A gamma-ray burst will not destroy all human life. Especially one that is this short. Gamma rays don't exactly go easily though 14000km of rock, do they?
There is always someone at the other end of the earth. Human race would survive.
The point about "Great Extinctions" is that a sizeable portion of species suddenly disappears. *We* (Man) are causing this right now to most multicellular species on the planet!! No need for a gamma-burst.
Seeded swarming (aka Bittorrent) is the future... why force individuals to connect and try 20 different mirrors, when all mirrors can connect to one central tracker, and everyone connected to the tracker can swarm stream files not only from mirrors, but also from other users downloading files;)
BT is not very good (ie. kind of useless) for most of the packages in Debian. Most packages are less than 500kB. Very few run more than a few megs.
If you want to use BT to download Sarge (hopefully before Woody turns 3 years old), you'll be able to get them here,
Debian will also release on DVDs (I think it will have 1x and 2x density disks) so you don't have to download so many images.
After Sarge releases and the torrent gets on slashdot, that is when BT is best. BT for `apt-get upgrade`, well, not so great.
PS. For apt-get, use your local mirror http://www.debian.org/mirrors/. Please, all of you should not be using the main http.us.debian.org mirrors:) Most secondary mirrors are just an hour or two behind primaries. Many are listed as secondaries just because they only host a limited architecture set (eg. only i386 and powerpc).
1. Debian is not a company. 2. Debian has changed its release architectures after Sarge so that Etch is not slowed down by unknown, exotic and/or obsolete architectures. 3. Sarge is not ready NOW because of the large number of architectures. ARM has only 2 auto-builders now and hasn't even compiled the release of glibc that has to go into Sarge. After it finishes compiling, the archive will be frozen.
Everyone can start their own little distributions here and there, usually leaching off of distributions like Debian. They find a limited niche market and people start talking about "Debian dying". Well, I think we had that discussion before Woody as well.
Debian has a very large number of packeges available for it. As of right now, Sid has over 16600 packages. Distributions like Ubuntu do not maintain these packages. They are just managing the core (base) and a few other packages.
Anyway, release cycles every 3 or 6 months are not necessarly good. People using Debian want stability. Why do people on slashdot bitch about MS dropping support for NT or 98, yet they complain that Debian stable is 3 years old! Huh?
Woody ships with a 2.4.18 kernel. This kernel does not support SATA. Woody does not support 2.6.x kernels with module support out of the box. But you can install kernel 2.6 on woody. You can run woody on a SATA only system (can't install it from CDs though). Can you install NT4 or Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or even XP out of the box on a SATA only system? My latest, greatest XP installation does NOT detect my SATA chipset. I mean, WTF?
Anyway, as soon as Sarge ships, people will start trolling that it does not support PCE-48X or their modem or something.
People wanting RHEL software stability without the pricetag and still want to have security support would be using Woody for the last 3 years. I am using Woody on a number of machines. I don't have to worry about upgrades with unexpected bugs. I don't have to worry about sudden ABI changes or compiler changes or kernel changes or GUI changes or coputeguration changes or... Many users prefer to use older software as opposed to constantly trying to re-learn some user interface just because someone thinks they need latest-greatest every 3-6 months.
So, why again is Slashdot population (I guess you can it that) complaining about Woody being stable less than 3 years, yet when it comes to MS, well, they release NT when? I think it came with IE 2!! And now that they drop support, people complain left and right about the need to upgrade..
Why are people here so hypocritical? You can run Sid with latest, greatest if you want. You can get latest Sarge installer here: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ There are many people that will be running Woody months *after* Sarge gets released.
Supervolcano is not a mass extinction event. An asteriod, ok. Pandemic? Not even close.
Humans will not go extinct on this planet thanks to any of these. The most likely cause of our extinction is us driving ourselves to extinction. Heck, we are doing a pretty good job at it as it is. *We* are the cause of the current mass extinction. Virtually all large animals on the planet are either on the verge of or rather close to being extinct. There are thousands of speciec of plants going extinct everyday (maybe one of those had a cure for cancer, but I guess a road/beef/mine/whatever is more important).
