Interestingly, the first time I remember the RIAA getting their knickers in a twist was over just that. They had a serious fit in the 80s over someone (Sony ironically) marketing a DAT machine for just that use. Most folks used cassette decks, and there were some pretty nice ones out there, but there were reel-to-reel freaks as well. I had a betamax machine set up in my system as a second audio deck. They were actually designed to be used that way and had better audio response than many cassettes.
That's why a lot of people would rip their vinyl to tape and play the tapes most of the time. Playing the vinyl was for when you were just sitting and listening to the music and not doing anything else.
This time of year, Perseus is visible all night from anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Since this is/., I should qualify that by saying you have to go outside to see it. The comet is bright enough to be naked-eye visible in even heavily light-polluted cities.
From TFA: "but there are a few words of caution. Be forewarned that there is a bug in Compiz 0.3 affecting the fglrx 8.42.3 driver and there may be a few other situations where Compiz or Compiz Fusion may not work immediately. The bug found in Compiz 0.3 and that's causing havoc with fglrx 8.42.3, has been resolved in Compiz 0.6. Next month in fglrx 8.43, AMD will be introducing a workaround for Compiz 0.3 support. "
Do they work passively/off sound energy, or with their own power source, or not properly until they're plugged in?? They run off a single AA cell. Bose.
Sorry, but I fly on noisy commercial turboprops a lot (EMB 120 Brasilias), and I wear noise canceling headphones starting the instant those loud bastards start up. Many regular passengers do. I don't plug them into my ipod until the "OK to start your electronic devices" announcement. I've never had any question from a flight attendant. They're all wearing hearing protection too.
>IBM ended up not suing because they were a 'Big Iron' company at the time and saw the PC as a way for users to connect to the mainframe.
True, but not complete. IBM also tried to get back into the closed architecture biz with their PS/2 and Micro Channel Architecture bus. There was a lot to like about them, but IBM had a pretty nasty licensing deal that kept them from being adopted by anybody. The availability of third-party sound, video, and other cards for the ISA bus pretty much did in MCA. I had a PS/2 Model 80 that was a sweet machine, but it would have cost a testicle to add anything to it. My next box was a clone.
Why didn't Apple just say that? Why lie? The rationale they've offered so far suggests that Apple does not plan to open the iPhone at any point in time as doing otherwise would damage their credibility. Sorry, but the price cut thing already damaged their credibility.
Why go to Honk Kong. Just go to the Chinatown in NYC or SF and you'll find amazing phones (I would recommend bringing along someone who speaks Mandarin). Don't know about NYC, but most of the Chinese spoken in SF is Cantonese.
I did college physics, organic and physical chemistry with my trusty Pickett aluminum log-log slide rule. You needed one for real geek cred in those days.
Now, there's still room for abuse (train the system to recognize likely politically unpopular groups and send police to intimidate, for example), but that doesn't automatically mean that there can't be ways of making this system useful without making it intrusive. In Chicago? With the Chicago police? Welcome to Earth, Stranger.
>Hell..many people buy the Harley JUST for the "potato...potato...potato.." engine note and rumble. Didn't they even try to patent that?
Not patent, but trademark. I understand that Harley withdrew their application to trademark their distinctive sound. BTW, that sound comes from the unique firing pattern H-D uses on their 4-cycle V-twin engines. From an engineering point of view, it's not the best choice, since it results in more vibration and unevenness in power output.
I see one of these electric bikes occasionally during my morning commute. I'd probably notice the lack of sound more, if I didn't have my stereo cranked up so I can hear it over the wind noise and exhaust note in my convertible. I can barely hear the Harleys.

"Mon" is French. So unless you are trying to pass for some running-dog Vichy collaborationist, it would be mein fuhrer. :-)

>Trouble is...where would I find the 8-track tape to play in it??
Here you go:http://www.8trackheaven.com/
It's the vintage 4-track that you might have trouble with. Had one in my 54 Chevy sedan. (Now there was a back seat to be proud of.)

So that's a definite "Maybe".
My bad. On the good side, I learned something new before lunch.

That sounds like it ought to be illegal under local anti-pimping ordinances or some such.

I actually didn't expect quite so cynical a rip-off of early adopters. Are you saying you did?

It's pirates you mean then is it Matey? We's not needin' no stinking Letters of Marque, we's the Free Company. ARRRR!!
Of course according to FSM Church doctrine, this would take care of global warming.

I'm sure I speak for many here when I say, "EEEeeeeeewwwwwwww!!"
It deleted all memory of itself from my brain. Fortunately, I installed DR DOS shortly thereafter.
