Actually Apple isn't a dominant player in any area is it? I think iTMS may be the is dominant player in legal music stores but that's about it.

The iPod and IPhone are dominant in mindshare of their respective arenas, at least in TV and American pop culture.

I don't think it's actually that dominant in actual market share, specially globally.

Almost everybody I know is using either Nokia, LG or Motorola with a few Samsung phones here and there, I only know two iPhone users (both smug bastards) and three Blackberry users (all stuck up bastards).

Actually I have a complaint about debian, I tried to like it, I still do, but I can't install it on my system.

The installer failed me, it didn't recognize my (integrated) network card which it needed to download the drivers from my usb --when installing from usb-- or dvd --when installing from dvd--

First I tried "testing" netinst, then the first full CD, then the freaking DVD. And it failed.

I tried Linux Mint then, it just worked. Everything.

So I'm sure debian is a great OS but I couldn't get it to work and its mostly their fault, of course they have no obligation to make it easy for ME to install it, I can't demand anything from them, but why couldn't they just rip-off whatever makes Ubuntu/Mint so easy to install? Maybe a "Fat Netinst" that is minimalist yet loads a gazillion Ethernet drivers so that you can actually get to the "inst" part would be good idea.

  22. Re:Ubuntu is about Ubuntu, not about Free Software on Tribalism Is the Enemy Within, Says Shuttleworth · · Score: 1

There really isn't much tribalism in the FOSS world. For starters only the OSS and the FS parts disagree and even then only in philosophy not methods. Other than that the general divide is between toolsets like VI vs EMACS, Qt vs GTK+ or Gecko vs KHTML, which everybody admits is about preferences and even they accept that the competitions is doing some things right.

If I had to reaaaaally close in on a controversial issue it would be Mono divide, but, and this is funny. the sides are formed by people who either want Mono for writing new software and people who ALSO want Mono but not for new software.

So this "tribalism" is really just something happening in Ubuntu as you say and even then it only really is happening because Shuttleworth is reading his textbook from Commander Tarkin. He united a lot of people by saying "here! let's work together!" and now he's all "Ubuntu is not a democracy." and now is acting surprised because the ragtag band of rebels he lead didn't like that attitude.

If it bothers you I propose two solutions:
    a) Give out free ipads to those thousands of kids with respiratory ailments, that's a way to change the survey results radically.
    b) Convince your ipad buddies to care more about other people, that way you could at least get the results to drop the "selfish" part.
