Actually, yes. There's a little program you can run that automates the process of pressing F8 and selecting "Disable Driver Signing Enforcement."
And do the guy below, I wasn't talking out of my ass. If you re-read what I said: "And unlike Vista, they could actually enforce their rules." Referring to how Vista lets you click "Install it anyway" or use the program I mentioned earlier to get around the signed driver 'enforcement.'
And I don't want it. I simply said that the only way Apple could keep you from running their OS on hardware they haven't specifically blessed would be to do that.
I don't think you people bothered to actually read my post before you replied to it.
"...and downloading a file over the internet invokes a 20 second freeze in Firefox."
You know what that is? PEBKAC.
I don't hate Vista as much as most people, I use it as my main OS on my gaming rig, but I did notice that a lot of the changes made just added more actions between a blank desktop and changing any settings.
If you keep the CDRs in a dark air-tight safe, maybe. But any sunlight or air will eventually destroy those CDs. I had a couple of burned discs sitting around on my shelf for 2 years, and when I went to use them they were totally destroyed.
And this is the real answer to the original question. Do everything you can to make backups and copies at home and rotate those disks with alternates kept off-site.
It won't be cheap to set up, but once it's going your only cost is going to be replacing drives that fail. It would be a lot cheaper than 500GB with Amazon's S3.
That would involve Sirius/XM paying the RIAA for content shifting rights.
The XM radio I have has the ability to 'save' an hour or two of the stream, and when it came out the RIAA had a shit fit over people using it for piracy.
It's more like if you buy a pallet of PS3s and turn around and sell them for a dollar over what you paid, which would still be pretty far under the MSRP.
The awesome thing here is that the ISPs are now responsible for all the actions their users take.
Did Bob Aussieman pirate a movie? Well, the ISP should have filtered that out. Did Steve Kiddyporn upload/download illegal pictures of children? The ISP should have stopped it.
By even doing token filtering, they're taking responsibility for everything that happens on their network.
I think the number every year is closer to 30 billion world wide. Which is just 5 sodas for everyone in the world. Think about the people you know who down diet cokes like they're the secret to everlasting youth, and you'll see that number isn't too unreasonable.

No, by Microsoft PR when they said "Windows 7 will be out during the first half of 2009."
Just like a pre-beta isn't an alpha anymore?
I'm afraid of Windows 7 if it's supposed to come out in about 6 months and we haven't even seen a beta yet...
Twitter, is that you?
The only thing they could really do is add a driver signing system like Vista has. And unlike Vista, they could actually enforce their rules.

You.. STREAM the video over the NETWORK. What part of that is hard to understand?
I'm fully aware that the iPhone doesn't have 100% of the cellphone market. But you can't argue that the iPhone is not more popular than the Android.
Except Nick is already coding for the iPhone because the user base is already a couple million.
The awesome thing is that Apple's one phone is going to sell more than all the Android phones combined.
Joe User doesn't care about open source. He cares about his phone being 'cool.'
And I care about being able to only have one device instead of 3.
If you want to be technical, everything is going to die eventually. Even if Humans never evolved on this planet, it would still be a dying world.
Is Twitter worth millions? Last I heard they were having a hard time figuring out how to make any money...

I know that Honda has a deal with XM to use XM's birds to send some data to Honda's in-dash navigation systems.
Idea: Maybe you should have planned out your future instead of just pumping out 37 hungry future criminals.
But it is a douche move.
Not at all.

Sometimes you just want to listen to some music while you're working out.
/. not TMZ.
I thought this was
Wow, did you really just name-drop on /.?
That's really sad.
IIRC, TPB currently offers such a service for a small fee.

Congratulations! You're the billionth grammar nazi to post on /.!
