Well, once Napster is forced into 'compliance' by the RIAA and the courts, it will be a simple matter for the RIAA to shutdown all the OpenNap and other Napter clones, who have no money to hire lawyers, and would have a tough time winning the case anyway, considering the precendent set by the Napster case itself.
So basically, they'll ALL go away. Or at least go underground, like warez sites.
A low-power CPU doesn't give you much more battery life at all, in a full-featured notebook. That's really all that needs to be said to put the final nail in Transmeta's coffin.
What I would like to see is a company like IBM design a notebook completely from scratch, using nothing but custom-designed components designed to use as little juice as possible. I mean seriously, shouldn't we be able to get at least 5 or 6 hours of HARD use out of a notebook before it needs to be recharged? 3 hours, which seems to be what most notebooks manage these days, just isn't enough.
My prediction:
Piece Of Shit. I mean, seriously, fantasy movies almost NEVER work, and on top of that, they seem to be trying for 'hipness'.
D&D sucks anyway.
Simply making the CPU more power-efficient WILL NOT increase the total battery-life very much at all for a notebook computer. There are other things using up that battery too, you know. Mostly the backlight for the LCD.
Transmeta is full of marketing-type shit with their battery-life claims.
Transmeta can reduce the power their chips use all they want, but honestly, it doesn't make much of a difference in battery life. It's the DISPLAY (backlit displays, at least) that eats battery power, not the CPU.
Sure, in a non-backlit display, you may get significant battery life gains by using a Transmeta processor, but, non-backlit displays suck, and any device that uses one probably isn't doing any kind of processor intensive stuff anyway.
Are you guys NUTS? Do you really think that you have even a snowball's chance in Hell of selling even a *few* of these things in a market which Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Sega are determined to dominate?
Indrema is Doomed with a capital 'D'. A Linux-based console isn't a bad idea, but without MAJOR funding, a new console can never, ever take off. It's all about marketing.
'Bits' don't matter. In fact, people who talk about 'how many bits' a console has are idiots. ALL that matters is the quality/speed of the graphics it can generate.
Remember, ALL x86 processors currently available are 32-bit processors. But obviously, a PC can do better graphics than a Playstation. And arguably can do better graphics than a Playstation 2, which is, as you say '128-bit'.
The point is, the N-Cube will probably be at least as powerful as the Playstation2.
I like some Anime stuff, but my major problem with it is the awful penchant for cheap physical humor the Japansese seem to have. You've got this really cool, dark "cyberpunk" world in a lot of Anime films, but it's almost always ruined by some Gleek The Space Monkey-type character.
We won't even mention how bad the voice acting is in dubbed stuff, and how distracting THAT is.
Anyway, the most interesting show for 'geeks' has got to be Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Can't believe no one has mentioned it yet.
No one works for free all the time. C'mon. Would you really want to be a full-time Rock Star if you weren't getting paid pretty damn well? Would you want to have to work another job to pay your bills? No. I like Napster, I despise the RIAA, but let's quit this 'Music should be free for all!' bullshit.
EXACTLY. Making an ultra low-power processor isn NOT going to increase battery life very much on notebook computers. Those active matrix, backlit displays are what's eating up your battery. The Crusoe may have application in devices that don't require backlit displays, but...if it doesn't need a good display, what is it doing that it needs a processor as fast as a Crusoe? Crusoe is screwed.
Of COURSE PCs will have more powerful hardware than the X-Box does when it finally gets released. But PC games are almost never written to exploit the latest and greatest hardware, simply because not enough people own the latest and greatest. The point is, the X-Box, being a fixed target for developers, let's them truly push the hardware to the limits because they don't have to worry about multiple hardware configurations, or writing their game to 'gracefully degrade' when run on weaker hardware. X-Box games will probably look/run MUCH better than PC games for the next few years for these reasons.
You've made all these judgments about ClearType, but none of you have looked at it on a PocketPC display! I mean, the webpage with the samples flat-out TELLS you that a CRT can't display it correctly, and you won't be able to appreciate it. Does ANYONE out there in have a PocketPC so they can tell us if it really works?
EVERY record company should have their entire catalog of music available for download. Charge me a monthly fee of say, 10$. For that 10$, I get to download 74 minutes worth of songs in MP3 format. If I go over the 74 minutes, I pay $1 per song I download. Music videos should be streamed for 'free', and if I want to download them in hi-res, they can charge me a buck or so. I would actually prefer this over Napster. Imagine if you could find/download literally ANY song. No hunting around for it. Its just THERE, guaranteed. That would be worth 10$/month to most music fans. It won't stop piracy, but nothing ever will. The best method is to make it WAY more convenient to actually pay for something than to steal it.

Did anyone play Super Mario Bros. so much, that you could play through the first couple of levels with the TV *OFF*?
I remember doing that when I was 14. Man, those were the days. I can barely stand to play any game for more than an hour at a time anymore.
Contra wasn't that hard. I remember being able to beat Contra without dying ONCE, back in the day.
:)
You just have to memorize the whole fucking thing
One more time, for the idiots:

Scott McNealy is pissed.
"But...but...what about Java? And...and we put the 'dot' in 'dot com'! I demand a recount!"
McNealy is such a whiny little pussy.
Sun makes overpriced, feature-less products, and Scott McNealy is a whiny twerp.

Finally, corporate assholes can e-mail PowerPoint presentations about nothing-in-particular while they fly from Holiday Inn to Holiday Inn!
So, they basically took a STAND ALONE mp3 player, and added a connector to it so you could plug it into your Visor.
Gee. Wow.
What's next, and mp3 player add-on for my toaster that fits into the 'single-slice' slot?
Give me a fucking break.
For the love of God, get rid of Katz. He's awful. He's an embarassment to Slashdot, and that's saying a lot.
You nutty creationists. If ignorance is bliss, you people must be walking around witha smile on your face ALL DAY.

Exactly.
:)
It's 'pursue', by the way.
That thought wristwatches with a built-in calculator were a really cool idea.
Geeks buy them, thinking it makes them look important. Get a life guys.
