The rotation period of the moon is exactly the same as its orbital period around the earth. This causes the same side of the moon (with the exception of a bit of wobble) to always face the earth. But this side goes through day-night cycles. This is easily seen; it's what causes the phases of the moon.

Wrong wrong wrong! Look here and you'll see the explanation for the phases of the moon.

The moon does not have a "light side" and a "dark side".

Quoting directly from the basic science textbook I used when I was 14.

"The moon has one side which is always illuminated by the sun, and a side which always faces into space. These are known as the Light side of the moon and the Dark side of the moon. Due to complex gravitational effects between the Earth and Moon, the Moon has stopped rotating Eons ago and one side always faces the sun.

As the Moon orbits the earth every month long lunar cycle we see alternating sides of the Moon. When the Light side of the moon faces us we see a Full Moon, and when the Dark side faces us we see a New Moon."

So when the flag is planted on the light side of the moon it's not going anywhere dude, not without allot of effort.

  12. Re:There is an american flag on the moon. on Apollo 11 Photographs Unfrozen · · Score: -1

A common misconception. In fact, it will be 2 weeks before they flag needs to be lowered. If you take a look at the moon, you will notice that it goes dark on the side facing us every month.

I think you missed out an important lesson in junior high. Basic stuff. Its because thats the dark side is coming around to face us. The flag will still be on the light side

Remember the moon does not rotate, but it does go around the earth hence we see its dark side sometimes and sometimes its light side
