Well, in the UK HDTVs have only been turning up in the last couple of years, and the "HD Ready" logo scheme require a HDMI port (or a compatible DVI with encryption port), so here just about any HDTV over here.

I'd assume the Revolution won't ship with the best cable possible as well, so you should budget for something if you want the best quality. I'd guess this is especially if you have some sort of HDTV or something and want to use progressive scan.

The digital port is for component video AFAIK. AFAIK pics of the Revolution only show this port, so it will presumably be used for everything on that, I guess the old SNES port is being chucked out.

Its also of note that sony is using a standard pc power cable this time around too.

As far as I know, most / all consoles with internal PSUs use a standard power connector though (usually the smaller type rather than the big "kettle cord" ones PCs use), and even some external ones have them as well (the slim PlayStation 2 for example).

I don't think Doctor Who was burnt (not that often anyway), the videotapes would've been wiped with a powerful magnet then reused, and the film recordings / kinescopes made for export were unspooled and dumped in landfill. Doctor Who is far better represented than a lot of 1960s British TV though (some ITV companies were also quite wipe-happy as well).

  10. Re:Sci-Fi Does Dumb Again on 'Stargate: SG-1' Cancelled · · Score: 1

He's wrong, the UK is just ahead of the North American releases (apart from The Key to Time set, that's only out in NA). The UK release rate has just been increased from 6 to 10 releases a year though, so it should take less than a decade to finish the set now.

The releases do have better extras than most TV series of course (even the new "vanilla" releases that make up the 4 extra releases still have full commentaries and the production text subtitles), but the release rate can be annoying.

(For those who don't know / care, the Doctor Who releases are of induvidual serials (usually 4-6 episodes), rather than entire seasons, with a few boxsets of linked stories. They're also released in a pattern designed to give a mix of Doctors, rather than sequentially. I guess it was chosen partly becuase Doctor Who releases started before box sets became really common, and also that it was a pattern that worked with the VHS releases.)

No, Codemasters has always been a British company, and I think you're thinking of them (or at least their North American distributer) winning a lawsuit in Canada before they won the US one over the NES Game Genie. I seem to remember that Codemasters stuff was distributed in America by the makers of Micro Machines, and therefore Codemasters got the licence to make the Micro Machines games, which was also their first Mega Drive game, which led to the suit described by the grandparent.

My PAL 'cube has a digital AV connector (bought just before Christmas 2004), but I don't think Nintendo ever released a cable in Europe for it. It does support RGB SCART through the old style analogue connector, which is component as well, just different components.

  13. Re:PAL version of GameCube was composite only on Nintendo Learns from Mistakes with GameCube · · Score: 2, Informative

No it isn't, you could get RGB SCART as well[1], and there's also an RF adaptor if you have a really old or crap TV. For some reason Nintendo really liked messing around, so NTSC Gamecubes don't support RGB, and PAL ones don't support S-Video.

Anyway, who has a PAL TV that doesn't support RGB SCART but does have S-Video? I my experince RGB SCART is far more common than S-Video, and it's better quality anyhow.

[1] I bought mine for about £3 in a HMV clearance shortly before most HMVs stopped selling the 'cube.

Someone needs to bolt one of these AJAX Web 2.0 Beta platform browser-hosted swishy word processors to the editing stage. :-)

I think there's a fair number of people who use mods for semi-legitimate uses (stuff like emulators, media players etc.)[1], or legitimate stuff like Linux. Microsoft doesn't particularly want people doing these things on the Xbox, so they refuse them entry to their super fun happy club.

Of course the people who used mods to cheat at Halo are probably great for MS PR, as Halo players can equate "mod" with "stinking cheater". It's partly Bungie's fault anyway, data on the Xbox HD was insecure for ages before Halo 2, so did they do any kinda of data verification? Of course not...

[1] I say semi, as emulators are a legal grey area, as AFAIK most Xbox homebrew uses pirate copies of the MS SDK.
