Saying that A != B is not a no true Scotsman. Just stop it.
It certainly can be. In this case it is, because it amounts to failing to acknowledge systemic problems with the scientific publishing establishment. In that frequently critical claims go no further than peer review before gaining acceptance, and reproducing results doesn't quite get the attention it needs.
My solution: rather than having PhD thesises being predicated on new discovery, they should be about reproducing an as-yet-unreproduced result that's been published, or better and more respectable, taking out an existing paper.
Duh, once an idea is explained, everyone who has any sort of similar idea has to stand behind that exact version. That's why all environmentalists have to join Greenpeace, and all gun owners have to be republicans.
That's just how ideas work. You can't have your own, that wouldn't make any sense at all. Then the world would be all complicated, and you couldn't just sort people into easy categories.
Ugh you stole my thunder, I was going to pretend to be an ignoramus who didn't know Church was a surname. But your delivery was lackluster, it could've been done so much better.
It's the rallying cry of every vehicular product that tries to maintain the status quo by being small and cheap. Our problems are not one that can be solved by a marketing campaign.
I wish that phrase didn't set off my "marketing bullshit" alarms(as is clearly appropriate in this case) because a culture of long-distance driving commutes is leading to serious long-term problems with respect to suburban sprawl and blight. Retreating residential neighborhoods a little further down the interstate every time an area falls into disrepair(and no, it's not just white flight) is causing huge swaths of places where no one will ever want to live.
As someone who respects Gates' post-wealth philanthropy, finds Apple products to be over-marketed while uninteresting technically, and loves poetic justice:
I don't think you can expect every human being in society to be personally responsible for every kind of problem that exists. There's just not enough time in your life.
That almost sounds like cap-and-trade. Apparently such market-based solutions are too much for Americans these days, and they will call them communism.
Yeah,(almost) anyone already living inside the city has enough public transit at their disposal that carpooling isn't going to be the sensible solution to this requirement.
Those don't cause smog in your own city, and transport represents over a quarter of all energy usage, so gotta call BS on the general "Drop in the bucket" principle you're pushing as well.
It's only true if you're ignoring both the context, and giving a lot of wiggle room for the phrase "drop in the bucket".
If murder was wrong, murder would have evolved out of the system.
Evolution exists, evolution isn't a goal. You're saying "The holocaust happened, therefor we should kill Jews." Facts should inform our decisions, facts shouldn't be our decisions.
Orders of magnitude are an important part of understanding the significance of sample data, versus error. That's like, high school chemistry stuff. It seems relevant to the fact that they're trying sample incredibly small variations.
Yeah, but the number of times I've brought up something that is important in its relationship to something I understand relatively deeply, without pushing much of an opinion and getting an off topic mod, well they number in the threes or fours, at least.
Noise is "easy" enough to account for, but what about other things that could generate similar signals. like constant gas expansion in the mantle, or whatever? I'd be fascinated to know if they have some tools to help with that.

Those are odd choices. Do I smell a douchebag with political opinions that disagree with entire fields of study?
You're reading "nerdish" as a negative adjective. I do not believe it was intended as such.

What are you smoking, anyways?
They're crowded with all the things that make cities unpleasant: idiots, buildings, roads.
Ugh you stole my thunder, I was going to pretend to be an ignoramus who didn't know Church was a surname. But your delivery was lackluster, it could've been done so much better.
"I fail to see how writing notes is a basic application of paper"
Jeez, basic tools to use a computer coming with the operating system? Do they have any other genius ideas?
Well, yeah, but every problem is someone's particular problem.
Well, that would instantly make them shitty human beings, but, pretending your suburbs aren't "crowded cities" is, at best, deluding yourself.

We aren't though, the reflexive reference would have to be to the noun "intensity" in the summary.

"Off-topic" tends to be a favored mod of people who don't understand the topic.
Sorry, I'll reply again, I was mistaken about what this meant.
My mistake then. I failed to understand the feature from the name.
Still different from what you actually said, okay? I'll drop it, but be more careful in your phrasing, and don't blame me for it.
