Lets see a goofy bar at the bottom of your screen that acts as a terrible task manager (OSX). I mach kernel and freebsd kernel combined to give extra slow performance(OSX)
Or spyware, memory hogging anti-virus software and overall fisher price ugliness with an evil registry(Windows)
I don't know which one is worse, secure or insecure; however steve jobs has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the anti-christ (I think david hasselhoff is a better candidate though).
but what do I know I compile all my software like a lunatic...I have tried to switch from gentoo, but they put something in my water...I enjoy it too much..
Although it was touched on a little above, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to rant about ATI. ATI does not support more than 2-3 generations of cards. Their driver development quickly stops and their Catalyst drivers are ridiculously huge.
On the linux side of things their support is so freaking lame it is ridiculous. Reverse engineered open source drivers are 10X better than drivers developed by ATI. ATI is pathetic and any company that releases such terrible software in their name does not have very high standards and cannot be trusted. I had a radeon 8500 and I will never recommend or waste my money on such pathetic ATI junk again.
You didn't argue much of anything in your post. First off Ubuntu is not an end-to-end solution as you describe and frankly I am unimpressed with it on a desktop. Ubuntu breaks many functional parts of a desktop including cups web interface and several other applications because of security ignorance.
I have been using linux since Redhat 6.2 and I have tried almost every reasonable size distro under the sun. Fedora at least gives the user a desktop that can be used for development, used in a corporate environment and attempts to push the envelope for linux software.
If you have ever used a laptop with Ubuntu you will see how inflexible Ubuntu is. My roommate had to copy and paste a wireless key into Ubuntus wireless config every time he restarted his computer. Even in Ubuntu 6.06, which was released long after FC 5, networking support still is inflexible. If you are only worried about installation ease, you do not use linux on a regular basis and therefore can not say you are a user. Ubuntu may recognize your wireless card, but it doesn't offer out of the box wpa for several cards that support it. Fedora Core 5 uses Network Manager, a real wireless solution that can manage several profiles and offers a flexible solution.
Ubuntu get way too much credit and it even looks terrible out of the box. It reminds me of going to the bathroom after a long friday night...that is thinking of the user
I am not ranting particularly at you, but rather everyone that professes Ubuntu is something special. It is simply easy to install and crappy to use.
I love how the Chinese innovate. Corporate espionage, reverse engineering and overall IP infringement...Skype should have patented its technology, but it's not like the Chinese respect IP anyway.
I am as big of a Linux finatic as the next slashdotter, but I am having a hard time understanding the basis for the magnitude of this fine. I am a firm believer that Microsoft has its monopoly because Microsoft Office has consistently been the most robust office package on the market. I have to run VMWare at home just because I can't use another office product.
However, the information that the EU demands seems to be nothing more than an extortion attempt. Samba has worked flawlessly with Microsoft's SMB implementation for years, and I can add linux to a windows domain, authenticate agains a Microsoft ADS and plugin to Microsft Exchange server with Evolution. So what is the real issue, all of these functions have been created without taking anything from Microsoft, but rather from innovation from the Linux community.
I am not going to debate whether or not Microsoft has used its market share for good or ill, but I don't see how it much affects any other operating system. Corporations have always commanded the popular OS and companies choose the OS on what platform will make the employees the most efficient. Microsoft Office is still unreplaceable and it is the main anchor to the Windows platform. Office 2007 is one of the best software products I have used to date, so I don't see that going away. It will be the slow detereriation of the desktop that erodes the grip of Windows, not litigation from governments over non-existent issues
At least this is my take. If I had a car that controlled 90% of the market, would it be fair to make me compete without seats or a stereo? Who even cares, linux and apple technologies and innovations are maturing and besting such commodity apps. such as media players, web browsers, picture managers, etc.
This is what I was explaining to my co-workers today. Slashdot is still a "geek" website with lots of people who have a clue. Plus its a place where hilarious fights over technology happen all the time. The slashdot posts are full of "experts" and many times I learn from the posters.
Digg has a lot of crap all over the front page all the time. I don't care about most of it and don't enjoy sifting through it. The discussions generally suck and most of the comments seem to be from 14 years olds.
They both have their benefits, I just think Slashdot has a different community. Digg is just a crapshoot in a lot of ways.
I work at Johnson & Johnson 110,000+ employees we use Microsoft Exchange. However, the infrastructure is spread out among several companies. We still haven't upgraded to 2003, but the service is pretty reliable.
Exchange + Outlook is the best combo going for the enterprise.
Can you say YAY to Google adds as they index all of the words in your documents. Maybe they can incorporate a banner at the top of the program, kinda like Opera. Oh boy, that would be fantastic.
I don't think I want Google knowing everything about me, including my personal literature.
