heh, indeed, just like Galileo paid a price, or Martin Luther King... offensive truths are better kept to yourself, look at the price those people paid...
Sarcasm... Sometimes the truth offends people... and this isn't a bad thing. I'm not saying that what this guy said is the truth, I certainly don't have enough information, but I feel that this person has reached a position where it's fine that he share his opinions, even if they are unpopular.
Yes, we want choice... but why should they try and help us out? They exist for one reason. To make money. Companies that try and exist for any other reason collapse before we know their names. I'm a huge fan of Sega's sports games, and think that they're better. That being said, I don't blame EA for their decision... to quote Ray Kroc (Founder of McDonalds) on how he dealt with competitors -
If they were drowning to death, I would put a hose in their mouth.
Is it a good thing? No. Is their a better way right now? No. Hate them all you want... but as far as business goes, they made a very profitable decision, and I doubt they care what you think.
Aristotle once said that if "I hypothesize that all swans are white" that it wouldn't matter how many white swans you found, there could still be a black swan.
I apologize, I did not realize that.
And while I still believe the idea is crap, I don't believe it is as much crap. In other words, I still want to club the people who believe it with a bat, but I wont do a full swing.
Err Wrong. Intelligent Design had credence as a theory, until someone came and showed a simpler theory, that still explained everything... one that had things that could actual be tested for (although not as easily as some other theory's like gravity) Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory, rather it is a philosophy... the difference is, one can be tested, and has been, and has never been disproven, where as the other can't be tested, but people believe it anyway, because their parents told them to.
I disagree, I think that they are losing. For one thing, the lawyers are getting paid, even if they're on a payroll rather than hourly, they're being taken away from other things they could be doing. Not to mention, due to all of this bad publicity, they are taking a cut in sales. Despite a yearly growth of 3(?) percent, in the record industry, their particular labels, especially the main ones, are taking a hit, as people like myself, run from anything they touch, and support the alternatives... They aren't dead yet, and they wont be dead for a long time, but I think they're boat has already begun taking in water.
"Copyright Matthew Minix 2004". If you are the copyright holder, then that's more than a little hypocritical, don't you think?
Yes. My only excuse is habit, from when I took web design in class...
So? What's your point? You spent more money on non-essentials this year than last, even though you made less money?
My point is that this "infringement" is helping the people getting infringed on. Sure, I didn't buy every song I downloaded, but I did buy everyone I kept.
s: You think that you have the right to determine whether or not you should pay for someone else's IP, AFTER you've already garnered the benefit of it? Or, are you saying that you think that you have the right to benefit from it for free, because you think that it is crap?
I've got a question, do you always watch the commercials on tv? Always let banner ads load? never change radio stations when one changes to a commercial? These are all things that the different forms of media count on to get their money... they figure that some people will switch off, but because of this, they lose money... Though, I'll admit, there aren't a lot of people yelling "Watch commercials or die!" though there are some, but, you can't please everyone, all the time... I've just chosen to displease a slightly larger portion of the population than you, which I can live with.
On the other hand, what about people who _would_ pay 99 cents were the copyright infringement option not availible? They certainly represent lost sales due to piracy.
They do indeed, I wouldn't/couldn't argue that. As far as the theater example... what's wrong with you sneaking in and seeing it? (assuming the theater didn't sell out, and you didnt' cause a mess) you wouldn't be depriving anyone of anything, and giving yourself something that will kill a couple of hours, when you would've just been typing on slashdot =)
I see the point, but, I'm of the belief that the freer things are, the better... if I make something, I feel anyone else can use it to be entertained by it, learn from it, whatever, as long as my ability to use it isn't hindered... but, I also don't see the issue as a black or white issue... whereas others are willing to label things absolutely right or absolutely wrong... and I don't have anything to base those absolute values off of.
I'm just curious, what is your code of ethics based upon? I don't see there being an absolute right, and an absolute wrong... for me, it's more or less the golden rule... I'm alright with others taking my creations (as long as they don't hinder my abilities to use it) and encourage it. If you go and take your neighbors lexus, he can't use it, but if you were to make an exact replica, without taking anything from anyone, I'd be perfectly happy with it... however, if you were willing to pay 50,000 for a Lexus, and you didn't because you could make a copy, then you would be depriving someone of something they would otherwise have...
but it still boils down to your decision to deprive someone of potential earnings.
I download music... quite frequently, for a variety of reasons... say I download a madonna song... It's worth the 3 seconds it will take me to click on the link, that I saw browsing for another song, to get it and listen to it once, but its not worth 99 cents on itunes... if I had to pay 99 cents, there is no way I would get it... so I am not a potential sale, because I know there's no way I'd buy that song... on a sidenote, I've spent more on CD's this year, than any year prior, and I made less than the year prior (by a good margin) though, to the RIAA's credit... most of my music is no longer owned by one of their labels... so they are, in effect losing money because I can now find a wider range of things, and have found better stuff that they don't produce...
