    enable autochecking on open office. or koffice (IIRC - i cant be arsed checking). i think abiword has this too.

    IIRC, AOL used to have 2 IM protocols. one was basic funtionality, the other was everything (supported at the time). the basic protocol degraded (wasn't compatible) over the years and now supports only the very basics.

    the RPM on the AOL site (IIRC) is/was only for the basic protocol.

    im not sure if the basic protocol can talk to ICQ users either (which the new one can).

    i dont mind cheating with performance except MS Office. MS think its so important that they have it partly loaded in memory for you. i use MS office very rarely, the rest of the time its just hogging memory that it doesn't need to.

    ie starts up so fast because most of it is already in memoryy (windows explorer - the desktop).i use opera and ive not used moz for a long time, but i heard about an option to make it run in the background (like IE and MS Office do)

    windows does have SMP support, but you have to pay through the nose for it. i think its either a server license or an smp server license, im too lazy to google for it

    it would be nice to see freeBSD compared against a proper distro, like debian, slackware, esmith or gentoo

    (ive never tried esmith or debian, but ive heard good things about them - especially debian, so i thought i would include them too. infact, ive not tried gentoo either - just slack, mdk and rh)

    there was a recent fork of gaim to add videoconferencing functionality into gaim - what will become of that? will it be a free way round, not work or become illegal (trying to get round paying for a service?

    will AOL change the protocol for this?

    how about this big law suit between microsoft an IBM about linux being based on their IP.

    its not officially microsoft, but it might as well be (they are funding it because longhorn is late)

    ive never tried OSX, and i doubt i ever will (unless they release an x86 version)

    i am very happy with KDE - i think thats a very productive interface

    if i get the chance to try OSX, i will (if pear gets better) but i doubt it could match the configurability of KDE.

    i agree with you that thats a good use for a pda, but thats only one feature, which a future mobile may have anyway - the PDA only option is going the way of the dodo, but the PDA that can make phone calls is thriving, and will continue to

    a PC for the same price is faster - thats why ive got one

    if you compare a top end mac to a top end PC, a mac may be faster - i dont know. if you compare bang for the buck, pc is definately faster.

    nowadays, a phone isn't a phone with loads ofpda features - its more of a PDA that can make phone calls and send text (and multimedia) messages

    if you want a pda to sell, let it make phone calls too.

    kde 3.2.2 with all the graphics, like transparent menu's. its plenty fast enough on my slackware 9.1 athlon xp 2100, 512mb ram box

    im not complaining about speed but i would like more (im odd like that)

    can anybody recommend some packages for me to compile myself for more speed (i was thinking glibc, gcc, x, kde)
