  1. Oh crap! on Synthetic Sebum Makes Slippery Sailboats · · Score: 1

They've banned tributyltin? We were supposed to haul out my Mom's boat last year. Snooze, you lose.

  2. I dunno... on Mainstream Press "Cringes" At Win7 Launch Parties · · Score: 1

I saw one for Windows 95 with Matthew Perry in it that I thought was quite good. Funny, since it was so much better than the actual product, but well done. Good script, story line, direction... It was like a half-hour show, IIRC. Every thing I've seen since has been pretty inept. Maybe since then they've found it more desirable to use FUD and abuse their monopoly position. Good example of the maxim "It never pays to over-estimate the intelligence of the consumer".

In my humble experience, (~125 MPH over Altamont Pass towards Livermore), when the winds are kicking up, the best policy is to go WOT. The gyroscopic effect of the wheels is increased, and the ride is much less scary than at 55.

This is the most logical proposal I've heard yet, aside from ignoring the damn pirates. Considering what dickheads the suits in the music biz are, however, I'm sure that "cooler heads will prevail."

I do hate that The People's Republic of California is on that list, but the law I want is to legalize secret taping of police officers. They pull some serious felony shit and laugh about it. Bastards.

  11. Re:Good? on Tolkien Trust Okays Hobbit Movie · · Score: 1

I found the extended DVD version of "The Fellowship OTR" to be more coherent and better-paced than any of the others. Reading the books pretty much ruined the movies for me, anyway. YMMV

Throughout these comments what I'm not seeing is a couple of issues touched on in TFA, that this is only one of many mid-ocean gyres, and that some of this plastic waste is leaching out endocrine disruptors. We don't yet know the extent of the damage we are causing with these chemicals, but it does not look very good.

I got a bunch of raised eyebrows when I had two four-gang electrical outlets (one from either leg of the house power) and an exhaust vent fan installed in one of my closets when we built our house. I wanted it for a server farm but couldn't convince anyone that I wasn't going to be farming something else.

At 37, this may be "last years model", and the fact that she "hasn't worked since" could have been a little bit mitigated by that. OTOH, the perp was a doorman, presumably large and tough. If he really had to retaliate for a drink splashed in his face, he did not need to smash a bottle in her face. Out here in The People's Republic of California, that would be prosecuted as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, causing grievous bodily harm, or some such. I'd have this guy locked up for a while if I was in charge. YMMV. Thirty days and probation is appropriate for a crime like, STEALING her bottle, and smashing it on the floor.

I have been noting this trend for thirty years already. The quality of our "Public Servants" went down the toilet in the '80s. The Peter Principle didn't cover the bit where everyone is HIRED above their level of competence. Supposedly this is a cyclic phenomenon, AFAIKT it is more of a one-way trend, like candy bar price/size.
