MVCC requires extra overhead at the time of the operation or a vacuum. PostgreSQL went the vacuum route as it's believed this provides for an off-peak window where this can better be addressed. If you don't push for a vacuum approach, you must take the performance hit at the time of the update or delete operation.
Surprisingly, B2s are not "invisible" to radar either. They just have a small radar signature. B2s purposely plan their routes of attack where radar coverage is the weakest. They would not bother for this very complex flight planning if they were "invisible".
I also know someone that was able to achieve a radar lock on a flying B2 at an air show. But that was military grade radar and not your run of the mill FAA station. Granted, they were very close and it was not anything that reflected a combat situation. My point being, B2s can be seen on radar. The catch is, in most cases, by the time you see one on radar, you're blowing up shortly after; so little good it does ya.
Lastly, I'll add, the lock was not achieved in the B2's best case, front/rear/side cross section; rather, it was a bottom profile.
I think my main complaint about starbucks is the fact that they don't seem to know how to *not* burn their coffee beans.
Starbucks purposely burns their beans because it's the only way they can ensure the same taste at every store in the world, regardless of the bean source or time of year. It's actually part of their business plan, according to Starbucks. While the taste is horrid to me, it seems to have worked well for them. In my opinion, it's why they are able to sell so many flavored coffees; which is to cover up the taste of their burned beans. Ultimately, that makes additional profit for them.
Extentions exist to address this issue (including a case insensative text data type) or he can simply use ILIKE vs LIKE. If this is his sticking point, it's about as weak a troll as you can get. It's not like viable solutions are not readily available.
Glad to know you think the entire military is dumb. Seems you stand proudly with Kerry. Good job! You see, I didn't know that until you a Kerry pointed it out. Good job!
LOL! Too funny! Please...keep showing everyone just how smart you are! LOL! Too funny.
I noticed my previous message to you hit home. I'm sorry. It's still not too late for you to get help. Those numbers are at the front of your phone book. You still have my pity. You obviously need it.
You're really becoming entertaining. Keep it up! Please! The modding just gets better and better too. These days I see you troll-modding and it just proves how gay you are. LOL! Good job!
Well, to be fair, that's not an apples to apples comparison.
Military guys get bonus left and right for this and that. If you are in a combat zone, you get a combat pay bonus plus you don't pay taxes. You also get free medical. I know a lot of people love to knock the free medical the military provides but it's actually better than most Americans receive. And, if you fly in a combat zone, you also receive flight pay. Not to mention, if you're away, you receive a family separation allowance. And let's not forget a housing allowance. Or, if you stay on base, you have zero rent and zero utilities.
For a lowly grunt, that left his family behind for a war zone, that works out to be a monthly pay of: $1204 + $225 (combat pay) + $150 (if you fly); all of which is tax free. If you're married, your take home is better and you get a family separation allowance plus can qualify for a housing allowance. If they are taking a housing allowance then they still need to pay utilities. That works out to be pretty good. Remember, that's all tax free while you are in a combat zone.
Time to re-up? Well, chances are you'll get a bonus ranging from $2,000 - $20,000, depending on what you do.
Simple fact is, like any job, the pay is low starting out. But if you stay in, things continue to get better year after year...assuming you actually try for promotion. And if you stay in long enough, you can actually retire with partial pay (somewhere around 40%-70%). I'm sorry, I have family that's in the military (Army pilot) and they do very well. Those that complain about military pay simply don't understand what the military has to offer. Heck, if you go in as an officer, life is even better. And, they either will be getting a raise or have received a raise.
For a quick comparison, compare a single teen making $8.00/hr tyring to live on his own. Assume a modest appartment of $600 - $800/mo. His take home is ~$960/mo after taxes; assuming a 40/hr week. Now, let's subtract out his rent and utilities. That's $960 - $600 - $100. He now has $260/mo left to eat and enjoy. Compare that with the military guy that has ~960/mo to eat spend. Easily, the military kid has it WAY better.
Now then, if you are in a combat zone and have no family, that's $1429/mo, tax free, with all expenses paid. If you spend a year there, you come home with $17,148 in your pocket, tax free. No wonder lots of military guys are driving brand new vehicles and replace them every couple of years.
My point is, while the salary may appear low at face value, once you add in everything else, it's really not that low. And in fact, it's actually better than most grunts could do right out of high school, by a long shot!
