Sometimes, firing up a bittorrent client and downloading something will rapidly cause my internet to slow to a crawl... I'm talking pings of 2500+ to google.com.
However, capping the upload speed to something ridiculously low (10-30 k/sec) seems to fix the problem.
It makes me wonder if the upstream pipe is just saturated with all the connections made in the P2P network.
Furthermore, it doesn't always happen. Sometimes it does just fine with higher upload speeds, so it must have something to do with time of day and/or network conditions.
Well, if you had bothered to google how bit torrent works, or proper settings, you'd find that they suggest capping your upload speed to half your upload speed.
For example, i have DSL, with like a crappy 70k upstream. I run my bittorrent at 35k UPstream cap. And as long as I'm not getting greedy and trying to download a bunch of shit at once, my connection if fine.
If i'm playing EQ2, i cap my download at 350k, and i can play eq2, download stuff with utorrrent, no problem.
Most bit torrent programs suck right out of the box and don't perform well unless you change settings, which most users are way to stupid to understand.
Really? Perhaps you've never heard of the United States? We've had rolling blackouts over here several times. In fact, it looks like many places in the world have had rolling blackouts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_blackout#Texas...
... Do you really believe that the officer brought a gas can and someone in civilian clothes along to go intimidate a reporter? He was likely giving someone who had run out of gas a ride and the reporter chose to interperet the encounter as some sort of nebulous conspiracy to get some publicity for the story.
cops do NOT do that, sorry.
Cops actually help someone who is out of gas? ROFL, where the fuck do you live, the 1950's?
Seriously, I find that explanation the hardest to accept.
how much many modern people assume our primitive ancestors were total morons who had more in common with a screaming chimp than modern humans in their ability to grasp what they saw happening around them. How fucking arrogant do you have to be to believe that they were just making up something....
Not sure, but all them religions seemed made up...
The new radar image looks like the bald scalp and the eyes of Phantom, the Ghost who walks. (Walker when he comes out of the African Jungles on missions). Indrajal Comics used to reprint them in India. Wonder if he was as popular in USA/Europe. Wondering how I never even noticed the racial overtones when I was young.
Yes, it was in the newspapers comics (weekdays and weekends) and even enjoyed a spin off (Phantom 2040) cartoon.
Always like it,not sure why exactly, just struck a cord with me i guess.
What did the Palestines do to us? I know we hate them, i just don't understand why.
Did they copy copyrighted software? Do they not sell us oil? Are they communist? Oh, i know, they host Wikileaks?
I know this doesn't have anything to do with religion, since we made America it's own country because of the lack of freedom to believe/worship how people wanted to worship/believe. Oh, and because of Taxes, so maybe Palestine are taxing us?
I understand why the world hates us, but i can't understand why we would hate the Palestines, unless it's because they are Arabs and it's cool to hate Arabs.
Don't know what it's overhead was, didn't matter, it did the job i needed.
And anyways, we are talking about DOS programs comparing them to modern Windows programs.
You have a UI and other crap built in with Windows that you had to do yourself in Turbo Pascal/C.
Memory managment? I know Turbo C didn't do it, so I doubt very much Turbo Pascal did.
ya, it had a smaller footprint, but it didn't have to do as much, unless you programmed it in.
But I do agree alot of software is pure bloat these days, and I figure it's because the dev's don't care. They got 16gb in their machines and they expect everyone else to be like them.
Mexico is a sovereign nation. Did you stop to think how condescending it sounds to say we "let" Mexico do anything? We've already flooded northern Mexico with people from various US government agencies. What's your plan? Shall we send in the army, too? Who will we fight?
The US government sold the cartels thousands of guns, which have been used to kill hundreds of people including police officers and politicians. I'm sure the Mexicans would be just as happy not to have much more "help" from the US.
Isn't that exactly what we are doing in the middle east?
You can pic any issue of Proceso magazine to read about corruption in Mexico, the Anonymous list will be used or can be used to falsely flag people in the payroll of cartels. We have already big troubles with the anonymous report of innocent people as members of cartels or kidnappers, we don't need a list made by script kiddies. My grandmother was falsely accused of being a kidnapper and had her house stormed by the army, my uncle beaten and my cousin sent to the hospital. In the end, it appeared that the ones doing the tip were the actual kidnappers to make a big fuss in my grandmother's small town were she is a loved and respected citizen, the kidnappers got away. Due process exist for a very good reason, laws were not written by tree hugging hippies, they were wrote by victorious revolutionaries that put their life in the line to make a better society.
So, your bitching about anonymous, using an example that has actually nothing to do with what anonymous is doing, but with corrupt or stupid ass police officals, who decided that a "tip" they received was enough proof to terroize your family.
Sounds to me like your just angry.
You know, the police in your grandma's town probably are working with the kidnappers, and used it as an excuse to beat some sense into your family. Because by your post, you need it.
did the beta, wasn't too bad. Probably buy it after xmas when the prices come down.
Seriously, you want to know if it runs, download the fucking game and try it. If it doesn't, don't waste your money. If it does, then you can safely buy it if you want.
You are locked to their eco-system. iTunes, Propreitory docks and cables, etc. Note that the spirit of the OP's comment applies to iPod Touch and iPhone too.
