    Your treating it as the Playstation 2 is a weak assed machine. It isn't. It will probably give most PCs a run for its money for a year or two after it comes out. And sony has previously said before that they want the Playstaton 2 to be much more than a game machine basically they see the system as a eventual replacement for entertainment as we know it. Its gonna do tons of things such as act as a webtv box, limited PVR functions (with the HD), viewable entertainment (DVD) as well as other things. They want the market to be split, because they want the machine to be seen as a replacement for most anything.

    That isn't possible with Mpeg-1. The max that it can take is 352x288. To do 720x576, you need at least Mpeg-2 or Mpeg-4.

    you may be using AMD chips and not even know about it. Since your chips come from 1981-83, then at least most of them came from the time when AMD was liscensed to make exact replicas of Intel chips (As was required from IBM when they chose Intel chips for the IBM PC.)

    also, I do remember back in the 386-486 days getting PCs that just stated that they had a x86 processor, and opening them up and finding out that I got a amd processor. Back then the brand didn't matter. Intel made that a issue when they started advertising in 1994

    Well, if you want proof. then just look at the benchmarks, and the overall chip design. You can find it if you just look for it on google or something.

    Also. If the world lived by your terms, then ford could say that all other cars arn't cars because they basically invented them. the same with IBM. they can say that todays PCs arn't PC because they invented them, even though todays PC are 100% compatible with the old IBM PCs

    not exactly. both Hyundai and VW did this to overcome people feelings that they are both makers of lemon cars.

    Both Hyundai are sufferers of disaster cars such as the Hyundai Pony (Excel) and certain years of the VW Bug. No matter if it was 10 years ago, or 30 years ago. people will look back and say see here, they make crap cars.

    This is just like people who refuse to by Compaq computers, or HP machines because at one point in time, they or someone else had major problems.

    If computer manufactures could, they would do this, but have you ever tried to find parts for a machine that is more than three years old? You'll pay just as much as a new machine. and all that will do is drive prices up because of manufactures stockpiling, and covering losses.

    Think about all of the people who tales everything that happens to their computers as a sign that its crapping out.

    I work on computers for a living. and we get alot of computers from places like Circuit City, and Best Buy from people who have no clue what is going on. Alot of the problems are reports that the mouse stops working (It needed to be cleaned, or replaced. or simply they are moving it around when the computer is busy) or like, 'I got a bad sector error when I ran scandisk. I want a new HD (even though the error only amounts to 1k lost on a 3.2gb disk)

    The point is that If you tell the people that you cant fix it, or that it is something that happens to computers. then they get all offensive and start calling channel whatever on you side, and your local consumer advocate and saying that they were ripped off.

    Imagine how people will then attempt to point to tiny things that are normal as a sign of a lemon PC. (it hung on shutdown, so its a lemon. I got a bad sector, so its a lemon. It wont read my old cds, so its bad) Before a goverment starts making laws about lemon PCs, they better take great care in noting what does and does not make a lemon PC.

    they halfed the cache, and forced the chip to run on 66mhz only. While back in the 300 and 400mhz days, the performance drop between 100mhz and 66mhz buses were only around 1% it can easily get as high as 10-15% over 600mhz.

    AGP was originally designed to lower the costs of video cards. The plan was have your video card use system memory as its buffer, and cache and storage, because at that time. SDRAM was very expensive.

    Think about it. back in 1996, a video card with 4 megs of memory was the equivilent of a 32 meg card, that is in that memory drove the price past the 200 dollar mark. AGP was supposed to make a 1 or 2 meg card perform almost as well as a 4 or 8 meg

    Actually, I remember reading on their site a few years ago, and they stated that the database from 1995-to 1998 were a couple of terabytes.

    For what I remember seeing a few months ago that what they were doing was converting the older database to a newer database that they created in 1999. Basically they are getting rid of the crosspostings, and redundant data that accumulated over the years.

    As for why they cant just gradually work their way back to 95' I really dont know. It would have been nice however. I didn't realize how much I depended on it until it was gone.

    The original Super Nintendo could display 256 colors at one time out of 32,768. however, people were able to trick it into displaying up to 512 at certain resolutions (I have forgotten which one)

    The Gameboy advance can do 512 colors out of 65,535. it can also achieve mode 7 graphics in the foreground as well as the background (the super could only do the background originally)

    People will find ways around it. Look at the gameboy color. It could only do 56, but they have came up with ways to display 4,000 colors with it (Alone in the Dark)

    Look at TwinVQ and AAQ, as well as other formats that have appeared since mp3. pretty much all of them were marqinally better than Mp3. but mp3 kept its corner on the market.

    mp3 is gonna be like VHS or NTSC television in the united states. Its gonna take years to get people to switch. even if the alternative is miles ahead of it in terms of quality and features. The people in the know will use it but not the general public, even if all existing players could play it somehow.

    They did promise to put plug and Play into NT back with NT4, they just ran out of time with it. Kind of like whistler. They planned for 2000 to be the universal OS, but they ran out of time, thus it was born.

    Microsoft originally planned to dump 16bit code all together with windows 98, but they then decided to try to incorporate it into win32 (to keep the people quiet when they figured out that old apps will no longer work) This is all that ME does, it finally incorporated most of dos into win32, where it can be controlled. Its not always there in the way, can be called and shutdown whenever required, and eventually will not bring down the OS when it crashes. (which whistler is supposed to bring)unfortunally, they had to kill off real mode for 16bit apps.

