I'm sorry, but 1% isn't that much when you consider how many windows boxen there are...
You are also forgetting the power of word of mouth. From my personal experience anyway, the main reason that people use IE is because a) they don't know there is an alternative and b) they are afraid(unrationally so, but again, this is just my opinion on my personal experiences) they won't be able to use a new browser. If people start helping others by installing mozilla, it's growth could really take off.
Kind of like the ol' MCI commericial; If you help 2 friends ditch IE, and then they help 2 firends, and then they help 2 friends...
feature? A lot of people have been talking about how macs aren't very popular targets, and thus why there are not more viruses for them, which is true. I'm not going to stand here and tell you that Macs are invincible from remote exploits, but there are other places were a virus can get into the system due to a clueless user, namely email attatchments. Mac's default mail application contains a pretty nice spam filter. Outlook/outlook express(last time I checked anyway) does not have a spam filter, you get it all. A significant number of windows viruses/exploits come from the fact that users will click on strange attatchments. Provided you have a good enough spam filter, than the user will never have any reason to go sorting through the junk mail, and will probably be less likely to click random attatchments in the junk folder.
MS will probably catch up to speed in longhonn when they introduce spam filters, but that is a while away still.
Food for thought.
The book is called "Nineteen Eighty-Four" not "1984", accordingly I presume you intended to link to this page rather than this one.
I dunno, that was the year the mac was released, and to some people on/. anything that isn't linux is a serious threat to freedom.(I'm joking here, yeah, I messed up, thanks for pointing that out)
It is true that the general computer usability has been brought to the level of intelligence of an average religious fanatic. It is also true that the encryption and computer security are not there yet.
Seriously, go to any decent sized university in the US and walk by the CS grad offices tell me that there aren't any Islamic fundamentalists who are capable of using encryption.... Mohammed Atta had a degree in architecture
I think also Mousoui(don't know how to spell) was a doctor, though I cannot find the info.
but I don't see anyone moving to block them. Seriously, how will this stop terrorists? You can go to walmart.com and get a computer that is quite capable of decent encryption for $200, and maybe an extra $150 or so tops for a monitor. Internet access $20 a month. You can also get a ton of books(in pdf) off of limewire/kazaa/whatever. The terrorists of 9/11 were well financed, I'm sure the billionaire Bin Laden could afford a few thousand worth of computer equipment. All this provision does is help the FBI spy on average people, not terrorists. *begin rant
Also, what is this BS of people breaking house rules just because they want their law passed. The abuse of procedure here pales in comparison to what happened in the medicare bill. Why do we even have congress anymore? With the rise of political parties(which Washington warned against in his farewell speech), pretty much all the votes are predictable. With a few notable exceptions most congressmen are sheep, toeing the party line..... Maybe if we had some more original thought in congress, stuff like this wouldn't happen end rant
heh, these aren't your typical bloods and crypts. They are basically an extension of the gangs in places like Vietnam and Korea. And they hate eachother as bad, if not worse, than the participants of the gang wars of the late 80's early 90's. They also tend to only fight amongst other asians, and a lot of the crime goes unreported. more info here
It's also difficult for police to deal with these gangs because of hte large cultural and language barriers. I think this is just an attempt to keep them out of eachothers hair, though to me it's kinda like a leaky boat in one of those cartoons, plug up one hole and another one will spring open.
hands up in the air on this one. My bet is that they tend to have a much harder time dealing with these (sometimes very violent) asian gangs than other gangs simply because it is a lot harder to get inside these gangs. They come from very tight communities and in most cases don't even speak a language that the cops can undertsand. Seems like by the police are trying to take away areas were the gangs could potentially have a conflict. However to me it doesn't sound like a very effective plan... if they are pissed off at eachother enough to drive a screwdriver through someone, then chances are they will go looking for trouble.
is a "smarter" spam filter in mail. The current spam filter works relatively well in identifying spam, the only problem I have with it is it does tend to have too many false positives for my taste.
The filter as it stands right now is pretty basic, it would be nice if they could(as an option of course) put in a Baysein filter in mail. Hopefully that would stop a lot of the false positives I get currently.
