As a result, China deals with constant (and little reported on) riots and instances of civil unrest that are completely alien to most Western governments.
I've bolded the funny parts. So you agree that the US government only has to keep you content enough to prevent revolution. As long as prices don't rise too much and the tv works, you're content to let your rights wither away.

How much "say" does any average American have in their own governance ? Ooooh, you get to "vote" once in a while, and then the politicos do what they want anyway.

Completely alien, no. Actively feared and heavily discouraged, yes. G8 summits ? anti-war protests ? Petrol price protests ? Council tax protests ?

I realise that the last two are UK based occurrences, but that allows me to mention that when I said the US government before, I actually meant most US influenced governments.

When the wall came down and the cold war was finally over, the governments of this world were left with a problem - how to justify their own (bloated) existences. Hence the "war" on terror. If China was to turn around tomorrow and renounce communism, and kiss Uncle Sams ass, we, as normal peace loving hard working people, would be completely fucked. It is not right that the USA is the only super power on the planet. How many military actions have been shelved because the chinese won't let it happen. I don't agree with human rights violations, but I also don't agree with a political mono-culture, globalisation, and the prevention of terrorism (where terrorism is newspeak for fighting for your freedom). He upgraded that to a beefier gemini later on, but apart from playing around in Z80 assembler I never really got to use that one. In fact I still have that machine and (AFAIK) it still runs (I must dig it out and try it). That's back when Norton actually made some useful software !

After that I had a brief fling with a 286 and windows 3.1 before upgrading to a 386 and the same OS.

When I did get a cd drive and speakers Doom was cool though, especially with Rob Zombie playing as the game music.

After that, I upgraded to a 200 mhz cpu and then on to a cyrix 300mhz socket 7. That chip and various upgrades lasted me until 2000 (!) when I splashed out and got an AMD 1400 T-bird with new everything (and a flashy Elsa Gladiac 920 Nvidia based graphics card). I still have that box, although it is on an AMD XP2200 chip now and is only used for games and TV (windows 98se). Because of the way the earth spins, and the distrobution of land and water, there are "climate bands" going around the globe. At the top, there is a cold one (obviously), beneath that, a "warm" band, then a cooler one, and a warm band again at the equator. This explains some of the wierd things about global climates, including how Alaska and Great Britian are at about the same latitude, but the climates are radically different.
How, exactly does that explain anything ?

If Great Britain and Alaska are at about the same latitude, then surely they would fall within the same "climate band". But the climates are radically different, so your explanation leaves a lot to be desired.

The explanation of the weirdness should include the existence of the North Atlantic drift, which carries warm water from the caribbean to western europe, thereby raising the average temparatures around Great Britain, which would otherwise have a very similar climate to Alaska.

Explanations that make no sense do more harm than good, as even if the audience is not hyper intelligent, they do normally have common sense. So if your reasoning is at all suspect, then the baby tends to leave with the bathwater.

This reminds me of an show called Beyond 2000, which I saw in Australia. They were describing how a plane wing works, and said that because of the shape of the wing (curved on top) the air was "forced downwards" and so pushed down which made the plane rise. Utter crap ! As most of us are aware, the curved surface makes the air travel further (and hence faster) on the top of the wing than on the underside, which causes a low pressure region on the top of the wing. This then creates lift as the air underneath the wing pushes up to restore the pressure. It's more like "suck" than lift really. But Beyond 2000 told a bare-faced lie (IMHO) on national tv. And that is a science program :/

All this ranting is not meant to be a personal attack, but rather, as with global climate change, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem !
