I work as an outsourcer. Only thing why my company employs 20 people with university degree is bad management at our clients. They don't want to design things, they don't want even to define meaningful specs. That way, we have to have highly trained people, just in order to make everything extremely fast, since our people have to do everything by trial and mistake, hoping that it would be something that will please the client. With good management, we could have 1/4 of people with university education, other people could be less trained people guided by educated ones.
But that would require: someone technically educated in our client company to really do the analysis (i.e. "system analyst") and willingness to pay that person some real money. It is much more simple to hire dozen of engineers in Serbia, to feed them with minimal amount of information and to wait if something will eventually appear as a usable product.
Yes, I agree that God could appear to them as their own "kind of Christ" (since Christ is not actually a son of God, but rather one of three representations of God). That way it is easy to understand how they could be Christians ("Skipians", from your example).
News for me here is that this guy believes that this possible aliens might be free from our original sin, which was the main reason of sending Christ to us. In order to be compatible with previous idea (that aliens are Christians, too) they would have to be monotheists, but they would believe only in Father and Holy Ghost, but not in Christ, as such concept would we unknown to them. Except if they are more advanced then we are, so they could spy on us, and conclude from our behavior that there is third representation of God - Son, i.e. Christ.
(Take everything here with the grain of salt, as I am not well educated in Catholic theology and also I don't know all of correct English theoretical terms.)
The real question is whether they would accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
First time I heard that someone from Vatican mentioned aliens, I think it was the same guy, he mentioned that if they exist, they are Christians. This statement slightly contradict that, as he mentioned here that those aliens might be free from our original sin, hence they would not have notion of the Christ, at least not our Christ.
I really expected to read at least one post starting "Typing at the moment this post on CPC...". There were no real geeks in CPC community, I guess. I mean, is it that hard to implement TCP stack and to port Firefox?
For some odd reason, even they are in USA, they always carry AK47, and I always wondered if it would be much easier to find some US made weapons instead of imported ones.
I agree that financial parameters look great for MS. Stock market is clueless - if they were happy to throw money on companies without any product in dot-com era, there was actually no reason to stop investing in MSFT. But stock market is rarely driven by sound reasoning.
On the bad side for Ballmer there is a question of diversification. Unlike Apple, which was able to create cool new OS, cool new MP3 player and cool new phone, MS still earns money in their OS department and in their Office department. Everything else is quite average in its success and not a quite cash cow as one may expect watching at composite numbers.
Still, this is was not a reason for stock market to drop MSFT. Google, more recent must-buy on stock markets actually has much worse product diversification. No matter of dozens of cool project they have started, their only real revenue is from advertising.
About the fastest responding technology is hydro power. Penstocks can be opened and turbines spun up in less than 5 minutes.
And once running, 200MW turbine can change its production for 5MW (2.5%) in just 4 seconds! Probably even faster, but that was a limit that we had to obey when we were controlling power system frequency in Serbia.

Since this is a Nazi tank, which means 1940:s, the half-scale Manhattan project should start right about now. This time it would be easier to make an atomic bomb - we will need just one half of the critical mass.
Following that logic, that 64-bit machines are necessary in order to get more than 2^32 bytes of memory, one may assume that 8-bit machines were able to address only 256 bytes of memory. IIRC, my C64 had 64k without 16-bit CPU.
In Serbia, there's still a compulsory military service. Before you become 27, you have to spent 6 months in the army. When it was my age to finally get rid of that it was 9 months. One simple way to make that reasonably comfortable was to enlist to Officers in reserve training instead of regular army.
Prerequisite is to have a university degree. As a result, our "class" had 100 pissed well-educated young man, forming 4 platoons. My platoon consisted of electrical engineers, one platoon consisted of mechanical engineers. We were trained for duties in "technical service of army" (dunno correct English term for that). Last two platoons were trained for logistics (food, laundry etc) and they consisted of people from many fields, mostly with degree in economy.
It is important to say also that in Serbia, electrical engineering is considered much more prestigious than mechanical engineering, and generally (when I was the freshman) best students enrolled to electrical engineering.
And as you may predict, our platoon was always with the best discipline, with the best scores and with the best attitude toward (usually meaningless) tasks. Those two platoons of "mixed origin" were complete mass, and only thing that helped them from being constantly punished were their superior who had to take a lot of effort to cover their screw-ups.
