"Worms, as in the ones that ravage the net, are almost an entirely Microsoft phenomena" LOL, That's only because most of the computers on the net run windows.. Back in the day your statement would have been true if you replaced the word WIndows with "DNS" (or BIND). But hey, I guess since you use Linux you must know everything right? Thanks for posting the full article! So it's a BATCH FILE generator they are getting worked up about? LOL! Try running a search for "Virus Creation Laboratories" or "VCL", and you will see a tool that has been around since the EARLY 1990's that does a MUCH better job then a batch file creator. You can actually pick from a variety of languages and it will auto-generate the code. (is it really good to post this stuff on /. anyways? I shudder thinking of how many script kiddies are probably reading this!). A batch file Trojan, btw, is NOT a computer virus.

The sky isn't falling, and any virus detector can pick up morphing virii.

In fact the only reason that Windows is such a huge target is because of how many users there are, nothing more. There are PLENTY of Unix/Linux/BSD/DOS, etc. virus out there. The only OS I know of that doesn't have virus problems would be s/390, and z/OS (ibm mainframe). -=DR=-

None of the people running "Big Iron" now are using s/370, and NONE of them are using machines older 5-10 years (if you think that's dated, ur wrong). In fact, I'd say that Unix would fall victim to that statement before "mainframes", as "mainframes" have at least been evolving exponentially, but since people still label them "mainframes", most people believe they are the same machines that takes punch-cards... "Backwards compatibility is extremely overrated" That's what Microsoft thinks too.. Guess what, the only thing that kept mainframes alive since 1962 has been it's amazing backwards compatibility. That's why I still believe, despite microsoft's money, and influence, that any _real_ player (i.e. Linux) truly has the ability to take over M$ market share, all pre-windows versions are obsolete, and could be replaced (and MUST be replaced) every x years, so why does it _HAVE_ to be replaced by M$? For a mainframe, there are MILLIONS of source code that date back to the early 70's that are STILL IN USE TODAY, you couldn't simply make them obsolete and discontinue software support, which means also, that the mainframe will not die for a VERY long time.

This is very true. IMHO once the ants deal with Prey, even though they have not been programmed to in any way, that will be real AI. AI is the ability to make decisions without ever having dealt with the scenerio before. An ant creating a "city" for example, isn't AI at all, it's good programming, yes, but not AI. If you suddenly add Prey to the equation and the ants learn ways to deal with said prey (evolution people!) then THAT would be true AI, and I feel we are still MINIMUM 5 years from this point.. As for the authors you mentioned, I started reading Dan Brown, and now I'm a true follower. Every technology he writes about is true. Another great one I'd like to add is "The Cobra Event" by Richard Preston. The technology covered in this book is SCARY. You may have heard of his book "The Hot Zone", I'd recommend Cobra event as the technology is more true-to-life. It was written years ago with future predictions on technology, and if you watch CNN at ALL you would know that his technology has become a reality, Bio-terrorism at it's scariest..