While you couldn't write a program that could tell you for sure whether or not the article is a dupe, you could have a list of articles displayed that show the same subject, (search for proper nouns, verbs, links) the only downside would be a small wait, but any decent computer could do it in a reasonable time (less than a minute?) and then if there were ones that "scored" high enough (enough matching nouns, verbs, links) then the editor would just look them over... but, no one will write it or use it so this is all pointless...
That causes another problem... sorta... if macamp came first, as according to his post, then a port wasn't necessary... also, the port request, if it came in 2001, would be during his poisoned time... which seems unlikely... I think its likely, as someone else said, that its someone pretending to be him, or, although he may be a fine programmer, he's still crazy, and didn't invent Winamp, though he may still believe he did...
5 years meditating to remove poison from the body is just a bit too farfeteched for me... as a sidenote, I decided to see if I could verify a couple of the provable claims he made in the letter... the restaurant in Hawaii for example, rated #1 by PETA? doesn't seem to exist... but maybe he created it under a different name, and the 1 was a typo for 5 (there was a restaurant in Hawaii rated 5 by Peta... but the owner had a different name) Yeah... I just can't buy it... not to mention the fact that the original winamp wasn't all that impressive coding wise, and Justin Frankel has certainly proved to be capable of more with his other endeavors... with every person in the spotlight, there will be someone who will try and take it away... I think this is just one of those cases.
ok... I don't KNOW the truth... but after reading that, I'm inclined to believe that Dmitry, is insane. Maybe he's insane because he was cheated out of something, but I'm inclined to doubt it... more likely he was crazy before... for one thing... day long meditations, for 5 years, to clear out poison? Nobody does day long meditations for one day unless they're already crazy, much less for 5 years... intentional or not, that letter is a troll.
yes, you can play without a gamepad... there are several sites that have SNES roms... torrent sites (that are still alive) for one, or Cherry roms. (I think its www.cherryroms.com... but not sure, just type in cherry roms in google) I think you have to sign up there, but unless things have changed, it's an easy sign up... I've run across others as well, if you go to www.zophar.net and check out their links, they typically link to a few different rom sites.
Come on, sure its getting IBM exposure, but it does qualify as news. 100TB's is a big leap up, and it's something I'm interested in reading about, even if a company stands to gain from it.
Thats a good idea... then people with companies that choke off access to usenet (sbc, time warner) would still be able to get stuff... the only problem I can see is that some of the tracker sites are still probably going to get hunted down and killed... lets just hope enough of them are outside of the US and europe.
Another point, is that given the amount of time theorized since the big bang (~10 billion years) is that enough time for a stable planetary environment to be created, and for a sentient species to be created, and enough time for that species to populate a significant portion of the universe for us to know about them? My guess is that there are other intelligent species out there, and there will be many more in the incomprehensible amount of time left before a big implosion, or until all matter is too far away from each other to support life) but that we're one of the earliest ones. (Relatively speaking)
Heh, just in case someone see's this and goes "oooh" what a cool hosting company, check out their forums... every once and a while you'll find posts from people who can't access their accounts, and can't get any support... I was one of these people, and it literally took me 6 months to get them to stop charging me... at the very least, try calling their customer service line, more often then not, no one will answer, and when someone does, they wont do crap... try another company, try any other company... but fuitadnet sucks.
EA's NBA Live series has the ability to create databases in DBF format that can be brought into the game. Because of this, rosters of all types have appeared, yet that hasn't stopped each subsequent game outselling the ones before it. Now if someone released an identical game to the one before, yes, people wouldn't buy it... but the changest don't have to be super extreme, as EA seems to have shown... I think someone should do it, or else accept defeat.
My brother and I work at a company making efficiency programs... for awhile we toyed with the idea of having all of the programs activated by voice... we tested it out for awhile with an open source cantation originally used for games, that would execute a command, or type text based on what you said... for a while, it was awesome, every time we said something, it'd find the word from our list, and activate the program... problem was, when it listened to your voice, it only compared it to the words you had programs assigned to... so if you had four words, no problem, but if you had 60, it started choosing horribly... we eventually had to scrap the program all together... though it was funny watching what programs it would have to run through when I started cursing in frustration... I'm pretty sure the annoyance of people talking to their computers all over the building would have caused problems as well.
You make a good point here... I've been pretty specific in blaming certain people for causing the extreme polarity in this country... but, I think you're right... I myself read news sites/blogs/slashdot that fit, for the most part, my own worldview... even media sources that a good deal of people view as too liberal, I view as too conservative...
Though that's been admitted... I'd guess that I've got a long ways to go before I can stop looking at people with views opposite mine as anything other than "moron, dope, a tool, or a shill"...
As a note that supports this claim... during the 1700's when the revolution took place, there were an increasing amount of pamphlets, where some people would get most of their "opinions" from England, and the others from Revolutionists (ie: Common Sense by Thomas Paine for example) Leads me to wonder, if we're about to reach a point where the different sides can't coexist anymore.
