I'll give it a shot...
Back in days of yore, Kazaa was given away for free for people to download to connect to the fast track netword. Then someone came along and modded the program, and created kazaa-lite. This gave users many added benefits, and made getting files easier. But, the changes were freely available, and then a company took those changes, renamed them, "gave" them away on a website that required your email address, and they bundled a ton of spyware crap in (not that the regular Kazaa didn't already start out with enough of that as it was.
If you want to see the evil that is Kazaa Gold, it still exists, and can be found here... just don't download it =) forms of Kazaa Lite can still be found if anyone must use the Fast Track network... =) hope this helped.
People have been saying stuff like that for years... but people tend to with enough motivation find a way around everything... right now with the other programs Steam has no one's really needed to pirate anything... everything but CZ is free, and CZ is so close to CS I doubt anyone cares. But Source... I think it could be enough motivation... no matter how much faith Valve puts in Steam I dont think they can be too safe. I could be wrong, but I'd bet that there is a way to pirate it, though it'd probably be a lot of work getting it to run on something besides steam.
I think, because it's beta, this is a controlled test for them. As in, they don't have to worry about people pirating it just yet... also they might not be ready to test it on anything but a lan.
I'm surprised given the other engines that they list, they don't have information on the Serious Engine, and the Serious Engine 2 (not releasedyet, currently in development for Serious Sam 2, (not second encounter) these are incredibly well documented and powerful engines. Some of the videos for the Serious Sam 2 engine look as good as anything i've yet seen in Doom 3. I guess it just isn't all inclusive yet.
Ha, this is how I keep all of my CD-Keys, rather than keep all of the cd cases, stickers, instruction manuals and boxes, I one day wrote a program that just scans a line on an image I uploaded, where different pixel colors represented different colors. To anyone who see's it it looks like a normal picture, but, for me I can extract any cd key I have from it. Easy, and portable.
a game that I enjoy for 20 hours is much better than a game that I hate for 150.
While I agree with this statement, what about a game that you enjoy for the first 30 hours, and then hate for the next 120 over a game that you enjoy for 20 hours. I'm looking forward to this game because of the vast amount of things I expect I'll be able to do. I'm guessing with all of the options there's only a slim chance I'll hate it right off the bat... I'm sure I'll get bored with it eventually just like the other 2 gta 3's, but if it provides me a decent amount of fun before it hits the repetitive wall I will consider it a good buy.
What? I didn't say anything about condoning the theft of the CD. I think most people will agree that this was an unfourtanate thing to happen to this band. However, if my house gets robbed, I don't go over to my neighbors house and beat him to death with a rake. I think U2 is punishing the wrong people.
I'm sorry, I suppose I should've been more clear. Assuming this CD isn't ready to be released, and doesn't have everything finished, the tracks assumably would be of a lower quality than the ones that would be otherwise released in November. So by releasing the CD now, these tracks never reach their ultimate potential, and the customers that were willing to wait until November for the best quality possible will not now have that opportunity.
What's sad is it's the "real" fans that are going to be hurt by this. The fans that care enough about only hearing the finished product... to me this is like U2 pissing on their fans, all in the interest of making a few extra bucks.
They did this before with Drengin.net, which I thought about joining, but despite their other year long subscription having almost weekly updates Drengin hardly ever changed. It didn't seem worth it to me to spend 50 dollars for a service with at the time only one quality product.
On the opposite side of the spectrum though, I'd be a little worried with this "game released every month" thing. I've got a feeling games are going to be rushed, especially near the end. If a game has to come out on a certain date there is a large chance that it wont be at its full potential. Not to mention the short time for development. Assuming they have 6 teams (probably high for a company the size of Stardock) developing games, thats a game every six months! Chances are these wont be games competing with other mainstream games. I'm not saying this endeavor is without a doubt going to fail, but I certainly will not be one of the first people to give them a shot.
I can understand how someone could find this offensive, but, I think it's just a little too harsh.
I personally have a handicap, and to be honest, I appreciate when people make jokes about it... I don't consider them cruel or offcolor, (except in the rare cases they are delivered with the intent of being cruel) to me its an acknowledgement of me as a person that someone can still treat as an equal. I doubt that there are many people who don't hold Hawking in extremely high esteem, and I in no way believe comments made by people who respect him in refference to his handicap would offend him, rather the people who try to ignore the obvious.
There really isn't all that much to understand. Adding it certainly doesn't take away from the knowledge gained, it's just a humourous addition to the story, that to some makes it more interesting. At the very least it humanizes the people who made this discovery.
I imagine many people have been waiting for the next big game (be it doom3 or hl2 or, poor suckers, Duke Nukem Forever).
I know I sure have. Every time I think "It's time to go get a new computer game" a fear overwhelms me. "What if Half Life 2 or Doom 3 is released tomorrow! I will have to throw the game I'm buying away! Not to mention the fear of not being able to afford it when it does come out!" These two games with their delays have probably cost the gaming industry quite a bit of money, but personally my wallet thanks them.
That's not a bad idea at all. The only thing question/critique I have is, would a portion of the $1.50 (say, 20 cents, or 30% of whatever that track is currently going for) go to the owner of the site/company? If so, I'd say it's got a chance of being successful, if not, I think the bandwidth would gnaw them away.
Does anyone else think that maybe this company is full of idiots? Any self respecting person would've left them months ago. I mean, sure there are other organizations that get a lot of heat on slashdot, SCO, etc, but it seems to me like we're giving a lot more responsibility to Diebold than SCO will ever have.
Tin Foil Hat: I'm going to go ahead and predict that wherever these machines are used, there will be some pretty lopsided results... I don't think I need to tell you which side I think they'll favor...
Say you have a website that recieves a lot of traffic, and you have banner ads on your website that generate revenue. For some of the people in this position a half a day can be a lot of money. Because of this, it causes a hinderance to switching hosts, and the company hosting has the ability to jack up prices unfairly, because you really don't have much of a choice in leaving.
Now, however, you can leave, it will mean lower hosting prices for everyone. Not to mention, having a process be more efficient is always a good thing, even if to the average person it seems to make no difference.
If you enjoy speed runs you should check out the game N. It's free, and it was practically made for awesome speed demos. Your replay is recorded for every best run through every level, and the top 20 runs of every level (and episode, which is a collection of 5 levels) are saved online and downloadable in game. Trust me, its worth checking out.
While yes, these people are much poorer than people in america, and other developed countries typically are, to say that they only make 1 dollar a day is misleading. The people that make this in these countries (most of the countries anyway) aren't starving, but instead of relying on their money are using other items for barter to get food... I don't think he was saying that these people are relatively rich and we should just ignore them, rather I think he was pointing out that they're not as bad as people typically imagine when they hear 1 dollar per day.(in most places, though no one can deny that in some places things are indeed really bad, this being typically places with difficulty with natural resources, and the ability to produce items to trade with.)

One time in Reno, I downloaded a U2 album just to watch it be removed from my hard drive.

Actually, it wont be that hard. Since he lost all of his flesh, and muscle, his fingers being now just bone are no longer as big as the screen.