LOL. Well...I had pity on you. Just remember you're alone for a reason. You replied exactly as I knew you would; though I honestly do wish you would seek help. Its really very sad. Do you have any idea how empty you appear? How badly you're crying out for help? What's worse, as pethetic as you appear, we all know you're much, much worse on the inside. You still have my pity. And yes, I'm still laughing at you from your other posts.
Yes...and it's very sad that I might respond to you as a person. A sad, tiny person, but a person nonetheless. Again, you have my pity. I never realized that treating people as people was considered a weakness. Once again, you have my pity.
Seriously dude, find a professional and get some help. I'm not saying that to be mean. I'm not saying this to poke fun. You're obviously very seriously ill and need medical attention. Think about it for a second. Seriously, try to be rational. You're stalking a guy, online, because I pointed out that you were wrong and your position was moronically stupid, while you pethetically attempted to scramble for attention in an anonymous forum. Seriously dude, you have some serious mental issues and you seriously need some help.
At this point, you should just sign your posts... "Mr. Homo Stalker"... Too bad you can't sign your mod-stalking points as above. After all, it would help everyone understand how much you're screaming for attention. Maybe you'll be able to get with your obvious homosexial cravings (you are stalking a male after all).
Merry Christmas. Seriously...get some help. While I'm sure your family won't have any contact with you, and you don't have friends, open the phone book and find an 800 help number.
I'm okay with that. Or, one could argue that the holy spirit used natural weather, as would be his creation to use, as a teaching instrument. Religion and science need not oppose each other. Make of it what you will.
Hmm. I've never tried to find a reference online. I have seen it stated in many documentaries at this point. They went back to the original text and retranslated and found various translation errors exist. The one I mentioned, while minor, makes for a drastic modification of the story...which is why I remember it.
The deal is, the work which was translated can mean "all this land" (or something close to that), or "the world". Given the context, for most agree that "the world" for most people of the time really doesn't mean "the world". And in fact, it was commonly used to express the "known world"; meaning, the very small patch of dirt which was known to your typical man back then.
Later, when people went to translate the biblical stories, since it was a holy story and the context had been lost, the translators, of course, took it to mean the literal definition rather than the common use, common sense, or even most likely definition. In other words, based on the geologic record and the common use of the word and the actual definition, as used back then, the entire world did NOT flood....only several large vallies.
So which is more likely? That a zealot, without social context, mistranslated a word which would make it sound more grand or that a very large, regional flood occured, which is sustantiated by the geological record?
Wow! You are a serious loser. You troll-mod my posts left and right and have now start trolling my posts again. I have a hard time imagining a bigger loser. Seriously! Shesh. You seriously need to find some friends and a hobby. But I imagine with a personality like yours, finding friends is pretty hard. Hopefully your real-world personality isn't close to the persona you put forward in the online world. I sincerely hope that's not the case.
Seriously...do you think for a second that stalking me and troll-moding my posts does anything other than validate how pathetic your life is?
This may be the Christmas season talking...but I sincerely hope you can make a friend and your life gets better. I honestly didn't realize how sad and lonely you were when you first started stalking me...but I sincerely hope you meet someone which makes life a little better for you. If your parents are still in the picture, consider reaching out to them because the holidays are only going to get worse for people in your situation.
One last little tidbit.../. is a very tiny, tiny part of my life. No matter how much you wrongly troll-mod my posts and stalk me on line...my life is damn good. And at the end of the day, my life encompasses far more than a chair a keyboard. I hope you can one day say the same.
It's obvious you're crying out for help. Have you considered talking to someone like a professional? Chances are your parents are not in the picture...but seriously...try to make a new friend and see if your life doesn't feel so empty.
How did all the animals fit on Noah's Ark? If there were just 2 of the animals (dogs for instance) why are they so different now?
For what it's worth, it's now fairly well understood that part (a word actually) of the bible was incorrectly translated. In fact, it's thought the translation error is well known by the likes of the Vatican but was not corrected because the error makes for a better story. Most people think the "world" flooded (as is commonly told) but the literal translation of the story indicates ONLY the surrounding valleys flooded. In this case, the valleys accounts for a massive area of land but is a far, far cry from the entire world (small percentage of the total land mass; aka regional flood). Again, worth mentioning, for most people of the time, an area that large was the "the world" to them. Interestingly, while floods are not uncommon, a massive (much larger than your typical) flood which coincides with the Noah timetable has been discovered in the geologic record.
