Think of how many institutions we deal with require our SSN. With Social Security supposedly going defunct in 2041 (from the headlines) do you suppose all of these organizations are going to be so forward thinking as to choose a new "key" for each of us by then? How much is it going to suck for kids in the future to be issued a Social Security Number when it's used for pretty much everything under the sun EXCEPT for obtaining Social Security benefits.

  7. PTC has discovered technology on Lone Activist Group Submits 99.8% of FCC Complaints · · Score: 1

"The document listed tools developed by the PTC, including continual monitoring and archiving of broadcast network programs and "cutting-edge technology to make it easier for members to contact program sponsors, the FCC, or the networks directly with a simple click of the button."

It's no wonder if they have made it that easy for people to complain that the number of complaints has risen dramatically. And in the article it states that with such a drastic rise in the number of complaints, now over 99.9% of them are from the PTC.

It sounds like they are submitting the exact same complaint at the click of a button. FOX pointed out that on one show all but one complaint (or something like that) was exactly the same. And only one of the complaints actually mentioned that the person had seen the offensive show on the tv!

So basically these people have found a loophole to push their agenda. Either the rules to complain will change or tv is about to get a lot more boring.

When I was in Basic training a few years back, we had a guy in the unit with a fairly common name. He received some letters from an address he did not recognize so he sent it back. Twice. The third time it came to him he opened it and read the letters. And we all enjoyed the many enclosed photos of a lingerie-clad young lady who was trying to help her man through challenging times. :)

These pictures are quite common -- as is the willingness to share them. They must be floating around out there somewhere, but probably not on the web. You want all the guys to know you have the pics, but you certainly do NOT want the young ladies to know they are entertaining an entire platoon. (Ok, some ladies would probably get into that....)

  12. Some of these scams look pretty real on Phish Scams Fooling 28% of Users · · Score: 1, Insightful

We've all received a number of these scams, and most of us on /. are surely not likely to fall victim. But I can see why the confusion for some people:
    1. They are intimidated the moment they sit at the computer.
    2. The same people who might be skeptical as ever when dealing with a live human do not have a clue that the "internet" can be an evil place at times.
    3. Some of these sights look exactly like the page they are emulating including all the other links on the page going to the real site. These people just do not know to look for "www.ebay.com" instead of 200.50.66.71 in the address bar. That is (sadly) still meaningless to a lot of people.

Education and experience on the web is likely to reduce these issues over time, but for now, it's just a way-too-easy niche opportunity for thieves and scammers to prey upon the naive.

I tried Dell online chat support this week for the first (and last) time.

I reported that my computer continuously reboots, and never lets me in to the operating system. Their response was "Are you contacting me from the affected computer?" Ummmm, no.... or I would not have a problem.

Most of the information I found in their knowledge base advised me to "Right click on My Computer.... blah blah blah" which is probably much easier to do if the machine will ever actually finishing booting up.

Finally, I tell them that I have a mega-warranty, and I want someone to come out and get the laptop working. No dice. They tell me they only send someone out if I can prove it is something I cannot fix myself. And, because I have not completed the knowledge base steps, I am not going to get help.

I'm obviously not giving up at this point, but this has been my experience with their "service" to this point.
