I'd suggest you went with rochen.com

I've been with them for years now... not the cheapest around but I've never had a problem with them and I know for a fact their infrastructure exists.

    Checkout their forums here http://forums.rochen.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

I will admit to knowing the CEO reasonably well ... but that's only because when they were small it was only a 2 man outfit... nowadays they've spread into Australia (with news of that announced on yahoo) host clustered severs for premier league football clubs in the UK and large open source bulletin board organizations.

I've used many hosts in the past, some just sucked, others over charged or over sold and I have to say that if you want a serious player in the hosting game these guys suck the least!

My username on there is Nossie, but I don't get any financial gain from recommending them. Again they really know their shit, are not a back bedroom or basement operation and above all actually want to provide their customers with the best available products and service.

    In the uk at least...

An EXCELLENT PC that would last a few years before going out of date in 1995 was £1800-2000
Even then I could have picked up a £500 4Mb ram DX2 66... but I could have hardly ran magic carpet on it never mind anything else !

An EXCELLENT PC that would last a few years before going out of date in 2005 was £1800-2000
Even then I could have picked up a £500 celeron ... but I could have hardly ran Dark age of Camelot on it never mind anything else !

I built a £600 computer for a friend 2 years ago using the best available components at the time for the price point (sadly including an integrated motherboard...) Will he be running vista anytime soon? I doubt it (scratching basic requirements) (his wife btw demanded windows at the time)

So yes... you can buy an apple mini for $600 and if you go the official upgrade path with apple in the uk a reasonable mini will cost you more like £999 and will still be dead in the water in less than 2 years !

The only thing that has really changed is media... You can run reasonable quality digital audio and video on an entry level Pc unlike 10 years ago but when HDTV/HDMI comes into play the majority of those PC's will also be dead in the water...

I guess you could also say the same for business workstations and office needs... but I'm thinking if Microsoft get their way you'll need a £1,000+ computer to run the next office at the same functionality as your £600 3 year old computer runs office 2000 today. At least however, unlike 1995, I can have a substantial spreadsheet open and not have the computer creaking and shaking like its something out of the dark ages... that is of course, unless I was running it in DOS... and things were still fast and furious then.

The point of the argument I'm trying to make here is that YES you can now buy a computer for $600 that does the majority of home tasks you need for today. The computer will run a good percentage of games available within the last 6 months and before at medium level graphics but it wont do you any good in the near future... its a consumable, an appliance if you will.

In the above respect your mac mini is very much a 'console' in itself, and just like the PS2 or xBox will be downgraded to the 'standalone dvd player' variety within a number of years... For what the mini does I think its great, but to suggest its competitive to the PS3, 360 or even possibly the Wii I think is pushing it a little. Admittedly I can add more memory to a mac mini... but the graphics card is a great letdown for any serious gamer.

I dont think things have changed that much apart from to suggest the signal to noise ratio has significantly increased since the price of a bog standard PC has came down in general. But that could be considered elitist, and I realise there are many exceptions... but I think I preferred the internet way back when the majority of usage was academic -- at least I didn't have to put up with leet speak and all the other crap that I believe has increased (porn excluded) due to the commoditization of computers.

    Disclaimer:
just to note I think that

    A) Sony has over priced its product here and expects everyone to pay the brand (being a Nintendo fanboy I hope people dont *coff*) ... but like the sheeple in the UK that cant afford to live a healthy life but can seem to buy a £80 designer 'brand' top... it wouldn't surprise me if many families in the uk went without food just so their kid could buy into the next Sony generation.

    B) I realise my examples above were very PC based but nothing was meant as a dig to apple as a company or their products. I have a highly modified Apple cube that I use as a webserver/fileshare/torrents etc that I absolutely adore and will continue to tinker with. I feel that like the Mini, the cube was ahead of its time and the amount of engineering involved is amazing... but then I do have a 256mb 5600 gfx card in the cube.