I have ben using Linux solely for three or four years. For a long time I thought it was the greatest thing, until I started switching people. First I learned around a dozen different distributions and then had to learn all of their little quarks. Friends expected me their "guru" to do the impossible and make something work all the time. This wasted so much of my time it isn't even funny. I like linux but the more it grows the more annoying it becomes because I have begun to support way too many people. I many times wish people just stuck with Windows so I didn't have to solve their problems all the time.
I don't know, Linux is fun, but it should be left to the enthusiast, supporting friends for the cause gets overwhelming.
If I were China I would truly distrust the west especially since I was benefitting of the United States alone by a $160 Billion dollar trade deficit. I would say Chinese dumping policy, lack of IP protection and human rights violations to their own citizens should be enough for the west not to trust them at all. It's amazing what cheap labor, lack of choice and a pegged currency can do to help a country exploit the worlds industry.
my 2cents
OK. I'm going to walk down your street, and I want you to pay me $5 every time you look at me. Some people think I'm good looking, so I'm gonna try to cash in on it. If you don't want to pay, just don't look - if you don't want to pay for something, you shouldn't take it anyway, for free, right?
This is just a bad analogy, if you are particularly beautiful, it is not the same as investing in a TV series, or studio time for a song, your individual time and talent for creating art. Now, due to the very obsolete distribution or lack of distribution in terms of TV series especially the cost issues are not always in line. However, not paying for music, cinema and art is simply stating that someone's hard work and investment isn't worth anything to you. However, if this was the case you wouldn't go out of your way to infringe upon their creation. You, however, are offering nothing to the world by displaying yourself walking through the street. Plus you are forcing your presence upon others who may not wish to see you, so it is definitely not the same is actively seeking out media and not supporting its creators.
Their is a physicological separation from the artist and director, from the consumer, because you are buying media an abstraction from the producer. I am not going to enter a debate on slashdot especially with narrowminded individuals who don't understand that infringing upon copyrights although just bits of data were painstakingly created by someone trying to support themselves and their families. It is the same as someone stealing a hand crafted couch from you if you are a carpenter. It is your contribution to the society, which in turn allows you to live.
In regards to the Music Industry, it is important that record sales for the large labels have dropped off, because the market will begin to correct itself in order to be more competitive. However, the minority of music is put out by the RIAA artists, and most musicians are not living the lives shown on MTV cribs. It is important to recognize and appreciate the art that people dedicate their lives to prefecting so we as end user can enjoy them.
Mr. 1337 man, woho apache, samba, squid, X11...all extremely hard to set up. Actually in my distro of choice, I too use a terminal emulator to change the configure scripts, however, i don't use that poopy xterm in order to do it. Xterm although seemingly featureless is one of the most bloated terminal emulators available for linux/unix. Now, haha, what to you use xfmanager, it is a far cry from konqueror and it is not nearly as efficient nor feature filled for daily use. Now xfce, i have used it and I like it to an extent, but there is a point in your life when you actually want to get things done in an efficient and convenient way. Honestly, your not 1337 because you do everything on the command line, and I can do the same, however many applications are much more powerful and useful when complimented with thought out uis. It appears you must agree though, xfce isn't necessarily that minimalistic which means you must like some of the amenities that come with ui programs.
I am going to assume you really don't know anything about the core of KDE. This assumption must be made, because KDE is by far the least bloated out of all the DE's in our world today. If you run KDEbase it is extremely fast, efficiently uses memory and provides the most sophisticated file manager on the planet. Now different distributions handle KDE packages differently and might install several packages that aren't necessary to the KDE core, but their is nothing stopping you from only installing what you want. Debian and Gentoo are both examples of distros that show you the true power of KDE. Konqueror btw makes firefox look like a sumo wrestler walking up mt. everest.
But I assume you are a troll, but I couldn't help myself.
joe
GTK developers and KDE developers clashing ideologies!!! I happend to use solely Konqueror and although many find it hard to configure, once you spend five minutes to get used to the more complex options konq indeed provides a very reliable, fast and clean browsing abilities. Maybe Firefox dev. should rethink their memory management, I think users want a browser that doesn't use all their memory and doesn't take forever to load. That is the biggest feature firefox has, and maybe it is due to slipshod coding. However, its apples and oranges really each browser has it perks and downfalls, but apple safari, konqueror and firefox aside from evangelist views all are solid browsers.
Joe
Who uses firefox and then complains about memory usage. Firefox is a memory hog all by itself, 5,000k is negligible.
What was the whistling all about, I couldn't make it through the video it was so grating.
Caning is in place for this boy.

Common Sense is hard to come by, welcome to Slashdot.

LMAO, this was a great break from studying for finals!!
Haha...that is hilarious, I guess I should pay better attention. Thanks for pointing out my error. Joe
I just installed IE 7 Beta 2 from the Microsoft Website and using the test provided here:
t ml
http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/reference.h
IE 7 passed the test with flying colors. The only browser that does this good is Konqueror.

You just need to select index files in XP and it will be much faster. It just isn't the default.