I own an iPod classic 6, and while I am stuck using the software that is on the iPod, i use Winamp to move my music to my iPod. I don't even have iTunes installed.
And while I locked down to the firmware that is in the Classic 6, it does what I need it to, play music. Sure, i convert flac to mp3, but whatever, that isn't hard.
Doesn't cost my anything, and i get to watch what i want, in what quality i want, after i download it.
Nope, I don't stream. dont' wanna stream. I like download, watch, delete. (or keep if it's something really hard to get).
I have comcast HD cable with the premium channels (I don't pay for it, my neighbor does. I share my internet with him.) and the quality of their HD streams is horrible. Unless I really want to watch something when it's aired, i prefer to download episodes because the quality is at least twice as good.
Seriously, when people move, i can see distortions around them where the codec can't keep up. Granted, I have better eye sight for this stuff then most people, but it's not cool.
But, I get my TV shows before they usually air, commercial free and in better quality then what Comcast HD can deliver. And i don't have to pay for the service.
Now, I don't have a problem downloading copyrighted materials of the internet. My money still gets spent on what I want, I support the business that have stuff I like. But the greed the corporations have been showing in the last few years have only reinforced my belief that what I am doing is not only wrong, it's my duty as a person to not support these practices. Piracy has always been around, and the thing is, it's easier to get stuff now, yes, but at the same time, it's easier for the corporations to get us the stuff, and they don't. They want to throw in DRM and crap that makes it worse then what you can get for free. All in the name to increase a bigger profit then what they are currently getting.
But netflix, they were the video rental stores of the internet age and they stupidly listened to the board of directors instead of their subscribers. And they learned. Thing is, you don't hear any other company saying they picked up netflix's subscribers that left, so chances are, they are just downloading the stuff for free now.
And who drove them to that?
Get with the times Media companies, people are going to get what they want, in the manner they want. If you don't offer it decently, they will go get it for free. People show they don't mind paying for stuff, which is good, but fuck them over too many times, and you just lost that money.
Sorry, stoned and i rambled and i'm just going to submit this because i'm sure there's something good in this post.
What has always surprised me about Jobs is the amount of risk he was willing to take on. People forget what a huge leap it was to ditch everything that came before (including several up-and-coming products) and focus on OSX. The iPhone also represented a huge effort - a radical departure for Apple and radically different from other cell phones, if it hadn't been an immediate success Apple would only be a fraction of what it is today.
History is littered with the wreckage of companies that decided to change direction, diverting resources from existing customers to look for fresh fields. Apple somehow managed to do it several times to great success.
Another thing that strikes me about Apple is how old-fashioned the corporate culture seems to be (from the outside). They do business by figuring out what people want, and then selling it directly to the public with a minimum of fuss at a price that both parties can live with. Contrast this with their competitors in the computer and cell phone markets, who sell pretty much the same devices encumbered with "special offers", "free malware detection (for 30 days)", or annoying contracts, none of which customers actually desire. I can't see why other manufacturers haven't gotten the hint yet.
Um, no, it's not a surprise.
When your company is circling the drain, and all your previous products don't cut it, then yes, you bet everything on something new, because if you don't, your out of the race anyways. This is what jobs did with OSX, and led to his other stuff.
You people talk Jobs up like he was the messiah or something, but he was just a businessman that truely, got lucky. He got lucky by being able to take a company that was dead, give it a new purpose, and then capitalize on it. Now he's dead. Guess that's life for ya.
And if i'm wrong, and Jobs wasn't lucky, then apple will continue it's domiance in everything it puts out. Which in a small amount of time, we will know for sure.
More to the point, having a big ass nuke like this thing requires a big ass rocket to lift it. There are no countermeasures to prevent someone from shooting your one big ass nuke into bits before it can deliver it's yield; and it costs more to build and maintain than more modern designs.
Oh, and putting 3 to 10 smaller nukes on top of a smaller rocket with better guidance packages and available space for dummy warheads delivers way more destruction for way less money. Capitalism at it's finest!

Of course. Google themselves aren't making any money out of it - at least directly. There's only punitive damages to be got out of them. Ongoing revenues from companies profiting from Android make far more sense.
But no, that wasn't Ratzo's point. He was perfectly clear with what he said. He was just wrong.
Ya, he's like that a lot. He got so butthurt at me laughing at him once, that he made me a foe.
And what of the flip side? The people who really achieve in the field they studies at University, but wouldn't have been able to go were it not for student loans. Are they a price worth paying for libertarian ideology?
Can America afford to be less educated?
how about we make education free and stop fucking around with our future (ie, our kids)?
Even today the manufacturers of the consoles make losses on the hardware. There is simply no incentive to have a fast hardware cycle time. The longer you can make games (where the profit is raked in) on the same platform (console) the better.
The next generation of game consoles is in your hand. It's running either iOS 5, Ice Cream Sandwich or Mango, depending on why your interest lies (sorry, Android is the closest you're going to get to Linux).
The phones are selling such high volumes and adding capabilities so fast that any new hardware console, ostensibly designed for games only, will have a problem getting to critical mass. Not only are we in a post-PC world, we're in a post-game-console world as well.
Spoken like someone who knows nothing about video games, video game consoles and what gamers really want.