Anyway, space is not an answer (ie. it is not the Star Trek cosmos out there). Our bodies are adapted to this planet. It is extremely unlikely we will be able to travel to other planets on-mass during the next few hundred years.
Personally I am just waiting for the US to announce that some such alliance poses a threat to their security and takes military action to protect their economy
Insightful? I would say this qualifies as The Dump Comment Of The Week(TM).
The fluoride ion readily penetrates the skin causing destruction of deep tissue layers and even bone.
I would not have used HF acid, ever. This is especially true for some stupid lab. Safer acids should always be used like HCl, or even better, H2SO4 since you can smell that one:)
If you spill it on yourself, flush the are with A LOT of water. Water works best to dissolve virtually any common acids.
All fluorides are nasty. Yes, this includes Teflon (CF2-CF2) which kills hundreds of pet birds each year. Also, if it kills birds, it probably has some nasty effects on us http://tuberose.com/Teflon.html
The question is where to go now? My preference would be GNU Arch, as it's more decentralized. But it may not be ready for this heavy a use, and I am hardly an expert in revision control.
I have been using GNU Arch for a while now, and it seems to be ready for things like Linux (OS and source). What GNU Arch is not ready for is MS Windows thanks to its extensive usage of hard links in the version library as well as very long internal path names. None of these are problems when running under Linux.
I mean, cmon, how much work do you HONESTLY have to do except keep the phone line open and record the itsy bitsy data stream. What could be costing $4 mil?
One cannot argue numbers, right? The fiscal situation under Trudeau was utter crap, the Conservatives DID NOT help at all. They did not fix the fiscal problems. They mainteined the unsustainable status-quo funding levels.
"The Mulroney government spent about as much as it took in as revenue. The high deficits were cause by the high cost of servicing the debt built up by, wait for it, the Liberals.".
The debt was built up by the conservatives AFTER Trudeau. All conservatives did was spend, spend, spend.
Canada's total debt load (the accumulation of all past deficits and surpluses since Confederation) had grown from $20 billion in 1971 to over $545 billion in 1995.http://142.206.72.67/03/03a/03a_005d_e.htm
Mulroney's days account for debt. increase from about 150 billion to over 500 billion! He could have stopped the debt. from going over 200 billion if he did what Liberals (Chretien + Martin) have done after him. He chose to do nothing.
Conservative is not a party or a label but how you spend money. Today's Liberals are much more conservative than Mulroney ever was (and much more so than what the current so called "conservatives" are proposing with their 70 billion increase in gov't spending). As long as taxes do not go up and debt. keeps getting payed down, then we have a good, conservative government.
Although it is possible to sniff packets from wired LANs, you need much better equipment and closer distances than wireless. Additional aluminum shielding for all wires and electronics helps a lot to cut down on any sniffing. Using IPSec is even better.
One great advantage of wired over wireless is that it is impossible to break into the network if you don't have access to the wire.
Liberal party and may explain their ability to out-campaign the Conservatives
You think this is the reason why Liberals keep winning elections?
Liberals win elections because they at least are a semi-good government for Canada. We had a balanced/surplus budget for 8 years in a row now. Canada's national debt is down to about 550 billion (50% GDP) and dropping. US, with their "conservative" government, the federal debt is closer to 7.5 trillion (75% GDP) and growing fast.
To me, balanced budget/surpluses, taxes that are not going up and a steady economy mean a good government. If there is corruption, then those people need to be brought to justice. Period.
Anyway, under the last conservative governemnt, we ended up with
More spending
Higher personal taxes
Exploding inflation (18%)
High unemployment
7% national sales tax (GST)
5+% GDP deficit per year (50+ billion/year)
almost sold our most precious resource abroad - water
The only good thing I can remember the conservatives brought in was NAFTA.
Oh, and let's not forget about the kickbacks Malroney got over Airbus, and then some more for suing the gov't for libel. Oh wait, Malroney is innocent - it is only the liberals that can be corrupted, right?
All governments will have members that will funnel money. It is up to the judiciary to bring those few to justice. But this is no excuse to bring down a good government in favour of some Republican-wanna-bes fanatics (no offence or anything:).
