    With a few exceptions, battery life just sucks with an aging laptop. and replacement batteries are either used up themselves, insanely expensive, or impossible to find.

    TThere is precedent in the courts that says a fax signature is acceptable and legally binding. There is no precedent saying that an e-mailed document in digital form is. Yes... But that could mean the opposite of what you think it means.

    i.e. "the GPL has never been tested in court, therefore, its not a valid license"

    no, im not talking about that one guy whose dell caught fire. im talking about what happens if you remove the protection circuit and short the leads of a lithium cell together...... its not the lithium thats the issue, its the entire lithium battery package.

    When someone invents e-paper that lets you flip between several arbitrary points in a work easily, ill invest in /them/

    e-paper is very very very very very (very) linear at the moment. nothing is going to help much with a 1000ms refresh rate

    uhhh this was a jury case. in fact 12 people, approved by both parties, in their right mind, agreed unanimously on the amount.

    One third of the jury admitted to being illiterate, but if i were them, hearing over and over how this costs them billions a year, i might pity them too. Only having studied them do they seem so evil, to the average joe they seem like a charity case

    I actually clicked through expecting a great discussion and determine if it was an actual global issue, or just something isolated to that network.

    sure sure "it aint the good ol days" of slashdot, thats for sure. But the discussion, if true, could have tremendous value. There is no other forum I am aware of that such a wide variety of geeks frequent, and to its credit, the discussion did answer the question. Since it was "no" it sort of seems like a waste. but it /could/ have been interesting!

    worth a shot sometimes

    Not sure if a cellular phone is acceptable for your situation or not, but one of my favorite features is "custom ringtones" based on caller-ID.
    If you set the main ringer to silent, and custom audibles for your friends, should work no problem!

    Which brings up another good question, in that i have a cellular phone the size of a pile of credit cards, with all these awesome features. but every cordless phone on the shelf looks like the same basic piece of shit they have been since the 80s. sure, maybe a color display now, but same basic crappiness.

    If the world made sense, your cordless phone would have a similar enough featureset to get the job done

    good question, and yes! it does matter! as much as the space station is "international" its really only from an interoperability point of view. the russians built the russian segment, and the russians control the russian segment. they also refuse to use assets not 100% owned by them to do main guidance computer updates for their segment.

    eventually the plan is to have a fully redundant self sustaining russian AND united states attitude control, life support, communications etc etc. but the module with the US thrusters and oxygen generation isnt up there yet.

    Far as i know they still test EPA mileage ratings by using an exhaust sniffer and rollers.... indoors.... it fails to account for AIR RESISTANCE!

    far as im concerned they should require someone to /actually drive/ the damn car through an /actual city/ and average the results to get the fuel rating.

    Not entirely true.... The revolt started after they proactivly removed posts that /talked/ about the takedown notice, or talked about AACS in any way. they BANNED the accounts of users posting stories such as "where did that other story go?" and the revolt started from there. from how i understand it

    it sure would be nice if it was some sort of modern form of protest, but its digg for cripes sake. its just 15 year olds pulling the same shit they pull on every other forum. no free speech issue. no copyright issue. just your standard overzealous admin meets overzealous user scenario.
