screwed your mother out of her copyright, can make money off your mother forever.
How the hell did we ever let copyrights become transferable?
You wanna stop all this shit? Return all copyrights the the actual owners. The music industry would be destroyed overnight and this bullshit would end with it.
You'd think eh? I've seen a few drupal sites completely borked by users. Sure in theory, Drupal would replace webmasters, in practice not so much. I am waiting to aquire two updating gigs locally because the women in the offices hate the cms and the updating.
I know, this is my gig. I call myself webmaster. I can design and code the site, set-up the servers, edit a little perl script.. all minor shit compared to the masters of css that populate this site. (I bow to their superior coding skills) I make simple effective sites that my clients like. I use old school methods and don't have to spend 5 days making css work with all the browsers.
My customers get fast sites that work on everything, look pretty and attract more business.
Everyone wins, but I will be hated by the CS masters here.
I for one, had to add a gig of ram to my system to maintain the same performance. I recently reinstalled a machine and left it at service pack two. It has half the power and out performs my service pack 3 machine. [tinfoil] Microsoft is fucking up all my installs so I am forced to buy into vista or seven. My network problems have increased 10 fold after sp3[/tinfoil]
I have a hardware firewall, a good hosts file, open dns and good anti-virus. I am currently reverting my network back to sp2. The networking is a total pain in the ass after sp3. Shit I've gone back to win2k on some machines. The speed increase over the network is amazing.
I've used Microsoft stuff since win95, but they really suck shit lately. Why can't they improve performance with a service pack?
Back in 97, when I got my first cable modem, I hooked up to an mp3 site in eastern Canada. We used icq to make contact, then just met and exchanged ftp's and logins with the site users. I'll never forget Pumpkin, this chick had over 20 gigs of mp3s when most hard drives were 4 gigs. Good times. I had a 500 meg scsi drive set up on 1:10 ratio site. It was full every night! I'd take off what I wanted and delete the rest so the next night it would work again. I only ran it for a month or so before I had more stuff than I'd ever need or want.
Maybe we need a new way to trade ftp sites besides irc.
Xandros sucks. The company tried the Microsoft tie-in business model and failed miserably. Just die already. Ubuntu blows the doors of Xandros. Ya they were the first "working for normal people" distro, but they really tie people in and force their versions of software on you. The "free" versions are crippled, nothing worked from the apt-get repositories, in fact, you'd break the whole distro if you ignored the warnings and install something that wasn't "approved by Xandros" I hate them.
Die Xandros die!
I used to sell this crap back in the version 1 days. That one worked. By version 3, you couldn't install anything other than approved apps. This is the distro that finally killed corel.
I have a projector, connected to a networked mediaportal box. I watch "TV" on an 60" screen with my stereo for audio. Way better than any tv I've ever owned. All my dvd's are ripped to that box. All my other tv's and computers can connect to it.
TV ultimately blew it for me when, on a Saturday night, I was trying to watch a hockey game with my little kids and the commercials were for Resident Evil. Thanks CBC, now my kids had nightmares from watching a commercial at 6:30 pm. Assholes.
Now if I want to watch anything, I'll do it over the web. TSN does a better job, they take all the ads out of their streams.
Agreed. I use an old version of FIRST Page from Evrsoft. Dumb name, great editor. I've been using First Page 2000 since.. well 2000. They made a new version in 2006 I think.. after YEARS of promising it.. but it sucked.
I like it because it does sort of automate a few tasks, like inserting images, but the color coding of the code is very easy on the old eyes. I'm still in the dark ages with tables instead of css... but the sites are quick and render properly in most browsers.
Cat Scratch... skip... Cat Scratch... skip... Cat Scratch... skip..
Get this, http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm don't forget to go Start->Run->services.msc -> shut off dns client.
The only ads you'll see are the ones served from the site you're on. Helps protect against phishing sites too.

I have a server on the lan, accessible via the web that does automatic backup every night? What else do you need?
Turn off dns. Start, Run, services.msc, DNS Client - > disable. Reboot. Problem solved.

The furnace would have been worn out by the time the prices rose to make it viable. Customer is still an idiot.
Price of natural gas. Then it wasn't worth it. Today, oh ya.

Nintendo warns you that if you have "modified" your system, you shouldn't do this update. It can apparently brick the wii.
http://www.opendns.com/ and a good hosts file.

Lots more modules. Free. Works. I don't like Joomla at all. Everything cool has a big price tag on it.
