Another sugestion here. You can get the most basic version of XSI for less than $500 (or even less than $200 if you're a student), most of the modelling tools are there plus you'll get a few animation tools that you won't get with a modeller only app, plus you have one of the best free trial versions there is.

I've personally tried 3D Studio Max, Maya (taking a maya course now), XSI and Houdini (out of the "big boys", that is), and I found XSI to have the best poly/subdivs modelling tools, and of the free trial versions of all these the most unobstrusive ones are Houdini and XSI, so you can even try it with no problems for as long as you can (actually when learning those I forgot I was using a trial)

Also I've found that bullets in the text writting program are not as intuitive as word in some times, like trying to make bullets leave a blank line between two bulleted lines... in word after one or two times I manually add a blank line it automatically adds them between the rest of the bulleted lines.. then again probably that's because of me being a extremely casual user of OO (once or twice a week, at most) and using word for a living about 5 years ago.

From the distance to Coruscant it would be affected by its gravity. Satellites and the space shuttle are still affected by earth's gravity, but they stay there (and have no gravity inside) because they're going around the planet so fast that the centrifugal force (sp?) counters the gravitational pull. When it's time to reentry, they just slow down so that gravity starts to pull them back, then hit the air, which slows them down even more.

  19. Re:Not that bad... on Bush Signs Law Targeting P2P Pirates · · Score: 1
Depends on how hard you have to work to "localize" a movie. In Spain, for example, all movies are dubbed in spanish (which can take a while), here in Venezuela "kids" or "family" movies are dubbed, the rest subbed to spanish. Plus there's also the paperwork needed (permits, watching the movies to give the local censure rating, registering the movies with the local authorities, and so on). Also the good timing to make a movie do better. Finding Nemo, for example, IIRC was released in the US in the summer vacations time. In Spain, though, they missed it, so it would be released when the kids were in school, so it wouldn't do as good, so they kept it until the holiday season

Lately I've seen more and more movies that are released on the same day (or with a couple of days of difference) all over the world, though... :)

Depends on where you are. In latinamerica (for example, I bet it's the same in europe) we have a latinamerican version of Fox, WB, and few other channels that leave an empty "ad" space, so that the cable TV companies put their own localized ads (so that in argentina you see argentinan ads, in Venezuela venezuelan ads and so on... and in my case where the company I subscribe to operates in several countries, they put a little "this ad is only valid for X country" sign in the botton). At least in that case the cable TV company is the one that receives the revenue. The network usually puts a sign before those spaces warning that those ads weren't put there by them.

  25. Re:Door of no return? on Hollywood Looks to BitTorrent for Distribution · · Score: 2, Interesting
I know that for movies/shorts to be eligible for an oscar nomination they must be premiered on the big screen first (or at least that's how it used to be), so in the animated shorts it automatically would disqualify anything that was shown first on the internet.

Personally I'd like this, but I don't think I'd make much use of it... I like DVDs as they are (I'd welcome lower prices, of course), and the ones I buy I mostly buy for the extras, and personally there are lots of movies (specially the ones with lots of CGI) that I always prefer to watch first in the theater.

My take on this is that it'll go like it's going with music now, as you say, some movies (specially niche ones) will find this method of distribution better, but I don't think it'll be too succesful on a mainstream level because I'd bet most people will just like to watch movies in a simple way (plug DVD, hit play or go to the theater), and won't want to bother with TV outs, playing on a computer and the like. Music (itunes, for example) has had success mainly because there's no alternative to MP3 players when you want to listen to music and have so much to select from on a portable player, and buying music off an online store isn't any harder than ripping a CD and copy to the player that would be the only other (legal) alternative.
