  1. stick to the basics on Computer Curriculum for Inner City Kids? · · Score: 3

I think you definately want to stick to the basics, especially if they are younger kids. First start out with hardware..."this is the monitor, the keboard, mouse, CD-ROM" and teach them how to use each one. Then teach them about proper bootup and shutdown. Then move into stuff about Windows in general, this is the taskbar, start button, etc. Then teach them to do some general tasks like launching programs, deleting files, etc. Do all of this before you even start getting into games or programming like logo. A fundamentally educated group is much better than a group that knows how to do one task (launch a game and play it). The trick to all of this is keeping the kids interested and involved. So making it fun is the challenge.

However, pressing criminal charges and having you banned from campus seems a little harsh. They could at least have slapped your wrist first and talked to you about it. Obviously, it seems to me like the university was hiding something that your site was bringing out. Do they want you gone because you know something that they don't want you to? I'm sorry, but expulsion and criminal charges just seem a little harsh to me.

What would be cool is if someone wrote a web browser plugin that could "surf" IRC for just music. This brings some ethical issues to mind? What if the rights to a certain program were sold to another company. Then that company wished to advertise a product that was controversial in some way. The actors/writers/producers that originally worked on that program would have no say in whether they want that product advertised in their work. This would be particularly bad for the actors that are advertising a product which they do NOT really want to endorse. It could give them a bad reputation even though they haven't done anything wrong.

  11. speech = expression on Report From The 2600 Appeal Hearing · · Score: 2

    1. Why and how is a computer program expressive speech? What does it express? 2600's lawyers are entirely familiar with Touretzky's Gallery, so forget about those. Assume you have some C or perl staring at you, any random block of code in any random print-out. What does it express? Why should that code be protected expression?

Ok, let me take a stab at this one.

Really, I don't think the code itself is necessarily a form of expression. The expression is in the meaning of the code itself. I model communications system using a computer "language" called HSPICE that some of you EE's out there may be familiar with. Well, using HSPICE, there are many ways to go about arriving at the same goal. The outcome is always the same, either correct or incorrect. However, how I get from point A to point B is my decision and may be completely different from one of my coworker's solutions even though the outcome is the same. This is what makes each program unique and therefore an extension and expression of myself. So whether the language being used is HSPICE, FORTRAN or C, it really doesn't matter. The same concept will apply.

The code should be protected because the protection is in the methods involved to reach the solution that are implicit in the code, not the actual code itself. Any individual can write code to solve a problem. It's the actual content that makes the program efficient, user friendly, etc. Programmer A and Programmer B may both be able to solve the same problem, but Programmer A might have a faster, easier to use interface, better program in general even though the goal is the same. It is the intellectual property contained within the code that should be protected.

  14. managing e-mail is easy on Buried in email? · · Score: 2

I found that the easiest way to manage e-mail is to have 3 accounts:

    1. Work account-this is obvious, only give the address to people that will be contacting you for work purposes, maybe family members for emergencies.
    2. Home account-at your normal ISP, give this one out to all your friends, family, etc...anyone that wants to BS about how the weather sucks or tell you about their life.
    3. Junk account-this is the most important one to me. Get a Yahoo! account or something similar, that way if you get spammed it doesn't matter. Use this address to fill out forms on webpages etc. That way, if there is some e-mail newsletter you are interested in, you can have it sent to that address without interferring with work life or home life.

This may seem obvious to a lot of slashdotters, but if you are careful who you give your addresses to, there shouldn't be a spam problem. This really works, try it. Keeping track of 3 passwords...that's your problem :-P

Really, no one should be apologizing to anyone here! China should give our plane back, and the crew and be done with it. They should have done this from day one and this story never would have made it to press.

I heard a DJ make an interesting comment this morning. He said something about how the Chinese were just stalling so they could check out our spy plane, and when they are done they won't care about apologizing, they'll just give the plane back. He then went on to say that he was more worried about the crew than the plane. Well, to tell the truth, I'm more worried about that plane than the crew. I think our crew will be returned unharmed. If they aren't then China will have a lot of trouble and not just from the US. The plane on the other hand, is fair game. It poses a national security threat. This is a very obvious statement. Sure, I was picked on because I was a geek, and for other reasons too. Face it, kids will be kids. If your young, and different, you deserve to be picked on, your asking for it! I'm not saying that its right, but that's just the way things are! There have always been bullies and there have always been the bullied. It's the reality behind this that is so scary.

So we should be asking ourselves; what has changed? Well, I'm not going to rant about how video games, the net, and TV are all causing this because that is absolutely NOT true! Show me the proof, and I'll believe you! So where are the parents in all this? Are they talking to their kids? Supporting them? Helping them through it?

Also, how do these kids get guns in the first place? It is strange how we have laws to protect our right to own a gun, but shooting someone is illegal. I see a big contradiction there! So what is the purpose of owning a gun in the first place, for anybody? Self protection? If there were no guns in the first place, we wouldn't have to own a gun to protect ourselves from other guns.

I think there are a lot of things we need to look at as a society before we go and blame the net, or video games or TV because that is the easy way out. Censor, censor, censor and your problems magically disappear. NOPE! We need to start teaching morals in school again. What I'm saying is we need to do something!
