It makes no sense to play politics in space.

Sure it does. Politics is played on many levels.

For an analogy, use deep ocean sailing. Historically, it has been difficult and dangerous. To the point where even avowed enemies would help each other out in times of distress (and sometimes during periods of simply sovereign state competition). One day the other guy may be helping tow your vessel off some rocks, the next week they are shooting at you. Humans and weird and complex. Politics always follows human endeavors. In some cases, it precedes it.

Except that antenna propogation is complex and doesn't follow where the antenna is 'pointed'. General Aviation pilots talk on cell phones all of the time, in fact the new headsets have cell phone / radio switches. Now, your typical GA plane isn't at 30000 feet, but the antennas do work above the horizon line.

TFA doesn't actually state the salt content, but the energy required for desalinization is proportional to the salt concentration. So brackish water is, energetically (and economically) a much better deal than regular ocean water.

Recall this water isn't really fresh - it has too much salt to drink or use in household supplies. It has to be desalinated - not to the extent of free ocean water, but it will require significant infrastructure ($$) to use.

My 80+ yo mom has an iPad I, works fine for her. Remember, she's not compiling anything or playing Minecraft. She's just reading some web sites, playing music and light email.

The thing has been amazing - no tech support calls in years. No more LogMeIn sessions. Unless the user has a specific reason to need a newer version (some specific software, like iOS 7), then the older ones work just fine. It's still sitting on the original iOS as I don't want to change anything at this point. The chance that she will run into a security issue is pretty minimal, even with the older OS / browser. She doesn't keep credit card info on it, browses only limited sites and only emails family and friends.

They run into (stationary) power lines with impressive frequency. They get run over by cars because they like road kill (they're scavengers mostly) and they're not that all attentive (to cars, they like screaming at each other) and they're big and slow.

They certainly are iconic - in the computer sense - you see them everywhere and you haven't the faintest idea what they mean or what they're doing.

I wouldn't try selling one on Ebay - that might get you in trouble, but I've mailed a bunch to friends (including a couple of Native Americans) for years. Have a pile in a basket - somewhere.....
