The building that I work in has three floors and the third floor, where I work, has the men's bathroom on the right and women's on the left. Go down one floor and they are reversed. I have had a few interesting encounters especially at the end of a 12+ hour shift. I can understand not having a universal standard for which side is which (although I would support one) but jeez, at least have them the same within the same company and building.
How is this any different then what Google is doing (aside from being the "benevolent and all holy" Goggle versus the "almost as evil as Microsoft" Sun)? The client should never matter when running the application and if you look here http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=433240 e1 you can get the client application for just about anything including dumb terminals and handheld devices.
And stating that Sun is trying to put all applications on Sun systems is a bunch of crap. The design of the product is to have a gateway to all vendors applications. So you continue to run your existing applications and connect to them from the gateway, and no it doesn't have to be Solaris http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=43321d b9
All it takes is some sampling of weather patterns over the past few hundred years (since we have been recording them)
This is one problem that I have about "global warming". We have only been recording, officially, historical temperature records since around 1860. This is about 60 years after the end of a "Little Ice Age". For 500 years prior to the 1800's we were in a "Little Ice Age" with very inaccurate records. We only know that the tempuratures were much cooler then today. This is one reason the Norse stoped comming to Eastern North America. So for 500 years we were in a "Little Ice Age" and now the last 200 years shows that the temperatures of the Earth warming.
The real fact about global warming is that we know the mean tempuratures have increased over the last few decades. However, we don't know what the mean tempurature should be do to lack of historical data (150 years of data after a "Little Ice Age" of 500 years is bunk data). We also have no idea of the impact of natural disasters such as volcanos (like it snowing in Isreal in the mid 1990's) versus human impact. It could very well be that in a little over 100 years we will see the tempurature start droping again.

I agree with you point but I would substitute faith for religion.
I personally have many issues with religion of all types, but I have a strong faith. Religion can be bad even in God's eyes.
Romans 2:17-24 "17Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God; 18if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth-- 21you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24As it is written: 'God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.'"
Substitute Jew for any religion.
On the other hand faith is what I have.
Heb 11 "1Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
I am certain of a few things in life that I can not see nor that science can not either prove or disprove. Just because evolution exists doesn't mean that God does not. If everything in the Bible could be proven to be false, I would still have faith in some creator of the universe. Why, the same reason I have faith that my wife and child love me... Because I know they do. There are some things in life that science can not prove or disprove.
I am not saying that this makes it right, but because of this, the calculated losses on both sides for a land invasion, and the unknown of what the bombs "real" potential was, I understand why it was done.
Over the years America has turned from a manufacturing country to an R and D country. I think this further emphasizes that by making money off IP and not the goods.
To paraphrase BASF "We don't make things, we just make money off those that do."
I totally agree with you and the writting is terribly biased.
IIRC the British were the ones that had to divide up the Ottoman empire and IMHO they did a terrible job. They let the Jews settle too much land and they let the Palestinians and the Jews resort to violence with little protection on either side.
I don't dispute much of what you or the parent post are saying. But my confusion of the Israel/Palestinan conflict is in the overall history of the region. Specifically where to start. For example the Haganah was established due to rising riots from the Arab community starting in April of 1920 when five Jewish people killed and 200 were injured and the British (from the Jewish viewpoint) did little to curb it over the years. As Arab riots grew so did the power of the Haganah.
Going back prior to that, the claim is the Crusades started it. But prior to that most of southern Europe was invaded by Muslims and people were either converted or killed.
Prior to that you could go back to around 600A.D. when Omar ibn al-Khattaab took over the region to stop the spread of Chistianity and to convert the people to Islam.
Prior to that you had Byzantine rule where Christianity spread.
Keep going and you will eventually get to where the Israelites defeted the Canaanites around 1200 B.C. Which I guess is sort of Palestinian, but not really.
I am currious how to increase security but not decrease liberty? In network/computer security some liberties are lost by increasing security. Limiting network traffic, filtering, not allowing users to install software, etc..... How is the rest of the world any different?
There is always a sliding balance between increasing security and decreasing liberty. The right amount of each is the fine balance that I believe not everyone will ever agree upon.
If you can find a way to increase security *and* increase liberties in any area of life; be it computers or transit, you will be a very wealthy individual. But until that day comes comprimises have to be made at some point. I do agree that when a terrorist attack take place the government overreacts, but the alternative is to do nothing and be blamed. Within a couple of hours of the attacks and already people were criticizing the govenment on what they could have done to prevent it.
At this point in time, I don't care who caused this or what could have prevented it. I just want to take this time to send my prayers out to the friends and families of those touched by this incident. I pray that nothing like this ever has to happen to anyone and I pray that God watches over all of us.
P.S. Yes that is God with a capital "G" even if this is slashdot
I completely agree with your variant, but correct me if I am wrong, but once the server opens up the well known port for a client then what is to stop the next person from just connecting since the port is open and now listening. As long as the client is connected what is to stop the next person or a bad guy from exploiting the port.
Wouldn't a better solution be to also have the server send in the encrypted packet a random port to connect to so every user connects to a random port as well. Now the bad guy has a difficult time expoiting the random port since he can't easily find out what the port is running. As well as can't replay the attack.
I too have been trying to understand utility computing but more so wondering if my managers understand what it is.. This article at least gives me some hope for my management, but the title says "Thinking Through Buzzword Overload" and there are still a lot of crappy buzzwords unexplained.

The bottom line, I think when the engineers figure out how to make utility computing work (whith little to no direction), then maybe the managers will have an idea of what it is.

Probably because we were just leaving a "Little Ice Age" (1300-1800AD). http://www.whoi.edu/institutes/occi/currenttopics

Just as a point of clarification, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were military targets and many of the people who lived there were training for a land invasion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hi roshima_and_Nagasaki#Hiroshima_during_World_War_II
