Copyright law is needed by some industires in order to justify the massive R&D costs. Most industries however, don't need the extremely lengthy "Life of the author plus 70 years" here in the United States and most free nations. For industries such as software, the technology is continually changing and the development costs are extremely significant, asside from salaries. So companies can make large profits of the technology and after 4 or 5 years the technology is almost irrelevant anyway and should be released into the public domain, so technology can continue to advance without burden. So I would suggest four yesrs.

I am not opposed to Microsoft technologies, and if "Magneto" is indeed a superior mobile product I would contemplate owning a smart phone that used the OS. However, I know that the functions of the phone will most likely be rather useless to me because Microsoft fails to recognize that not everyone is using Windows.
This is where Microsoft must begin to support Linux if they want other product lines to be able to succeed. I think their is a misconception that everyone who uses Linux would never use any Microsoft product, but I believe that the situation is quite contrary and that many Linux users simply want the best technology and operating system wise Linux can be the superior technology and most facets, especially to geeks.
Much of the outsourcing that used to go to India has now moved to the even cheaper land of China. China knows that a strategic alliance with India will only mean that India will further indebt itself into China. This alliance clearly reminds me of the alliance the World Trade Organization made with China during the Clinton Administration. China is opening its vast market to the United States. Yeah, accept only its job market and virtually no consumerism.
What is more disturbing is China gets all the benefits of a trading nation in the WTO by being a "most favored nation" but still meets very few requirements that the WTO forces member nations to follow.
As long as the yuan continues to be pegged against the dollar and artificially inflated and China is a controlled economy, the only nation which will win by trading with China is China. Unfortunately, for any free nation, Walmart's business strategy will continue to hurt most of the free worlds economy, by benefiting the upperclass and further eroding middle class work.

Why does an American Company have to be subjected to the fines and penalties of a foreign semi-socialistic union. I am not a Microsoft sympathizer, and I solely use linux, however, this is total conflict of interest.
One might say, you must play the rules of the European Union in order to sell your product in Europe, however, European companies would not allow such a sanction. This is simply a way for the EU to rake in a little extra money and show that it is more powerful than American Companies. If Microsoft is truly a monopoly (and I am not suggesting that it is not), it should be taken up in the United States, because it is a Corporation within the United States. This just seems so conflicted and anti-business. Remember, Microsoft still impacts the American Economy and the European Union does too. The European Union wants to further degrade the US dollar and establish itself as a superpower.
Wow, so much money, so much incentive. Honestly, I think Novell may get a little too much credit with what they have helped do with linux. I mean look at the contributions to the kernel mostly from OSDL, Redhat and IBM. What about Sun paying developers salaries for OO development. Meanwhile KDE developers make KDE much more memory efficient than Gnome for free and Novell profits. Novell simply is trying to get in the news with a prize instead of pumping a sufficient amount of money into either Desktop Environment.
Lets all fight over $3000!w00t.
It is impossible to stop the development of software against someones will. It may have to get developed under certain restrictions, but it is impossible to stop because of the inevitable communication through the internet. This is how software is so easily outsourced and it is the same reason development for linux cannot be stifled through litigation, but rather only through disinterest.
my take
The last time I check distributing goods which you don't own the rights to has nothing to do with the open source movement. The OSS movement is sharing resources which the party has full ownership over, however the distributing music is mostly distributing goods to which the user has no rights.
Is it me or do people compare everything to OSS in order to get their paper recognized. All publicity isn't good publicity. This is slanderous and furthermore hardly speaks of the economic impact of the OSS and distribution of music.

I can't stand articles that sympathize with the most repulsive people in our societies. Is someone forgetting how he messed up two little girls lives? ugh
because soon enough, we the citizens of the United States, will no longer be able to make our own decisions. We can leave it all up to our government, but whats new, we don't vote on sending our troops to war, we are relatively uninformed about what our government is doing, and our public officials are puppets to large corporations.
But why should I worry, our economy is doing great, gas prices are going through the roof, thousands of professional jobs are moving to asia and our middle class has be disseminating for thirty years. I think the government is doing a great thing, thank you Bush for putting oil first. If it wasn't for our protectionalist attitude maybe other countries wouldn't hate us so much, and maybe our soldiers could be mothers and fathers to their children.
Alternatively they used binary packages and had a working/fully functional system in around an hour. Or if you are lucky as I am, it doesn't seem to take very long when you have two 2800+ mps doing the work for you. Your right, there is a lot of laughing, because my Gentoo doesn't deteriorate after two days.
Dayton is what made Watson. It is one of the most innovative cities and spawned much of the technology that we had in this world. His ability to risk everything just for an idea is a Dayton trait, which has brought flight, electric starters, pop tabs, and thousands of other inventions that contribute to our modern day society. He may have not become a successful buisness person in Dayton, but the attitude very much shaped his personality.
The FBI agent also forgot to mention that as in Hackers, when you hack with a mac, cool greek symbols float around. Another perk of using such a proprietary machine.