It is an invetigation! The court can ban publication for X amount of time. This is done all the time in sensitive investigations.
If you want to talk about Orwell's future, start taking about being sent to jail based on "classified information". This is happening right now in Canada, US and other coutries (Iran, North Korea, Syria, etc..).
Make a view out of the stored procedure? Then you put the necessary code in the database to update/insert into that view.
Rails assumes that each model is one table. In the database, the table can also be a view, but you have to add capabilities in the database to update/insert into that view if you want that functionality.
Mappings should be done in the databases - that's what they are there for.
Lots of people save money in the US. Who's hard-earned money are you spending when you buy your house, car, education, and anything else you borrow for?
When I borrow, then I'm spending someone else's money and my future income. But I can default on that loan!
This is NOT saving money. Savings are when you have a liquid asset like cash, gold, stocks, bonds. Property is not a liquid asset. And loans are liabilities, NOT savings!!
In other coutries, like Japan, people actually save money. It is not uncommon for people to buy a car with cash. Heck, people can buy a house with cash. That is saving money.
When Japan's economy tanked, the situation is not catastophic. All that happens is people can lose money (purchasing power) in the inflation period.
In the US, the opposite is true. People buy everything with loans. What is most dangerous are 90+% financing of homes. If the housing market collapses thanks to high inflation thanks to collapsing US dolar thanks to trade deficit (see how deficits hurt the economy?), the mortages will be worth more than the property!! This can be catasrophic (banks going bankrupt!) which will bring down the economy into a depression much, much worse than in the 1930s (back then people didn't borrow money like they do now so it wasn't that bad:)
If the US doesn't improve its deficit situation (trade and fiscal), this collapse of the US economy can happen sooner rather than later. As soon as banks around the world start dumping US$ in favour of the EUR.
Balanced Budget. Is this some magic noone understands anymore? It is *irrelevent* if you spend money as long as you take in as much as you spend. Period.
It is irrelevent if you think Bush spends less than would Kerry if Kerry would have a balanced budget.
The current deficits are >5% of GDP. This is insane. Compound that with the fact that no one saves any money in the US and you have a recipie for disaster.
Read the report. "The Sellafield nuclear installation in north-west England produces vital energy to the people of the United Kingdom. It also produces weapons grade material needed for the production of nuclear weapons."
Any reactor that produces Pu is *unsafe*. Those are fast nutron reactors and are inherently unstable. Hell, these are essentially big nukes in a very slow state of exploding.
In CANDU reactors the fuel doesn't need to be enriched. Also, it breeds its own fuel (U238->Pu239). The reactors also are capable of disposing weapon grade nuclear materials (Pu and U). Natural U cannot explode - it has to be enriched.. There is just not enough U235 in it.
Most "energy reactors" are actually there to make nukes! I think CANDU are the only design currently in operation that had no nuclear weapon agenda. CANDU eats nuclear weapons for breakfast - it doesn't create them like fast nutron reactors (the ones that use Sodium metal or light water as moderators).
There is always someone at the other end of the earth. Human race would survive.
The point about "Great Extinctions" is that a sizeable portion of species suddenly disappears. *We* (Man) are causing this right now to most multicellular species on the planet!! No need for a gamma-burst.
I don't know, how much does it cost getting fired for posting on slashdot during work hours, Bob?

Integrated still means it is on the PCI bus. In most PCs today there still is ISA bus, though mostly for things like onboard sensors and the line.

No. The shuttle that blew up was Challenger in 1986. It was due to a faulty O-ring.
Are they going to keep a second crew as well, on standby to take over the mission? If so,..
No. RTFA.
Yeah! Touch the chasis, it zaps you and reboots the box :)

Maybe access to DSN (URL:http://deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/dsn/) and other radio telescopes so you can get your bitsy data stream?
You can break into wireless networks and use them for your own purposes. This is completely different from HTTPS.
The entire point of the weakness of wireless is that people should consider it a hostile network, just like the Internet. Nothing more, nothing less.
