There's a lot more increase in entropy involved in a phase change than decrease involved in cooling down a rock. We would not be adding or removing any energy from the Earth as a result of this action. We would be shifting energy between two different forms, with the final result being a rise in entropy for the universe at the very end of the process(Mechanical friction, electrical resistance, etc.).
Actually the telomeres at the end of our DNA fibers limit our lifespans to about 125 years. This is because, as cells split they each take some of the telomerase with them. When enough divisions have happened the cell no longer has enough telomerase to divide. Note that I've only read about this in a study of human development, since I'm not a biologist.
He's just jealous because he's a 900k and therefore got in after it was cool to be on Slashdot. Also, he's not really a nerd of any sort. He's just pretending to be one so all his friends online will think slightly better of him.
Actually, your point against it is the entire philosophy of criminal justice, that it's better to let a guilty man go free than to let an innocent man be wrongfully convicted. That's why we have things like "Reasonable Doubt," the neccessity of a warrant for searches, et. al.. It's all to protect the innocent from miscarriages of justice. You deserve everything you get when you lose sight of this.
Also, it looks like you didn't read the article. Other people have bitched about that though.
I dunno if you caught that the purpose of humor is always to poke fun at life's idiosyncrasies.
I think it's more that people often don't realize that when other people laugh at them, it's because they're doing something that seems odd to the vast majority of people and that humor is our way of pointing that out without criticizing.
And don't forget that for every engineering project there are hundreds if not thousands of physical, chemical, biological, psychological, sociological, and mathematical principles that are followed to see it to its completion. Try to analyze why we keep our toilets in separate rooms if you're having trouble understanding what I mean, or even why different cultures have different designs for these rooms and their fixtures.
Also take note that all these people "pursuing a satisfying life" have created works that tempt us to dream and explore, developing principles and ideas which are then engineered. It's highly symbiotic.
Just imagine science and the humanities getting it on while engineering watches for new ideas.
If you're smart you still recieve things like bills and bank statements via regular mail so that people can't steal them off your hard drive. Or worse, so they don't get lost when your email system goes down. You also need something by which to recieve physical objects like clothing, books, etc. which have been ordered online. At least, you will until the 3D printer takes off.
A few years ago my dad had to fly down to South Carolina from Washington State every few months. He'd always pick up a respiratory infection on the plane no matter who he sat next to. They're far from as clean as you say they are.
And as for crampedness, he's stick-thin and even he complains about how small the seats are in cattle class.
You will not die if you can't afford to pay for a car. You will not die if you can't afford to pay your travel costs. You will die if you can't afford to eat. You may die if you get sick and don't have health insurance. THerefore it's approaching the same class as food. Lack of health insurance also creates an underclass. If you can't afford to drive you move to somplace where public transit is available. If you can't afford to pay for your daughter's big operation tomorrow, what do you do but go bankrupt?
Riddle me this, how is a lifestyle responsible for someone getting leukemia? It sounds to me like you think they have a choice in the matter. Does someone have a choice in the expression of a genetic disorder?
Also, if you pay taxes you would be paying for the effects of your lifestyle, and everyone else's. But everyone else would be paying for the effects of your own. It's this socialist idea of sharing the cost amongst everyone.
I dunno, but trusting one guy who you can incarcerate for election fraud is much easier than doing jack shit about our problem and trusting a corporation known to have a bias toward one political party. Are you suggesting that because Open Sourcing doesn't remove humans entirely from the loop it's not worth requiring? Because that's what it sounds like to me.

No. We are at war with Eastasia. We have always been at war with Eastasia. Thanks be to The Party for increasing our chocolate ration from 25 grams to 20 grams!

At the least, we are cooler than the 7-digit ones. The 5-digit guys are way cooler than us though. They got in before it was cool to be on Slashdot.
Bastard Judge from Hell! With his sidekick, the Pimply Faced Paralegal!

That's reasonable.

You're right that culture relies on engineering.

Like clockwork, there's always someone that asks this question. Every CPU article, every time.

Or you could just fly down and stay in a 4-star hotel for a couple of days. It would cost about the same, and you could even fly back!
Right, but then they don't get to charge extra just because you bought an Athlon 64 and actually want to use it.
Yeah, but that John Romero chick is really hot.

For hunters you need two drinky birds. One to hit autoshot, and one to hit aimed shot.
Point.

By ripping the BIOS, like they do with game consoles for emulators, then comparing what you get with what you're given.
You compile the source code and validate it against the binary that shipped with the machine.

Just the other day mine asked me what to do with a BA in English. I had no answer for it.
Nitpick with your nitpick: As long as we're distinguishing between genres, if it involves ghosts it's still SciFi, just not SF.
