    As a matter of fact I didn't only read this article but many more since July 1st, as this wasn't exactly breaking news, but after all this is /. :)

    The guy said he was preparing to sue since 20 years, but only now was able to buy the shares back and getting the right to sue. AT&T or Lucent didn't feel like sueing MS for some reason or other.

    Maybe, if Microsoft hadn't abused its market power there would have been more progress in the field of personal computing. Ever looked at it this way? It always amazes me how little fantasy some people have when it comes to computing. Maybe that explains why Windows users are so content with their working environment and why they think of the promised new features that Longhorn is told to bring them, as if it were the best since sliced bread. Yeah, I'm getting to sound somewhat trollish here, but I'm pretty serious.

    Get Barbarians Led by Bill Gates: Microsoft from the Inside and learn some history. Written by a former MS employee it has some stuff about what happened back then around Go and Microsoft.

    It is a NeXTSTEP 3.0 demo Steve Jobs gave 1992 (previously covered on /.). It looks almost like my Panther version of Mac OS X in 2005! When I first saw it I was even more pissed of at Bill Gates who I see responsible for depriving us of OS advancement through MSs monopoly actions :(

    Hitler came to power, in part, because the country had been driven to poverty by the Treaty of Versailles. He turned the country around, built up a formidable military, "got the trains running on time," and gave his nation purpose.

    Urgh. Nope. Versailles had not as much to with poverty in Germany as the unfair distribution of wealth. Germany was in a far better economic position when he came to power compared to 1939. And about that "purpose" I would say he just triggered reactionary groupthink implemented in german minds throughout the Kaiserreich. Get Heinrichs Manns "Der Untertan", a relly good book about that topic ("Man of Straw" in english at Penguin Classics).

    Old radios in Germany were perfectly capable of tuning way under 88. They only had some mechanical lock that prevented listeners from tuning that fare. By removing the lock as a kid I could listen to police car transmissions :)

    LOL. No, InDesign doesn't have an imposer built in. Get a plugin like InBooklet. For soemeone who brags about knowing "the design industry" you are not well informed. And quick, tell me: Why is the company who makes InBooklet, producing imposing software for QuarkXpress as well?

    the numbers he quotes are percentages of hosts, not work done. How fast the computer is crunching through work units is irrelevant.

    Of course. What's your point? This discussion is about how many Macs are out there, not how fast those are. That is another /.-article.

    What I wanted to say was: You can't tell how many Macs there are by looking on the percentage of participants in a project which software is deliberately not optimized for the platform and therefor runs much slower on Mac than possible. But Renegade Lisp said that SETI@home participation of Macs would give a more reasonable data point than the numbers of the Software and Information Industry Association. I think this is flawed, because most Mac-Users opt for ditributed.net in stead of s@h, because of the reasons I cited.

    Notice how he said shiny new G5, G5's have not been around for years. So his assumption of Mac's shiny obnoxious colors could be correct.

    Hm. What he wrote was:

    The last colorful Mac was the iMac (Summer 2001). The G5 was announced in June 2003 and its predecessor wasn't what I'd call overly colorful either. That's why I smelled a troll.

Of course they are not able to reach anyone there in a timely manner because their email servers are down to virus problems. So the Linux user has to hack into the railroad system to activate a switchblade and change tracks. The windows users are completely unaware of any impending disaster and post anonymous comments to /. about how the tried to copy a 17 MB file from one folder on their harddisc to another on their freelance gig on a Mac G5.

    Seti@home was well known for denying PPC/AltiVec optimizations to their software. So the project was abandoned by most Mac user who then went to distributed.net. Read about it. Excerpt:

    "SETI@Home 2.0.4 was the fastest version of SETI for Macs. It relied heavily on the amount of L2 cache on the processor. Since most modern macs have 512K or 1MB of cahe it was able to produce results far better than a PC of the same MHz. But when 3.0 came all that changed. The L2 cache programming was removed and the speed was based solely on the MHz. So then Macs fell behind in WU times." [...]

    "The best part of RC5 is that it is Alti-Vec and multi-processor aware, and Macs crunch data 5 times faster than a PC of the same MHz. It is a great way to show off the speed of your CPU."

    I work for an ISP. I get maybe 2 or 3 calls from Mac people in a 5 day week. I handle more than 40 calls in a day.

    Now, can you think of any other reason why that may be? Like making an internet connection is the easiest on the Mac compared to all platforms I know of?

    Hmm, now this is a lie. Because for years Apple only made machines in white, grey or aluminium.

    Most PC people I know are more interested in buying a $600 video card for their 5 year old PC.

    Market share != installed base. Apple does not compete in a lot of markets where Linux and Windows are used. There are machines like frickin' ATMs running a version of Windows.
