They've built one of these things, flown it around and measured its fuel consumption.
No you say?
Then all there are artists' renderings of speculative aircraft that on some computer models appear to perform in the manner stated.
Nothing to see here, move along.
I initially thought the article was saying google was going to answer questions its users had about its service like, why is Gmail down and when will it be up. Or why can't I turn off threading in Gmail? Or why does the gmail address book look like a refugee form 1998? Just a few questions I'd like answered directly as a Google Apps premium user.
Its in gconf. To change it do the following:
ATL-f2 gconf-editor to open gconf-editor
Navigate to:/apps/metacity/general/button_layout
edit text to put : in front of string (instead of at end) if you just want the tools moved to the right.
if you want the tools to be rearranged like they used to be the string should read:minimize, maximize, close
Pretty easy fix, but annoying. You also will have to do this each time the themes package is updated. Changing themes will not solve this problem, but this gconf edit will.

Computers, cell phones and other network connected devices are a fact of life. They will be come more ubiquitous and more integrated into our lives than they are now. Academia needs to adapt and learn to deal with them not ban them. If students can't discipline themselves to pay attention in class despite the distraction, they deserve to fail. If instructors can't motivate their students to learn despite the distraction, they do not deserve to teach.

...the iPhone OS and OSX will merge (OS-XI) and the MacBook and the iPad form factors will merge. In the future all Macs will look like the iPad, they will all run Apple manufactured chips, and the only content and programs they will run will be from an Apple app store. Steve will then have realized his dream of being able to take a cut of everything that happens on an Apple device. And it will be a consumers choice to be alright about this or not. I'll probably be sort of alright with it on a (jailbroken) phone, but not on my main computing device.
The current internet installed base infrastructure that would need to be ripped out and replaced is so large that this kind of redesign will never happen. Change has to come in incremental steps, each with a significant, well identified payback. What's technically possible does not matter nearly as much as whether change will make or save money.
...because I prefer the convenience of electronic purchasing (vs. going to the store or ordering on line and waiting for delivery) and reading (my books are on my iPhone and always with me). I have never pirated a book either electronically or with a copy machine. If authors wish to sell to me they had better have their books in electronic format. I suspect I am not alone.

Seriously, most of the time I'm on the web I'm in Gmail or on a forum. Spell check is not a luxury, its a necessity. Speed and Acid 3 compliance do not keep me using Firefox, spell check, and adblock do.
What is it about Mersenne Primes that makes finding a new one worth $100k? Is there an intrinsic value to the number or is it just one of those things that are so hard to do, like running a world's record hundred meters, that the effort and talent to do it merits a rewarded?
ATT offered users an unlimited data plan, no wait, they required one with an iPhone. Now the problems with ATT's network are the fault of those selfish users who took ATT's offer seriously. Give me a break. ATT is rolling in money from iPhone, they should use it to build out their network.
For $36/head you get 1gig of data storage vs. Google at $50/head gets you 25gig of storage. I have no idea how Notes has survived as long as it has. Crap hardly begins to either the notes client or server.

Downloaded the latest Chrome Beta (3.0.195.4), installed AdSweep, failed to be impressed. AdSweep loads ads the first time you visit a page in a session then erases them, highly annoying.
The biggest problem I had was that I failed to notice any speed difference between Chrome and Firefox 3.5.2 on the sites I visit. If anything my non-scientific observation was that with AdSweep loaded, Chrome was significantly slower than Firefox.
Some of you are saying: so don't use it, media monkey or some other program manages it just as well. That may be true, but its not the whole story. I'm talking about syncing with other apps not just with the iPod functionality in iPhone. What about syncing my calendar, or my contacts? Or syncing an application that reads and writes office documents? And look I've tried a bunch of stuff Media Monkey, Double Twist etc, and all of them either require some other BS (DT requires an account with them, it won't just run locally, MM actually requires an install of iTunes for the driver, DT may too). And I still have to have iTunes to back up my apps and data.
Additionally, nothing is seamless because APL tries to lock everything out, everything is going through some back door, its a kludge. Instead of one application to worry about I have two. APL needs to publish an interface and let people write to it for syncing, tune management, even sales of apps. Why couldn't the iTunes store let other apps access their content?

That's stupid. But, give us an address book in Thunderbird that will sync seamlessly with Gmail and I'd be deliriously happy.
Either buy a proprietary system or pay to do it yourself. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