We aren't asking about what hit the pentagon to penetrate so many layers.... it was a 757 right? we all know what aircraft are made from? Or was it? That is the question here.... The administration is TELLING us the information... all we are looking for is a photo or footage that properly shows such proof... why cant they provide that? aircraft just don't disappear no matter how hard they hit.

jimho uneducated opinion.... the tailfin of this supposed aircraft at the pentagon should atleast be visible.... what is left of the wings should probably be scattered across the lawn... but there is no sign of that? just one 16ft wide hole in an unoccupied part of the building that remained there until the structual integrety of that wing collapsed.

There has been so much press about the aircraft that hit the towers.... but so little information was ever given out about this one.... it was just brushed under the carpet.

video footage taken by eyewitnesses at the scene show a very small hole 16ft!! (in comparison to a 757) in the pentagon wall before the roof collapsed with no evidence of aircraft wreckage and even half open filing cabinets with papers hanging out unburnt on the interior sides of the damaged building.

I don't pretend to be an expert.... and I'm not even very active in shouting how much of a conspiracy this is...

Is it pure coincidence that area of the pentagon had been shut for refurbishment that week too?

It's all just so wrong on so many levels. The BBC first reported it to be a light aircraft but suddenly its a 757 ?

I have a XDAII phone... prolly one of the most powerful 'phones' on the market..

People say to me 'hey your phone is huge' But I look at it from another perspective... A mobile phone does one main thing -- make calls (one they play a few games of Bejeweled 2 their minds change)

My PDA does one main thing -- works as a generic pda... The plus side to this and many other particular pda's is that it makes calls and includes the majority (if not all) of the features expected in a phone.

The truth is.... I dont want to carry a phone, pda, GBA and ipod around with me at all times (I dont see the point 'yet' of cameras in phones)

I have an Ixus 700 for photos... and a NDS for games... but unless I want to do one of those things specifically -- my phone does all I need. (being a huge Zelda fan doesn't help my Nintendo addiction)

I have a 1GB SD card I use to store my games, apps and music.. not quite ipod size but I dont need to carry my cd/mp3 collection around with me at all times... to me, the size of your ipod HD is the size you wish your penis was... unless that is, you do a hell of a lot of travelling or *insert some other very good reason for carrying 40GB of music around with you*

You want to know the main reason why I love my phone? I'm lazy with contacts... plain and simple, whither its (e-)mail addresses, birthdays, phone numbers etc etc I scribble them down then lose the scrap bit of paper... Now? I just fill a contact in on my phone... then sync it to outlook when I get home (I hate MS OS's but love Outlook) and I can keep a lovely formated database of my friends and family.

I'm kinda thinking that a pda/phone is a 'supercar' of the 'phonr' world... yes my ass was raped on royalties, technology and current components... but overtime those things will be comoditized and brought into the consumer market (whither we like it or not) viruses and all... air conditioning will become standard and the world will be a happy place *coff*

I dont feel very smug about what I have.... I work in a stupid fricking bakery 10 hours a day to meet UK minimum wage -- so I EARNED what I've bought... yes I live with my parents, yes I dont have children to pay for but I do love my technology and it shows.

The point I'm trying make here, is that I dont have a huge brick of a phone..

I have a small computer with all the features of the common phone.. I *expect* it to get viruses.. I expect it to crash (no MS comments here please!) and I expect it to do what I bought it for.

I use my phone for most of the features that I daily use my computer for.. I just don't need to carry around a 'heavy' laptop to do them..

OTOH this virii crap is all FUD FUD and more FUD... The reason is that the majority of phones all run different firmware and roms catered for that particular phone.. and if I remember rightly, that bluetooth virus requires someone to accept it to actually work!

I feel that ALL the antivirus corporations are just waiting for everyone to catch the virus buzzword and jump on the bandwagon (they will be there to 'help' of course) but I've never heard of one major virus outbreak that wasnt down to the operators stupidity (corporate or otherwise) to justify installing it on mine.

Just my 2 cents.... I hated mobiles and never had one before I bought my pda... but since I have and use 90% of the features... I dont think I'd want to ever go back.
