You'd be surprised how many businesses that run very well on Access databases. Unless they need industry standard performance and reliability, I'd say they could find uses for the database. Let's say vacation and work schedules, inventory and useful stuff like that. If he keeps his backups, he will have no problems even if this Filemaker program corrupts the database. (I've almost never used a Mac, but I know Access well enough) And yeah, an advice: keep a second backup off-site!

Linux is good only if your time is worthless. Sad but true. As a regular geek I like tweaking OS's but Linux takes the cake sometimes. I stay with Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS! Seems newer Linux kernels has dropped support for the SB600 south bridge (a very common ATI chip) as well. Therefore the newest versions of Slackware, CentOS, OpenSuse and Ubuntu does not recognize my hard disks. If nobody fixes that soon i am going to the store to buy Windows 7.

It's not as simple as 'it's a company just like the company that produces your toilet paper' and you know it. If they even had a grain of decency they would be perfectly able to sound the alarm. The thing is that, the profits involved with being yes-men clearly outweighs the risks. It's more like Ford threw in an 'Robbing The Bank' button that releases caltrops then gives you 10x horsepower, flame thrower and twin jet engines, as well as dispensing clean clothes with passports in them. These kind of companies are well beyond mom and pop private enterprises, they are gambling institutions using countries, property and people as chips. They should have a social responsibility that reflects the position they are in.

I had a couple of RiscOS fanatics for friends (i was in the commodore camp), and afaik they had a 2MB ROM to boot from, which included memory protected processes ('modules') and a configurable desktop environment, a taskbar/taskmanager hybrid as well as an assembler/BASIC editor/assembler and some other tools. Also grandparent must be trolling, since those OS'es was so incredibly small and uncomplicated that it should in fact be possible to write them with zero bugs whatsoever.

Doesn't matter if it's MS or Canonical, some people just want their OS to work 100% out of the box and not wait for future updates to fix it. If XP came out at SP2 level it would be totally different. Nobody pays for Ubuntu but still people don't like to be crash test dummies. Now that the mainstream starts to use Linux like we all wanted, it's up to the various distros to make the transition smooth and not 10 more years of testing before its stable enough . All I have is an online banking thing for which you need a physical key generator even if you know all the rest of the personal ID. To this day I have never used real information for email signups and other accounts. I keep all my important data stored safely locally (as in NOT a cloud/online storage service) on DVDs and in some cases I burn double backups in case one fails. Hard disks that are thrown away are securely wiped, and then smashed in the ground 2-3 times for good measure. It's nice to know that in case I for some reason I don't have internet, I won't really be affected. All my games and data is present. Even if you steal my wallet or cellphone and find my old disks, you won't get very far !
