  1. Re:Hallmark cards. on New Baby in the Torvalds Home · · Score: 1

Personally, I would rather have a personally written note without lines of beautiful prose. It comes from the heart that way and not some $1.99 card someone thought was cute. To me, time is the most flattering thing for someone to give. To have someone take a bit of their time to make me feel better is a wonderful feeling.

I mean no disrepect to the writers of Hallmark cards and such, as they're obviously good at what they do. I just feel that if you truly want to get your feelings across, sit down and write it out. I think most people would appreciate that more even if it didn't have any entertaining graphics or creative poems.

I've wondered that myself for quite some time. The only reason I can think of is to trap users in the site, so they'll spend more time, click on more ads, buy more things, etc. Which, of course, would cause a backlash from hell if anything like this was tried in a brick and mortar store. For some reason, people will accept most anything trampling over them if it deals with computers. Reliability, rights, safety. The public needs to be more demanding of their rights an expectations when it comes to technology.

Hm. Why does the MPAA care if players will play region 0 discs? As long as the region encoding works, the studios can region lock their discs, the home producers can non lock theirs, and everyone will be happy. This just seems like the MPAA simply wants to control everything about DVDs.

Fermat's side script amounted to something like "I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this theory, but this space is not large enough to accomidate it." Hardly a positive for the addition of side comments. He sent generations of mathematicians on a wild goose chase for 400 years before someone (Andrew Wiles) finally figured it out. Even then, the mathematics used weren't even thought of at the time of Fermat, so if he did actually have a proof, it still isn't known.

Fermat's little scribble on the margin of his book was far from informative. Useful, being that it inspired a lot of work in mathematics to be done, but not exactly informative.

I second the hell out of that notion. PT has a very original story line. Very engrossing as well. However, not much replay value after you beat it. The ending is pretty anticlimactic, but the game itself is loads of fun and so are the characters. Overall, a game well worth spending money on.

Yes! "Share" the music of every artist who DARES to have the gall to try to make a living! Keep it up and maybe you'll soon destroy all the artists who want to make music and get paid for the years of labor they put into it. After all, that's what slashdot is about, right? Sticking it to The Man(c) and the utter destruction of capitalism?

If you disagree with a group, write them and tell them. Metallica is against the unauthorized distribution of their music. Doing that right in their faces isn't going to do anything but give them more ammo in the courts. They can now say "hey, we tried to be nice and come to an out-of-court agreement, but obviously people don't care." and can bring in the lawyers and get napster itself shut down. Great work there, tex. We need more brilliants minds like yourself.
