All a pro would need to do is either make an ISO or decrypt the files and off he goes. These things can print about 14,000 DVDs a month for a 4 DVD edition. If it doesn't work, (and you legitimately purchased it) could you not return it as defective? (Probably not likely in America) Here in the Philippines they seem happy to 'exchange' it for anything else they have in stock.

In the USA, Companies generally give you 30 days to exchange a DVD that is defective. You may exchange it for the same title. IE, you have Harry Potter 3 and the disk is defective, you can exchange it for another copy of Harry Potter 3. I have had to do this with disks (more than once, I have bought many DVDs) before due to errors in the manufacturing process.

So yes, we can exchange defective DVDs here in the USA.

A bit by bit copy would be idistinguishable from the original. This is how a disc copy works. And this is what the Proffesional Pirates use. Many commercial CD/DVD burners offer this, but first detect to see if the original is CSS protected (and if so, refuses to copy it). Also, making a bit for bit copy requires you to have the new disk the same size as the old. Dual layer disks are still expensive as compared to single layer, but they are coming down in price.

The people who release these on the internet however, generally release them in a compressed form that requires decrypting the original and re-encoding it to some other format. (usually DivX).

I haven't read much into this, but if the summary is right and Apple is trying to protect a trade secret, I was under the impression that it is the companies responsibility to protect this secret and that once it becomes open, there is nothing they can really do to stop it from spreading. For instance, you can't really copyright the ingredients to a cookie, so you keep the recepie secret. If this secret is leaked, or someone figures it out, there is nothing they can really do because it is not copyrighted or under protection.

No, but you can fire (among other things) the person the leaked the secret in the first place. This is what Apple is trying to do. The only thing is that the only way to find out who is doing the leaking is to go to those they know who know is doing the leaking. The journalists know who is leaking the information. No one else knows who is leaking the information except the person doing the leaking. The only way for Apple to find out is to get the journalists to tell them. That is why they are going after the journalists.

If you can't trust someone on the little secrets, how can you trust them on the big secrets? How do you find out who is trustworthy if you can't even find out who is breaking your trust?

Apple is going to these journalists (who are encouraging people to break the NDS) because it is about the only way to find out who is leaking the information and breaking the NDA. A private investigation won't reveal anything simply due to the number of ways people could send in the information. The only way is to get the journalists to reveal it. Although, there is getting to be a mighty thin line between what some of these journalists are doing and "industrial espionage".

Interesting that one of the solutions proposed for SS is to raise taxes. Even more reason to eliminate it. (Or get out of it).

Higher classes get most of their incomes from different areas, like capital gains, which do not pay their due burden for our government. As for the poor and middle class being more burdened, fewer people are paying any income tax now. http://www.taxfoundation.org/ff/zerotaxfilers.html A flat rate, with no deductions, on all whould tax everyone equally. It would also prevent a need for moving around the brackets as wages move up.

Solution: Eliminate corporate income tax (otherwise it is a double tax on the divedends) and count divedends under income. Flat tax on all income including that which is currently defined as captitol gains.

Remember that SS was put into place because most Americans weren't putting any (or enough) money away for retirement.

So some should be penalized for the idiocy of others? It wasn't meant to be the wealth redistribution scheme it has become. Also SS was not originally supposed to be under federal control. Also, there are several states that have their own pension plans in place of SS that give much better returns (http://dcexaminer.com/articles/2005/02/08/opinion /editorial/01aaedit.txt. that 3% figure that they give in the article you have should be more like 2% from what I have read. Please clarify this. I see SS as extortion in that I am required by law to provide money to a pension plan that I want no part ot. As for the taxes, I also see that the progressive tax system we have is extortion but only for those who make more. Why not just ahve a flat tax of something like 25% (for starters) and adjust it from there? That way everyone is paying the same amount proportional to their income. I'm about ready to keep a running list of links on breeder reactors since it keeps coming up so much. Wired has a story I'll link to below on them (and nuclear in general). Breeder reactors tend to cost a bit more to operate than traditional reactors, but the allow you to create and recycle the old fuel. Thus eliminating the need for storage sites. France (among others) has 77% of their electricity generated through nuclear power. Recycling the control rods dramatically reduces waste and the resulting waste is much less radioactive.

Another link to google for is "nuclear waste recycle" (leave out the quotes) There are some links on a different form of recycling as well that I am not talking about. A better search might be "nuclear waste reprocessing" (again, don't use the quotes when searching google).
