that with every year, commercial game development is becoming more and more out of reach of smaller/indie studios. The expectations are being raised with every Doom3 and HL2 that comes out. Nowadays, the models have to be on par with movie-quality standards, the sound has to be done in a professional studio and etc. Gone are the days when a small studio could write a game and hit it big in the industry. Mods seem to be the only way the little people could make themselves known, and even those have to be on par with the modded game (level are not designed from blocks anymore, they are their own complex 3d models). And eventhough i drool everytime i see a new screenshot of HL2/Doom3 and see the new ATI demos, I also long for the days when people got excited by 16x16 pixel characters and 8 bit sound.

  13. Distribute deps on Building A Better Package Manager · · Score: 1

Ok, what I never understood with binary packages is why not include all the precompiled dependencies right there in the package, install them all into the same directory and have them take priority over the ones in the system, like in windows. Am I missing something that makes Linux unable to do that? (Aside from the obvious bloat of such practices).

  14. Um.. hello? on Requiem For The Record Store · · Score: 1

Nice! I haven't checked tried it out yet, but if its speed is comparable to VMWare, then it's yet another step towards Windipendence. I use Linux 80% of the time, but I find myself returning to Windows for two things. 3dsMAX and Adobe stuff. The latest versions of either of which don't run in WINE, unfortunately enough. I think I'll give Bochs a try.

  18. What many people don't realize... on Trying Your Hand at Level Design? · · Score: 1

... is that the levels in today's games are not made out of blocks and spheres anymore. Today's game level designers have to be 3D artists first, and have to be responsible for modelling subtle level details as much as building architectually believable buildings. Look at HL2 or UT2k3's level design. THere are hundreds of well modeled objects that make up the level. A level designer that made blocky levels for HalfLife or UT1 would be at a loss in the age where most levels are carefully modeled in Maya or Max and then exported into the game's format.
