  1. Why is this a surprise? on Single-play DVDs a Hoax · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Story posted on /. is hoax!"

Why is this a surprse to anyone? All of the major news media got most of the facts wrong on the Superdome incident after the Katrina hurricane. And that was a story that really mattered!

And anyone that takes what is published on /. as real news better learn to get used to being taken advantage of. News stories are an indication that something may have taken place. But don't count on the actual details being anything close to correct. How many times do you need to let Times reporters and national news casters lie to you before you realize this? And now you can add /. to the list of information sources that must be suspect.

Ask anyone that has direct first hand information on a news story that has been reported on just how many facts on their incident were reported correctly. I doubt that any story is ever reported 100% correctly.

And what is the deal with newscasters becoming part of the story instead of just reporting what is going on? News on TV has become nothing more than another entertainment show. "If it bleeds it leads!" The talking heads are full of themselves making important sounding noises, rolling their eyes, and making incredulous sounds on stories they obviously have strong opinions on. Add that to them only reporting the portions of a story they agree with or make people they don't like look bad, why do so many people believe them still? And they get to do this with no over sight. So Dan Rather retired a little early over that misunderstanding. The other talking heads have picked up the slack.

And while we are at it what the hell is the deal with Major League Baseball? Why they hell can't they set a no tolerance policy for steroid/drug use? One time and that player is banned. Why do they try these half measures giving they multiple times to try to get around the rules? [sorry, that last part just slipped out...]

What I want to understand is what do they mean by integrating the database into the operating system? Like you suggest, are they going to build a relational database of a systems file systems and the files in it?

I hope they are not going to use a database to store system configuration data. We all know how well that worked out for the Windows registry. If they do go this route it could spell the end for Solaris. Which is a real shame as Solaris 10 has a lot of good things to offer.

Why do they keep trying to over complicate things? Keep it simple and easy to fix, don't hide things in a database that work perfectly well in a text configuration file dedicated to a particular service/application.

Another reason for the informatin dark age that we are approaching is the insane patent and copyright laws that are being passed. Fairly soon most ideas and concepts will be controlled by a few mega corporations. At that point innovation will become extinct. Anyone trying to produce something new that infringes on one of these patents or copyrights gets sued out of existence. As a result no new technologies get released except for those the mega corporations want released. And since the mega corporations are held to a three month cycle by the stock holders they only push out the same old thing that people buy everyday. No sense in taking a chance on spending R&D money to try and develop something new that might not sell and impact the bottom line for the quarter. Thus resulting in a dark age where no real progress is made, just stagnation. As a result no one is able to adapt as the earth warms up then cools down into a new ice age. This causes massive evacuations of coastal cities as they become unlivable due to increasing frequency of storms and rising water.

Oh, wait, I just watched this on the nightly news.......OH SHIT!

You can spend a couple of grand on a DVR box you build yourself but it does not have to cost that much.

I just put together a second mythtv box that totals out at around $800. And that could be shaved down if you spent more time looking for the parts. Used an ECS 760GX-M Socket 754 SiS 760 GX Micro ATX AMD motherboard with an AMD Sempron 3100+ CPU, 2GB ram (could go with 512K), a Maxtor 300GB harddrive, Plextor PX-740A/SW-BL DVD drive/burner. A $60 case that included a power supply and the caputre cards is the only other thing you need. I used a PVR-350 card and had planned to use a PVR-500. However I will be replacing the PVR-500 with a PVR-250 card.

FC4 loaded on this motherboard with no problems, video, sound, NIC all detected out of the box. Use ATRPMS to install mythtv-suite and you have a system ready to go once you complete the configuration. Just follow the documentation.
Next project is to build diskless frontend systems for the other TVs in the house.

Buy an inverter. You can use the car battery or have a spare marine battery on hand for use with it. The next level though is to get an actual generator and install a transfer switch in the house. I did that a couple of years ago and used it last year when three hurricanes hit Orlando.

In your case a battery and an inverter would be the short term solution for the reef tank. Then you crank up the generator after the storm has passed and you use that for power and to recharge the batteries.

The good thing about using a generator and transfer switch is that you don't have to drag extension cords through the house to power the refrigerator and freezer. Plus you get lights available in most rooms. Unless you get a whole house generator you won't have A/C unless you get one of those window units which can be run from a small generator.

And don't forget to have a set of rabbit ears for the TV. Most likely cable will be out and without an antenna you won't get any over the air stations. And listening to the TV audio on the radio does not do much good when they say things like "this area I'm pointing to on the map will be underwater in 15 minutes so evacuate as soon as possible....". I found the regular radio stations either went off the air or did not provide good information.

And after a couple of days without power we had the neighbors over for ice cream and watched a DVD on the TV. And we did run extension cords to the neighbors house to keep thier fridge and freezer going.

But don't mess with trying to jurry rig a UPS to act as an inverter. Just go out and buy one they are not that expensive. I have one now that you can plug into the power port on the truck and use that to charge cell phones, cam corders, laptops, etc.
