    Possibly yes, but also possibly not. This virus wil disable many common AV programs. My reccomendation would be to use a specialized scanner such as the one from f-secure: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/nyxem_e.shtml. I just used that one myself.

    They do do this.

    They had one setup here in Milwaukee for Summerfest.

    While that's not an emergency, I'm sure something of that nature is on the way to the Gulf as I type this.

    We are still using a client-server model for communications.

    We need a new p2p based mobile voice technology. We have all these low power devices (cell phones) that can both send and recieve data, why not use this capability to devise a self healing mesh network? Are there technological hurdles to this method?

    Actually, that would be zero information.

    negatve information would be reloading the page, it not coming back, and then forgetting which page you reloaded or what was on it.

    sometimes it's just as simple as taking the 20 minute walk instead of the ten-minute drive (people in the city know this one)


    I live 11 blocks from work. I can walk there in about 15 minutes. It can take 20 minutes to drive that if there is a fair going on. Damn Bastile Days... Or Summerfest...

    I also agree. While knowing everything I talked about helped me land my current $11/hour job (while everyone else is making $8.50), It won't help me land the $40,000/yr salary that I could get with a degree. Whats wrong with teaching general understanding AND specific vendors stuff?

    That just completly floored me... I knew Cisco's IOS enough to configure ACLs, BGP, RIP, IGRP, etc, knew enough about wiring standards to wire whole buildings by myself without premade cables, and knew Basic, Pascal and C++, ALL BEFORE I GRADUATED. ...FROM HIGHSCHOOL..... I've never heard of Northeastern University, but I think they need to work on their curriculum. Either that, or I'm WAY farther ahead of the curve than I thought I was.

    I know you're modded funny, but I'm not sure you're actually kidding.

    My view: They have released it for free, and provided links on their site to get it easily, again for free. I might as well encourage people to use BT so the fine developers don't have to pay as much for our free downloads.

    Of course people should buy the CDs. But failing that, at least keep the bandwidth bills down.

    Would this chip have a usefull application in realtime video encoding/decoding? Would I be better off with a high clocked single core AMD proc? Anyone with experiance?

    Why do they need to upgrade at all? If they have hardware that works, why do they need a new OS? If they need a new OS, they are very likely to be buying a new computer anyway. As I said above: 2 or 3 processor/hardware generations is enough. (I'm not talking about you and me here, I'm talking about my parents, friends parents, non-technical people in general)

    I call BS

    OS X runs fine on a G3 450mhz iMac with 192MB of RAM

    I can surf, edit photos with Photoshop and chat using Adium without problems. Granted it's been showing it's age for a while now, but I picked it over my 1Ghz XP box to take to school, which I think says a lot.

    Computer bought in 2000.

    Granted Windows has excellent legacy hardware support, but Apple has always supported AT LEAST 2 processer generations back (which spans 8 years currently, I believe. 7th grade to freshman in college.) Aside from hard drives and monitors, which haven't had a new standard for a long time (I know, SATA and DVI... not widely used yet) do you still use anything that was in your computer 7 years ago? Legacy support is only good for a limited span of time.
