This is the self protection of the GPL and LGPL. It's saying that since I allow you to benefit from my work, you agree to allow me to do the same with yours. It's called collaboration. I've seen a bunch of programs with the BSD licence get used by proprietary software without having anything ever contributed back.

  2. Re:Will this always happen. on FSF, OpenOffice.org Team Reach Agreement on Java · · Score: 5, Interesting

This stuff happens because you shouldn't build open/free software off proprietary software. If you want to use open software as a foundation or library for your proprietary software, that's fine...but you don't develop open source code with a closed source language. It defeats the purpose of it being open. Linus found out the hardway and I'm glad that Open Office will hopefully be having an easier time...

I'd like to see a source based distro that relied on Autopackage for it's application myself... You'd let your libraries, the kernel, userland, X, Gnome/KDE, and low level OS type software be custom compiled ala Gentoo, and then for all your software like Firefox, Gimp, Mplayer, etc you would use Autopackages. It would be quite a challenge to create, but it would be well worth it...Here are a few further thoughts I've had on it.

The first Xbox and Xbox360 have completely different architecture. The only way they'll be able to make it backwards compatible is to run it through an emulator, and that'll usually kill alot of processing power. I'd imagine they're not saying yet b/c they're still not sure if they'll be able to pull it off or not...assuming "not" at the moment.

I'm going to have to disagree here... Both the graphics and level of immersion in Shenmue on the Dreamcast are still of a much higher quality than what can be found on the majority of PS2 games today. Not only that, but we never got to see anything past the first couple of second gen games...for all we know the Dreamcast could be doing some pretty incredible things right now if it were given the chance. Sega only dropped it b/c they were too far in debt from the Saturn, it's not that they didn't believe it could keep up.

Being that Red Hat is one of the largest financial contributors to Linux and open source, Microsoft buying them and cutting that funding would take a huge chunk out of who they see as their only real threat at market dominance, the open/free community.

These guys should have just focused on making mods and expansions rather than trying to brand this as a seperate game. I figure after the onslaught of FPS we saw last year maybe they'd give us a break for a year or two... :P

I'll second that... I'm a huge open-source and linux proponent....but I'm also a gamer. Whether I like MS or not, the Xbox 360's looking mighty promising. As far as corporate policy... MS, Sony and even Nintendo are fairly similar, so until someone creats an Open Console...we'll just have to deal with what we've got.

PS3 folks should be very scared. Just as Sony proved last time, the system with the best graphics doesn't always win... With 8 times the RAM and a triple core PPC processor, I don't see how anyone could call it the Xbox 1.5 though. Unfortunately, once you get past the new graphical capabilities of the next gen...you're still sadly left with the same gameplay we've been seeing since the 32 bit days....maybe Nintendo's eledged "Revolution" is the one to really be afraid of if they can carry out that promise.

Most games are released for all the systems, yet since PS2 is so much slower than the Xbox and GC...they don't look that much better on them.