A lot of the features in Tiger seem like they require a lot of power; 64 bit processes, spotlight(eats disk I would imagine), core video requires a better card than is in the stock g5 config(though you can upgrade the card for only $50 more, but that also delays your shipment by a week...grrr...)
So you may not even be all that happy with Tiger on a lower end mac...what better exceuse for an upgrade of course!
Heh, well just remember if the US was only interested in it's own affairs, Mexico would control Texas and California, Native Americans would still rule most of the midwest, Cuba would be a Spanish colony, and Canada may very well have been a province of Cuba. If you look at American history, America has done nothing but get involved in affairs people though it had no business getting involved in.... something to think about.
an absolute, nailed on "please let me bear your children" hit with the ladies.
I don't know where you learned biology, but in human beings usually it is the female who does the actual c hild bearing...
was wondering if my fellow lefties can help me out here. As you are aware, there is currently a huge humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Some would even call it genocide. I have no problem with that. But what I can't seem to figure out is how the United States is to blame, as we usually are at fault.
Nobody is saying the US is at fault, people are complaining because the US(well the reason of the day anyway) says that it invaded Iraq to help the Iraqi people out from a brutal dictator. Saddam was a kitten compared to what is going on in Sudan, and yet the US does nothing.
I really think that the reason the US is doing nothing is because the action in Iraq has stretched US military strength to the breaking point, and if something REALLY bad does happen(even worse than Sudan) then the US is kind of screwed
Yeah, I'm gonna burn karma on this one, but it had to be said.
My parents taught me not to call people assholes because they have an idea that disagrees with yours. Maybe you should go look up basic manners before you start lecturing me.
My parents also told me that when you assume something, you make an ass out of you and me(just like you assumed that the only anime I watched was on cartoon network)
My parents also instilled pride in who I am and where I come from, and while I should be respectful of other cultures, I should not deny who I am and pretend to be someone else.
My parents also taught me to speak in one language at a time, instead of adding in random Japanese terms when speaking English.
Maybe if you, oh I dunno, read the post instead of narrowing in on one sentence you would realize that the parent was trying to say that Westerners do not appreciate a good story. I was pointing out that there is a lot of great work in western society too, and that the whole "Westerners don't appreciate a good story" is a bunch of bs. Just as there are a lot of great stories in Japan, but there is also a lot of bs too. It's the same across all socities.
Please actually respond to the idea of the post instead of taking one sentence out of context next time, ok?
3. Many of the "good ones" are those that actually have interesting stories and it's known that in most cases, western customers prefer a straight to the point experience and don't care to get involved with the story.
Yeah, because Shakespeare was Japanese....please
I love Japan, spent 6 months over there doing R&D and cannot wait to go back, but statements like this just aggrivate me. Have you ever been to Japan? Have you seen the massive amounts of really bizzare dating-sim esque porn?
Seems to me that the Japanese are just as likely to indulge in some story-less fun as people in the west.
I hate this "Anime is the highest form of human art attainable" attitude. Yes, anime is great, but so is the Simpsons, so is Fight Club, so is The Illiad, so is Saving Private Ryan
Have you ever actually watched Japanese TV? It is, for the most part, more inane than American television....
It's almost impossible to cheat on Jeopardy. The questions come at you pretty rapidly and they are open ended(unlike the multiple choice in millionaire). You also have to be quick on your buzzer to win.
If someone actually manages to cheat in Jeopardy, they deserve the money.
Or...you could PAY for the program like you are supposed to. Just because you can copy something doesn't mean you should. I like the Pimsleur program and am proud to have paid for it. If it's worth listening to it is worth supporting.
P.S. Please don't include any of that "Pirating isn't stealing" bs.
For the rossetta stone software

IMO, Amazon is always a great first place to look, if only for the reviews(even if you don't end up buying anything off them)
Search for arabic software/books and see what other people have said.
You always have to take the reviews with a grain of salt, some people provide very insightful reviews, some one sentence, some have an axe to grind, and some haven't even used the product, but feel they need to chime in on it anyway.
Kinda like/. in that regards though!
Happy hunting!