(Funny thing with this system is that our reserve officers are actually most educated ppl in the army system, much better educated than regular officers, as they were trained in extremely crappy military academy.)
My old laptop had quite typical HD, but still quite noisy if you work at night while all background house noises are gone. So if I wanted to listen mp3, instead to listen if from the HD, I would attach my mp3 player to an USB slot, and then plugged headphones to the laptop. I could use the mp3 player directly, but this way I did not have to worry about batteries. (And Winamp is a better mechanism to control your playlists than player's internal software.)
I own Samsung Z400 phone, but I don't have a plan that covers 3G. But the network is there. I had to manually turn off 3G, in order to get 3 days battery life instead of 2 day life.
My wife also owns the phone and one of our friends, and all of us benefited from turning 3G capabilities off.
Being a resident of Serbia, where this sad vehicle is produced, just couple of notes regarding Yugo: * it is still in production * it costs about 3500EUR brand new * it has about 1000ccm engine * you can drive it up to 120kmh without problems (event the noise is not too problematic) * it consumes about 6l/100km (realistic figure) * it is designed poorly, but the crappy manufacturing is the main problem, not the design * it is extremely cheap to maintain
The car is underpowered and not safe enough for Europe and North America. The hype claims that this car will shake up the WORLDWIDE car market. That's hard to believe when it's not legal to sell it here.
Well, worldwide means much more than Europe and North America. China alone has 2x more people that North America and Europe combined.
First of all, I have 5 yrs university degree in electrical engineering. I have spent couple of years working on frequency regulation of power systems.
Your intuitive understanding is wrong.
No it's not. I don't speak about AC circuits, I speak about power/energy balance. I just want to know how you can explain energy balance if we have two power plants that produce more power than user consumes. I don't understand how phase shifting will in long run prevent frequency and voltage to increase (which will lead to increased consumption which will bring system in balance).
I guess that you had in mind the situation where we have two sine sources where one lags behind the first one. Although they both have same voltage looking from the outside, difference between them still exist due to phase shift. So it seems that you can transfer energy from one source (one power plant) to another phase shifted source (other power plant). But that does not help in our case for a simple reason - you need something that can accept energy and we have plants that can work only as generators. This is not due to electrical machines inside the plant, this is due to turbines that cannot reverse their process.
If you overproduce Base load you have rising voltages in the system and potentially cause problems.
First effect of too large production in a system would not be a rise in voltage, but rise in frequency - both effects will happen, but frequency rise will be more significant. Voltage change is usually an effect of inadequate reactive power generation.
Though, this is rarely a problem - if there was too much capacity at any time, they could offset the phase of a generator or two, causing one system to effectively cancel out the other, reducing system voltage.
This is very strange concept for me. I don't see how power plants can cancel the power they pump into the system. Could you give me some links that explain this?
Also, I think that you underestimate regulating capabilities of wind farms. In a case they produce too much power, you can simply turn off some of the turbines.
Ok, jedi sense the force via midi-chlorians. But how then, for God's sake, midi-chlorians sense the force? Do they have midi-midi-chlorians?
And that's not even funny. This was so weak explanation of force that it was insulting. Even worse, it was something that wasn't even supposed to be explained! Of course they feel the force, they are f**cking jedis! That's the whole point of being jedi - they are different from us since they feel the force. If I kill the jedi and take his midi-chlorians (they are some kind of blood cells, aren't they?) and put them into my bloodstream would I become a jedi? Or at least jedi-like? Are there, in some obscure bars in the rogue part of the Galaxy, illegal dealers of the midi-chlorians? If there are not, why is it so? I want an explanation! I want to know everything about them, since they are so important. No, jedis are not important per se, I want to know about midi-chlorians, the real heros of the Galaxy!
I want to create a list of unanswered questions about midi-chlorians.
* (already mentioned) How midi-chlorians feel the force? (answer cannot be "via midi-chlorians") * If they are living organisms, blood-cells or something like that, why they can be found in so many different species? * In what organ are they produced? * Why I cannot insert them into my bloodstream to become a jedi? * Why some persons do have midi-chlorians and some other do not have them? * Why there is no species that consist entirely of jedis? If ones with midi-chlorians are so superior, why they did not evolute into separate species or survived better than those without them?
I've heard that BT is willing to do that for free...
