  1. Re:iirc on Wolfram Alpha Rekindles Campus Math Tool Debate · · Score: 1

I got hooked on Maple, not for its ability to do my homework, which it could have done, but for its ability to graph and illustrate and help me understand the problems better.

Deja vu here; I used Wolfram Alpha to study calculus and I had a final exam on it this morning.

In terms of a study tool, it was invaluable. I always try to do a question by myself first, but instead of writing MATLAB/python to sum a series to infinity, I can check my answer quickly in Wolfram. Same goes for limits, sequences, integrals, differential equations, etc. Knowing that lim n-> inf. ((n+1)/n)^n = e is not much use unless you actually understand what is going on; that is where the marks come from.

Oh and we were not allowed to use calculators (this is the top university in the state).

According to wackypedia, FTTP is usually FTTH (not FTTN). Also, from what I have read on the various news articles about this, the network will be regulated to hell and back so the company that owns it will not provide retail services on the network, just wholesale. Seems like a pretty good idea to me ?

Speaking of a can of worms, what about authenticity? What happens if someone carefully photoshops an image and sends it? You can usually tell by someone's voice if they are joking around, but an image would make it much harder to tell.

I'm no expert, but what about a hash of a hash? You could hash to get some long string that would be easily crackable in itself, but if this long string was again hashed, would it not become magnitudes more difficult to break?

Another factor in this censorship could be that the average Joe cannot easily find "bad" websites. Google, for example, censors results in China. Shameless self-plug aside, you can see the results of this here: http://penjuin.tumblr.com/post/29888352/chinese-internet-censorship-is-not-limited-to-just

I'm pretty sure that table salt is sodium chloride. Also, I'm fairly sure that you are eating potassium chloride and not potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate is an aphrodisiac ;).