I always find that bit of biblical correction to be interesting and worth mentioning when it pops up.
Why is it necessary that all types of life everywhere in the universe has to be carbon based ? Why should even the lowest level consciousness need water to exist ?
Simple. Carbon is one of the most abundant resources available. It's what we're based on. If non-carbon life exists, it's not entirely clear what we should be looking for; though some have attempted to add theoretical substance to the topic. Water, on the other hand is a requisite for life here on Earth. As Earth is the only template we have, and water is such a basic requisite here, it makes sense that it's a reasonable requirement elsewhere too.
In the least, we have dreams of moving to mars...and since we require water...it's something we'd want to find anyways. Besides, with water you get H2 and O...both of which can prove important on a far-off planet for humans.
I was born in 70 and I saw this coming. It's not like someone flipped a switch and e suddenly had the no child left behind crap. This was a slow swing and anyone that cared to look to see it coming. So I agree with you. The grandparent post is wrong, the is an effect which can easily have been observed for the last several decades.
Exactly! Sports have become the new science! People donate to sports crap and not libraries and science/tech. Those that are smart are looked down on by the masses. You are completely correct in that the US has a serious culture problem.
that one of the grandest cities in the richest country in the world should have so much that is of such a low standard.
If people are lazy and feel entitled, there is not a lot you can do about it. Either you maintain the status quo or you round them up and move them elsewhere. Which would you prefer? The shame is for the people that insist on living like that...not for the country in which they live. What is shameful is the small percentage that is caught up in that life style, who want to do better, but simply have no one to help them find a better way.
Instead I found a country that was deeply divided, where for far too many people a person's value was based on their bank balance.
Well, sadly, this is true...especially in the larger cities. IMO, this one of the reasons why NY was attacked. I've never seen that attitude exuded more than by NYers. Dallas is a wanna-be NY, and you can see the same type of disgusting behavior here too. Houston is not like that. IF you go outside of the big cities, chances are, you won't find that behavior either. I wish I could say this wasn't true, but it is. One again, with sadness, I can say this is not a new cultural discovery. If you read about the first financial power houses of America, you'll find there is a long history of such behavior.
I only ever met 3 people who didn't have the view that the homeless and mentally ill were responsible for their own conditions, and all 3 had lived for long times in other countries (UK, Oz and Singapore).
I guess I did cast a wide net in my coments. I was not intending to include the mentally ill in my statements. The homeless which are not mentally ill, are very often content to live on the street because they don't want to work. And surprisingly, some homeless can actually make $20k-$60k (yes, seriously!) by begging in large cities. Of course, often that money is blown on alcohol and drugs... Are you including these in the "mentally ill" category? I don't. Now then, to be clear, in my previous post, I'm talking about the impoverished that do live is crappy conditions, living hand to mouth, goverment check to check. The VAST majority of these people live like that directly of their own actions. They often have a desire to complain about everything and do absolutely nothing about it...other than wait for their next check.
On a side note, do you believe my post to be "troll" rating worthy? I can respectfully disagree...but "troll"?
My wife's parents were very, very, very poor. They still lived in a very humble neighborhood when I started dating her. There were two types of people that lived in that neighborhood. Those that were working to get out (like my wife's parents)...and those that were looking to live like trash.
Wow...you must of visited the coastal areas right after the hurricanes hit; because what you're describing certainly isn't America. It does, however, describe a small subsect of American subculture.
You need to remember, in America, most of the areas which have 'poverty far exceeding that of other "less developed" nations.', are impoverished because that's the life style chosen by those people. You need to remember there is an entire subculture of Americans whos sole goal in life is to figure out how to obtain more federal assistance while doing absolutely nothing. And since they have so much free time, crime and breeding is a popoular past time...after all, not only can you make money doing it, but you can also increase your federal assistance by pumping out babies. You need to remember, there are people right now, suing for additional federal assistance, which has run out following their relocation after the hurricanes. Assistance, I might hadd, which had already been extended a number of times...including free housing which is, in some cases, a magnitude nicer than they had before. Most of these people can work...and work is available, yet refuse to work because they prefer hand outs and free money from the government and people around them. In all cities where a major influx of refugees have been received, the crime rates have gone through the roof. Parts of Houston and Dallas have been especally hit hard...in some cases, violent crimes have more than doubled and theft has quadroupled.
