Well, everyone has "limited" bandwidth. Juneau has pretty good connectivity with the rest of the world, all things considering. We even have Netflix! There are a couple of reasons why they didn't do this (instringence, sloth and I suspect a perverse sense of humor), but connectivity isn't an issue.
Even if the offices had maxed out T1's from the last century, somebody could have taken the stuff home and stuffed it through the 1 MB/sec up / 10 down cablemodem they have sitting in their living room.
Of course it's just a way to make it harder for people to find information in those mails, and there is no real reason to only give printouts.
The French ISP Free did the same stunt a few months ago. Following the three-strike HADOPI law, they had to identify users of IP addresses suspected of illegally downloading stuff, and they gave it print. Everybody thought it was a smart way to resist that stupid law.
The better way to do it would be to put it on a hard drive. Hooked to a BBS (remember those?) whose modem is set for 300 baud. Local number - we'll give you the password and go knock yourself out....
I thought of things I could use it for, but when telling others about how it worked, not only could I not explain it well (who could?), no one really saw the point of it.
My thoughts as well. Seemed to be the 21st Century equivalent of Lotus Notes.
is it really that big a deal to shut off your phone for a few minutes just to be on the safe side?
This is what I don't understand. The only times you can't use PEDs is takeoff / landing / flight below 10,000 feet. Twenty to thirty minutes out of your day at most.
Can't people just stare off into space for a few minutes? Alpha waves are good for you. From what I recall from high school, most of us were pretty good at it back then. Turn the damn things off for a few minutes.
Don't get too comfortable. My first lawsuit will be over Bambi. Do you know how offended I was when Bambi's mommy got shot? If you're a Disney shareholder, you will find out.
I've only driven once in my life where I thought I might be impaired. It was only after several minutes of driving that I though, I could have pressed the brake a little quicker. Nothing ever came of it.
But, I have been stopped many times in my life at check points only to be hassled and being repeatedly asked to violate my personal rights. I avoid them not because I had one too many 22 years ago and got behind the wheel, but because I don't enjoy being harassed by the police for no reason at all.
I should really congratulate you on the careful and caring way you have run your life and only wish the vast majority of fellow humans would follow in your august footsteps. But instead I shall deride you as an idiot who thinks the world should revolve around them.
There are customs on the road - flashing your lights to signal to someone (truckers ESPECIALLY follow this - or used to) to go ahead and pull in front of you; the flashing indicates "you're clear" and when you move over, you signal "thanks" by flashing rear fogs or brake lights (many truck drivers do that to this day, but many do not any more) once you're in your lane.
You have to trust people to do that. Don't know about you, but I just don't really just random people these days with my safety.
Perhaps just one more sign of the impending heat death of the universe.
I 'm willing to opt out and use the private roads then.
The only way I see to do that is to get a riding lawnmower and drive over everyone's front yard. It would be slow, but you could make some real friends that way. Bonus points if you clip the hedges.
Interesting. I'm on WF and just talked to the local branch manager. They don't know nothing about SecureID. Of course, I'm in SE Alaska so we're still about a lightyear away from Anchorage. Maybe by the time you come back and repurchase NY from the remaining natives, the local branches will allow more than eight characters in passwords.
It works on Windows and Mac, which for non-mobile apps is all anyone in the real world cares about. I'm not saying thats right or fair, but the world in general, isn't.
A couple of years ago, that would have been fine. Now, not so much. Although the desktop experience will be with us for a long time, a lot of growth will be in the other form factors like cell phones and tablets. Presumably, Silverlight will run on iOS but I, for one, will wait to see if this actually ever happens.
Miss the point of my comment entirely, why don't you.
Sure, this is Slashdot. Not a problem.
(Oh, BTW, you forgot the question mark at the end....)
Not to mention that most judges are former prosecutors.
And virtually all judges are lawyers. And lawyers are trained in arguing cases from BOTH sides. It's what they do....
That's like a Saturday Night Live sketch. Or maybe something Woody Allen or Mel Brooks would come up with.
Reality has been waging a very effective war on satire for some time now.

You guys just have absolutely no sense of humor... Come on, this is hilarious.

I'm fairly sure being Sarah Palin is a crime against humanity.
It's certainly a crime against humility.
Right, because no one ever bought Lotus Notes.
Not voluntarily, anyway.

That's freaking coax. No just shielded cable but coax. Are you sure it's just to minimize internal interference?

And while you're at it, get off my lawn, please.
It would mean the end of 4chan
Well that certainly puts a different light on things. Way to go Tennessee!

What about most of YouTube?
Correction, its a publicly owned business, of which I am part owner.
The private / public distinction isn't important. It's Government vs. non government. Public doesn't necessarily mean government.

Or release it for another mobile OS - perhaps one with more market share and no dickish rules about what's "appropriate"?
Yeah. Like maybe Android perhaps? Oh, wait....

Ha, looked it up. According to their website, it's only for business customers. Clever.

(Allow me some visual thinking)
Only on Oh-We-Can't-Figure-Out-Unicode Slashdot is "->" considered thinking visually ....
A bank with this degree of sophistication in Alaska? I'm impressed. Would you mind disclosing which bank it might be?
We've been using one-time pads in Finland for a long time, and they do the job.
What's the issue?
We're just trying to balance our checkbooks, not take over the world.
But it's pretty subtle. On my MBP it's just a little green glow. Easy to ignore, especially if it doesn't fire too often.
