Once thing I'm certain of. It needs thought and preparedness to know when we are heading into dangerous territory. We could be making problems at this junction of new science as always and the best cure is prevention so they say. That means trying to look ahead and being aware of what problems might be! When she complained it was unusable, I didn't believe her - I've found it very intuitive under Linux. But after trying it on XP, it really does feel like a crippled version of the package I know and love - it's clunky, ugly and restrictive.
She just has to get used to a different interface way of doing things. Many people already have experience useing other things, but they aren't GIMP and if you want the power it wields then of course you need to do more than pick a colour from a button and then draw in simple dots and lines.
Make her sit down with the program for a month and not use anything else, and in that time you can be sure she will eventually find it the easiest thing she is using.
Take it from me it just takes time to get to know how it works and once you use it like that it is intuitive and very powerful

Think about it logically. We have a few hundred tons of nuclear waste. This was all radioactive before we got it and will be after we got it. So what has it been doing all this time? Being radioactive. If its puts back into the ground like it was found (from everywhere?) then I dont see a problem. Low level radioactivity is always been there and always will be. If this waste were ground into incredibly fine particulates and released into the atmosphere slowly from a hundred places on the globe it would not be noticed. within years it would all be in the ground again and there are no problems. Nuclear waste problem solved by putting it back where it came from, how it came from.
So when does it stop being 'opinion' that big companies don't give a shit about anyone else's "IP rights".

That's my thoughts too. Looking at something like evolved electronic circuits that act in ways that arent understood easily, but use every single possible property of whatever components are used in the layout of these electronics, so is the same with nature. it just says there is more that we need to know about how these interactions work. We can model only so much when its all based on incomplete knowledge.

Making backups each night is a waist of energy and time that could be prevented by staying with one reliable disk instead of an unreliable raid array with 2 or 4 the unreliableness goes up exponentially.
So stick with one disk and backups when you think you need them instead of rediculous schemes that require too much energy and time to run