The vast majority of Americans have available to them at least some form of health care and education up to at least high school is readily available, yet often squandered. Now granted, it may not be America's finest health care, but I pay a lot for my own health care and it's not the finest America has to offer. In fact, for the poor, finding the time (without pay) to receive that health care is usually the hardest part of obtaining health care in the US.
The long of the short, you have a very jaded, unrealistic view of a small subset of American society.
Case in point, next door to us a house was provided to a government program which allows people to get out of the ghettos. The house's value is in the $180k range, located in the south. That's a nice, two story, 2800sq/ft house, in a middle, upper class neighborhood. Their cost was only $250/mo for what should have been $1600/mo for anyone else. They lived there for less than a year when they were finally kicked out. In that year, the entire house was trashed. All the sheetrock on three rooms had to be replaced. Three doors, including an exterior door, had to be replaced. ALL of the flooring had to be replaced and every room had to be repainted. Before they moved in, every room had received high-end paint and trim. The owner wound up spending some four thousand dollars (at last count he shared with me) to modestly repair the damage that had been done to the home. This was the thanks he received for providing a helping hand. The short of the long, their exists a subculture in America which feel the government owes them everything and they should not be responsible for anything.
You also need to consider that America has a large number of poor, illegal aliens. These people often live poor, receive federal assistance, and don't pay taxes, as they try to scratch their way up to find their own version of the American dream. In many cases, their poor and impoverished living conditions far exceed what they left in Mexico or some other part of the world.
Any rate, you might consider learning more about the subject before you share your uninfomred views on America. After that's all said and done, there are certainly a very small number of homeless and poor which are trying to find/make a better life for themselves...but it's fairly uplikely that's what you've observed.
Add this to the fact that a lot of people still don't think of Novell as an open source company, but rather a company that has some open source products.
Ironically, from a business perspective, that's a selling point! Most businesses don't want to be in the zealot cross fire. So finding a low cost solution from a credible company which just received a major cash infusion from a well known company, which is not just some open source company, is nothing but goodness. A lot of people still remember the.com crash and still don't want their infrastructure investiment to follow.
From your perspective that may sound like a reason to open the cannon ports but for most businesses, this is at least a supporting reason to open their wallets.
Oh and I pity the movie theater that installs a jammer and then has a patron have a heart attack in the middle of the movie and die. "We tried to call 911 but we had no signal". I know a few dozen ambulance chasers that would love such a case.
Yes...I too pity the idiots that can't run from the theater to use a land line. And I'm sure the ambulance chasers would be thrill to chase these idiots that sat there, staring at their phone, refusing to use a land line phone, which they know is near by. Sounds to me, theater owners, 1, idiots, 0.
Personally, I can't wait until theaters have jammers....or better yet...simply escort the rude, selfish idiots out of the theater.
Even "Power Rangers" probably has fairly muted effects since it's pretty devoid of any real substance.
I'm always amazed at the number of people that believe violence has no effect on children. I'm not sure if this is mass ignorance or willful action to ignore what's obvious to anyone that cares to look. We had to stop our children from watching Power Rangers because our oldest would start beating the crap out of our youngest immediately after watching that show...almost every time. The preferred method of harm was kicking. In the show, the preferred method of attach was kicking. Hmmm. Without the influence of the show, the violence stopped. Hmmm. But obviously that was not an influence.
Simple fact is, kids emulate what they see. I see the degradation of our society on a daily basis...in what I believe to be result of things like video games. Chances are, you do to, but simply don't recognize it. When I was growing up, it was rare for others to enjoy the pain of others. People would rush to aid and share in their pain. These days, if they are under 25, I usually see people rolling on their backs laughing while bone is popping out. To them, someone else's pain is truly something to relish. Take a look on various video sites and watch some videos created by young people. It is shocking how much these losers enjoy the physical pain of others. Hell, look at America's Funniest Videos. Most of their clips are nothing but people being physically injured and people think it's the funniest thing they have ever seen. The vast majority of these types of clips are not even funny. Seriously, is someone working on a roof and falling off funny? Yet something has taught these people that injury to others is funny and should be enjoyed. This is not by accident.
The long of the short, we are ALL influenced by our environment. Period. This is a well established fact.