    Actually if you are still using real mode for some of your applications, your probably running hardware that couldn't run Me anyways. This wont run on a 486 anymore guys.

    I for one personally feel that if it took Intel this long and caused so much trouble going to .18 micron with the pentium III, how can they drop to .13 so quick to fight AMD?

    It also seems to be that if Intel did go to a 200mhz fsb, then AMD will be able to go to something higher very easily. Such as the end of this year when they go to a 266mhz fsb.

    Man, have you looked at some of the copywrights to some of the shows. The first season was done from 1991-93. You have to admit, those shows look great for that time. And I admit, the first season was pretty weak. The spent most of their time playing games, but the second season got alittle more serious, and the third season was great.

    Yes the dub for Evangelion sucks. I watched the dubbed with the subtitles, and was just appalled by how they changed words and context around to make everything sync up. It just made the entire show look and feel cheap. About the only dub thats ever been great is the ramna 1/2 series (for the most part)

    Trust me on this, WMP will only play Quicktime 2 and older. something which is pretty much worthless now. Apple really didn't change the standards from Quicktime 3 and 4. Actually Quicktime 3 can play most of Quicktime 4 files, But it will sometimes miss either the video portion, or the Audio portion of the file. If it will play both, it will run at a higher CPU usage. but thats another thread. WMP is a great program, but its heading for bloatville too when you look at the 7 beta. and when you think about it, most of what WMP uses is already running, so thats why it will always load up quicker, just like IE.

    They are, but not in the box. Sony took out the PCMCIA slot and put in a expansion port for the american version. the HD is alleged to go there, that is if they can get it small enough. they may also put it on firewire. Its supposed to be around 20-30 gigs too.

    As for the modem it will go through firewire or usb, and is supposed to be out a month or two later. they are thinking of making it similar to dreamcast where you get the modem and HD for free when you sign up for the service.

    Sure alot of people are gonna think that the Xbox is gonna be a lot better than the Playstation 2 because its faster, and has a few advantages than the PS2 such as memory and sound support but this isnt the whole story.

    The playstations 2 chips are specilized for games, the xbox, for spreadsheets. nuff said'.

    Playstations 2's Memory management is loads better than Xbox. just look at the original playstation, with its measly 2 megs of memory, it produced graphics that PCs with 8 and 12 megs of video memory couldn't.

    As for the games, pretty much everytime that a gaming system is released in Japan the games released with it are not all that impressive or good. The Japanese are more forgivin than us. They already know that the programmers are learning the system, so the games wont be all that stellar until 6 months down the road. Remember that most of the playstation 2 games created start to finish in 9 months. Most games take a year to a year and a half to complete.

    I urge people to look at the sony section of www.dailyradar.com and look at some of the second generation playstation 2 games such as madden 2001, and knockout kings. if the first games didn't impress you these will.

    Wrong DivX... This divx is a hack of the microsoft mpeg4 videostandard (Less CPU intensive) and Mp3. It results in over three hours of mpeg quality video on a cd, and near perfect DVD rips onto a single CD. To prevent confusion, people usually write it as this DivX ;-) The people who originally did it says that they did not know about the one your refering to.

    I only know of two programs that had problems with processors other than Intel, and that was because they wrote specific code saying basically that if it isn't a pentium II then don't run. Once that was disabled the program ran fine.

    You see, your just doing like everyone else does with AMD chips, if you have a problem, then you automatically blame the chip.

    The real deal with the problems with certain AGP cards and athlons and K6's are because the motherboard manufactures made the mistakes of putting cheap voltage regulators and did not ensure that the AGP port was getting the proper voltage at all times.

    Nvidia cards are real partial to their available voltage, if it drops or is too high at certain times it can crash the entire system just like that. the fixes that the drivers do basically turns off the AGP 2x functions of the card so that the voltage spikes don't effect the cards performance.

    This was with earlier boards, it isn't a issue now.

    Pretty much all chips made by corporations over the past few years have had some type of serial number. Ones that come to mind are PowerPC chips, some Motorola chips, A few AMD chips, as well as others. Intel just made the mistake of broadcasting it to the world.

    Your motherboard point is not valid. your putting the best athlon board (which just came out) against an ok pentium board which has been out for a few months.

    You can get athlon boards for around $120 bucks on pricewatch. and why are you quoting the cheapest and worst perfoming board available for the Pentium III?

    so if you look at it this way,

    athlon 700mhz $189
    FIC SD-11 $84

    PentiumIII 700 $373
    Soyo 6VBA133 $63

    and the athlon combo is still cheaper than just buying the Pentium III alone.

    If Ignorance was treated like cancer the world would be a better place.

    Windows dosn't care if you have two or more soundcards in your machine. It will only use one at a time. This way, you could use one for recording purposes only, and the other for playback, or any other way. Sort of like dual processors in 9x. It will only use one of them at a time.

    The great thing about Mountain Dew is it caffine quotient. 16oz of mountain Dew equals the same amount of a cup of coffee. It's the most powerful nationally sold cola (besides Jolt, which is double the caffine as coffee, and is not available everywhere.)

    Personally, I perfer Jolt, but due to where I'm located, its hard as hell to find; but nothing beats a SorBe Zen Blend. I live for that stuff!
