There are far too many TV shows that last for too long. They just peter out and die. Bob Newhart stopped the Bob Newhart show because he didn't want it to become stale. So he went and started a new show. I think that's great for Whedon. Most fans of Buffy would agree that it shouldn't have gone on for as long as it has. Simpsons is another great example of a show that has become worse with age. Stop while you're ahead. There are always new oceans to sail.
The language I recommend for people to learn is PHP. It's quite easy to learn. Since it's interpreted, it's quick and easy to hack around with. It gives you the power of a real programming language (unlike Basic). And it's immediately useful. It always surprises me how college CS programs largely ignore scripting languages. I would venture to say the majority of programmers in the world program using scripting languages. The internet is run on scripting languages for the most part. Also, from a teaching perspective, you can do anything in a scripting language that you can do in C (ie. Linked Lists, Sorting Algorithms, etc.)
Yeah, and run the risk of a buffer overflow error in my frontal lobe? No thanks.

A Flu Pandemic?
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
If you're not one of the typical flu victims (elderly, very young or compromised immune system from other causes), you'll have an excellent chance to shrug it off, even if it does spread.
Actually the 1918 virus was much more deadly in people with strong immune systems. I can't remember the exact figures, but the percentage of death in the 20-40 age range was higher than any other. This was because the victims died from the over-response of the host's immune system. Unfortunately, it looks like this virus would be the same way if it mutates to humans.
The mess we're in is unfortunately that some Democrats want the government to parent our children because they're too busy having a career to think about the future of our species.
Actually, it's generally the Republicans who are trying to get the government to parent the children. It's us Democrats that are... what was the term... oh, yeah, anti-family.
Now that would be some legislation I could get behind. ( just kidding, please don't flame me if you're Canadian. I'm not from Minnesota so there's really not much you can do to me. )
I also hope they take a stand. The lawsuit is quite silly and the timing makes Tiger's intentions quite clear. They only have interest in making a quick buck. The reason I hope they make a stand is that everytime something like this is rewarded, the temptation to do it is increased for others. Everytime a suit like this is defeated, precedence helps lessen the likelihood of another similar incident.
This is something I hate, people having really valid points and then corroborating said points with ridiculous arguments. 1 in 455 chance of being hit by a comet, having an earth shaddering volcano, or whatever? Did he even think that over before he said it, or has weightlessness affected his ability of discernment?
Unfortunately, this clouds the fact that spreading out the species is a good idea. It is a very precarious situation that we find ourselves. Almost every country has their fingers on the triggers of weapons that could do more damage than all but your largest asteroids. We naively thought it was all over after the Cold War. Having another colony would be great because it would create enough distance that political relations between Earth and Mars (for example) would be able to progress very separately (for the most part). It would be a long time before people were in close enough contact to start hating each other enough to kill one another. Hopefully, by that time we'd have more colonies, and the human race would be spread over the galaxy. Then again, is that really a good thing for the galaxy. Maybe pulling that trigger now would save the galaxy a lot of problems.
But, in any case, 1 in 455 may sound silly for a natural event, but I'd say it's not too far off for chances that we'll all kill ourselves, or do enough damage to equate to anhilation.
Google, like TV stations, doesn't exist to provide you with a handy search tool. It exists to provide advertisers with you, their audience.
I would have to kindly disagree. I think Google actually exists to provide people with a handy search tool. That's why I love Google so much. They seem to really care about what they do rather than just care about the bottom line. Now, that said, they still want to make money, and they will try to continue to make as much as possible. But ultimately, I feel like Google is most interested in providing an amazing service.
The only fear is whether or not they can maintain that attitude. Many small companies start with a real mission to do something good for society, but as the company expands, it's hard to maintain that sort of vision. (Microsoft excluded, they were evil from the inseption) So hopefully Google will be able to maintain the bottom-line so that the execs and shareholders are happy, but that they still maintain the desire to provide a great service.
Yes, it might not put them out of business. And the difference between $100 million and $120 million may not seem much to us, but corporations notice things like that. I am also one who will never purchase something with this sort of restriction. Protecting your rights is one thing; raping consumers of theirs is a completely different issue.
Better example: a book. A book is a physical good which you can give to your friend at the click of a button. It's called a copier. Granted, it might not be quite as simple as software, but it's still pretty easy. And with most software, unless you're using a crack, it's a little more involved than the click of a button because you have to copy it to a new CD, just like copying a book. So there!:P
I usually try to stay civil as well, but you're just a pompous idiot. That's far worse than an idiot.
All you needed to do was click the little "pi" symbol at the bottom of the screen. That would have given you all the auditing information you needed, including access to the FBI mainframe. Just don't push ESC. That would be very bad.
You darn Canadians. Quit telling us how wonderful socialism is. We don't have to go up there to know that you are all dieing to come to America and that most of the people there are starving to death in the streets. At least, that's what our Republican masters have told us, and who am I to doubt?
Anyone else notice that the kid in the blue cape doesn't seem to like the idea of his picture being taken (it's the picture where they're actually playing chess on the floor). I think it's the look of a child who is just starting to understand the concept of public education "coolness" and having your picture displayed on Slashdot in a blue cape while playing RF connector chess with your Dad is not very high on the list of "cool" right now. My heart goes out to you little buddy.
I think the biggest, most compeling illustration of wikipedia's success is that fact that almost everyone here has probably (there's that word probably again) benefited from it. I know I have. Although the information may be somewhat inaccurate, I'm a discerning adult. Overall, my experiences with wikipedia have been wonderful, and I have used it far more than I have nor ever will use any other encyclopedia.
A very different alternate reality might have developed if (a) Ken Olsen had jumped onto UNIX and (b) successfully put it onto desktop PCs early on.
Alternate reality?!? That sounds awesome. Would I be able to fly and pick up large buildings in that reality. If so, it's probably wise that Ken Olsen dismissed UNIX back in the 70's. I can assure you all that I would not have used my powers for good.
Not only is it a rip off of Google's UI, it has some appearance issues. I thought it looked ugly because I was in firefox but no; ie looks almost as bad. Does anyone else think the interface looks and feels really awkward, or am I all alone here?
So, going to work on time and doing your job is really putting your family first by putting a roof over their heads and food on the table.
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then
Well, if you're going with Bob's House O' Hosting, which is some dude in his parent's basement with a DSL modem, of course you're going to have problems. I'm talking about companies like Verio that guarantee data integrity.
My solution is that I don't save things on my computer that I want to keep. There are plenty of hosting companies that give plenty of disk space for real cheap. These companies make it their business to not get hacked and if/when they do to get backups up immediately. That way I don't have to worry about it at all. Also, I can access the information from anywhere in the world.
...else the remaining OS/2 userbase will entirely fragment.
I guess you're right, if the two or three OS/2 users all go in different directions, they will have entirely fragmented.

I use telnet and render the HTML mentally.
Yeah, and run the risk of a buffer overflow error in my frontal lobe? No thanks.

Crap, looks like we're stuck with the non-integral rationals.
"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." Col. Jeff Cooper
Whereas an armed man can replicate the evil.
Does that mean I'll start having to program with two's and three's?

The main problem is the fonts. It could also just be that my computer doesn't have the fonts.