To be absoluete clear here, I am by no means saying that violence in video games is directly causing kids to mass murder, etc. It doesn't work like that for healthy humans. What I am saying, these types environmental factors influence everyone and you can easily see the negative social impact its making on the current generation; in my opinion anyways.
What we know: Environmental factors influence the development of humans - especially during early development. Commonly, these days, violence is a large part of young humans. This means violence is a known influence in their life and is having *some* effect; more than likely negative.
Lastly, sciences which document social behaviors is very difficult. Things which are inheritly obvious to even the causual observer are still terribly difficult to scientifically document and support because the number of factors are so large and the human brain so complex. So just because it can not be scientifically proven there exists a direct link does not mean such a link does not exist.
In other words, the ONLY real question at this point, how many kids are negatively effected and what effect is it really having on the kid. Those that say there exist no impact are simply in denial as science already disproves that position.
If you don't mind me asking, I'd love to hear your take on the PS3 as a platform. What type of work on you doing on it? In your opinion, in your current project, are you guys leveraging what the platform has to offer? Most of what I've read seems to indicate the platform is woefully underused in the current round of titles. You agree? Again, in your opinion, what do you consider the biggest weakness of the platform?
Odds are better than equal many if not most game studios 'have a clue' when it comes to design fundamentals - you're able to throw stones ONLY because you're not down in the trenches, saddled with not only the aesthetic of pure design, but also the ugly details of implimenetation (and deadlines!).
Oh absolute BS!
I have a fairly long history in software engineering AND implementation and I can't even begin to tell you how many times we've been screwed by non-engineering factors. Simple fact is, the rule of thumb is, engineering has little to no say in either the target date or the technology which is to be used. Engineering says we want x. A moron up top says...but everyone else is using y. We'll use y too. Period. It's the same logic as, no one ever got fired for buying IBM.
This has nothing to do with trenches and much more likely to have everything to do with poor management. There are soooo many other factors here I don't know where to begin...but chances are...the one at the top of the list have little to nothing to do with technology and everything to do with management and/or ignorance.
However, the amount of time you have to spend on the per-platform stuff is actually pretty high, so adding a new platform is always an expensive operation.
Which is exactly my point. The fact that you're still contending the per-platform cost is high means (assuming in the areas I put forward; else your point is in left field) someone is not doing their job smartly. And no, that's not a stab at you.
Contrary to your assertions, it's not that game devs are stupid; it's that supporting minor platforms like Linux rarely makes any financial sense.
I'm sorry, but I don't believe that...nor do I believe you have any more numbers than I do. That statement would hold water some five years ago, but I do not believe it's true today. Having said, platforms like Linux are hardly going to be the most profitable either. To run with this, if Mac is to be targetted, and cross platform is desired, then you are already 90%+ of the way there for Linux...so while your return may not be great, neither is your investiment...which was my point. Add into that fact that if it's done smartly, your investiment continues to get smaller and smaller for each additional game targetted for those platforms. Obviously, as I previously stated, there is a cost to each new platform (which you too pointed out), but that can be spread across several titles.
I am not contending that Linux alone can support a large game development effort. I am contending that Linux/Mac can be had, if done smartly, for a small investiment with a reasonable and justifiable return, if smartly approached on the front end.

/. is a very tiny, tiny part of my life. No matter how much you wrongly troll-mod my posts and stalk me on line...my life is damn good. And at the end of the day, my life encompasses far more than a chair a keyboard. I hope you can one day say the same.
One last little tidbit...
It's obvious you're crying out for help. Have you considered talking to someone like a professional? Chances are your parents are not in the picture...but seriously...try to make a new friend and see if your life doesn't feel so empty.
Merry Christmas!
Add this to the fact that a lot of people still don't think of Novell as an open source company, but rather a company that has some open source products.
.com crash and still don't want their infrastructure investiment to follow.
Ironically, from a business perspective, that's a selling point! Most businesses don't want to be in the zealot cross fire. So finding a low cost solution from a credible company which just received a major cash infusion from a well known company, which is not just some open source company, is nothing but goodness. A lot of people still remember the
From your perspective that may sound like a reason to open the cannon ports but for most businesses, this is at least a supporting reason to open their wallets.
What we know:
Environmental factors influence the development of humans - especially during early development.
Fair enough. I can agree to disagree here.
