I want to correct soemthing. Bill Gates does not give away money. He gives away stock that he owns. The foundation then sells that stock and turns it into money.
Bill Gates didn't actually pay for that stock so all he is giving away is potential income not actual money.
It's a great PR move. He comes off looking good, it does not cost him any money and it adds a perfume of charity on top of all the evil he wallows in.
Actually it's not deep linking either. Deep linking involves getting the content while avoiding the advertising.
This is simply a referal. You know what URLs are designed for. What the entire web is designed to do. Provide links from one document to another and all that.
No need to be cynical there are only two reasons. 1) Malice 2) Incompetence.
I doubt it's 1) because they are not blocking links from newsforge. Of course maybe somebody over there got pissed off at linux today for some weird reason but it seems unlikely given the "cut off my nose to spite my face" nature of it.
That leaves us with 2). Somebody made a mistake and blocked the wrong referrer.
I am sure somebody who works at CMP will post an explanation here before the conspiracy theories start flying.
He is not thinking about the problem the same way that you are.
What he is talking about is your regular business guy being able to write business rules himself instead of asking some programmer to code it for him.
My guess is that he is looking at how the naked objects people are solving problems and then extending it somehow, perhaps with a scripting language perhaps with a gui thingie.
What he does not realize however is that the business people don't even know the rules they want nor do they have the ability to articulate what their needs are. Most also don't want to spend even one minute writing a request for change so they are certainly not going to spend an hour wrangling with some sort of a rule engine.
Programming sucks because languages suck. Programs suck because languages suck.
every programmer has their own toolkit. Code that they wrote themselves to accomplish routine tasks. Every time they learn a new language the first thing they do is to translate their library.
What a collasal waste of time and effort. The only real exception to that rule are PERL programmers who have a wonderful tool like CPAN. All perl programmers know to look there first to see if somebody else has done it before.
There really is no need to do anything special. The judges already have the discretion to throw our frivolous suits. They don't and that's the problem. The solution is to somehow kick the judges in the ass so they will use their discretionary powers.
How about this. If a review panel finds that the lawsuit was frivolous the judge who didn't throw it out has to pay the fees for both lawyers.
Deliberately lying about the medicare bill. Stealing money from the indians. govt contracts to buddies. back room deals with energy companies. Calling people who disagree with them "terrorists" Never once bothering to attend a funeral of a brave soldier who gave his life for his country or even acknowledging their sacrifice.
It goes on and on. The most corrupt administration in recent history. The idea that they would go after a company that is funding their re-election is laughable.
I did the price comparison. The thing is I wanted a quiet PC and the G5 is nearly silent. By the time I added all the extras to make a quiet PC the price was comparable to the apple so I bought a G5. It's nice:)
I subscribe to both debian and freebsd security lists. I got my warning from debian a couple of days ago and patched the system and have been patiently waiting for my warning from freebsd. Apparently I should not hold my breath.
Every day I am so happy I use freebsd. It's truly awsome. Stable as a rock and secure as a safe.
Not really. In a recent speech the CEO of novell said that they are no longer an operating system company. They make their money selling things on top of an operating system like eDirectory, groupwise, red carpet, ximian connector etc.
It looks to me like they are keeping their focus on the enterprise which has very little use for YAST but is more then willing to pay for an awsome product like eDirectory or Zenworks.
I have spent the last two weeks banging my head against Active directory and let me tell you if my CIO said they were switching to Edirectory I would litereally kiss his ass and wash his car.
I am not disputing that. Of course it's central to the constitution. When the constitution was written there were 13 different "countries" they did not see themselves as belonging to a nation and were brought into a nation with promises of sovereignty. In other words it was a compromise. If you join our nation we will let you have lots of power to set your own laws.
Those days are gone. It's time to stop thinking like that. This is one nation, not 50 little nations.
The notion of a state is an artifact in the constitution. It should not be there.
Look at it this way. When we write the Iraqi constitution will we break them up into little states? No. When we wrote the Afghan constitution did we break them up into little sovereign states? No. We didn't do that despite the fact that there is almost nothing in common betweek a kurd and a shiite from the south. They hate each other more then any wyoming rancher hates a californian hippie and yet they don't get their own state.
I do indeed know how it works. I also think it works wrong when it works at all.
Right now the US is just black and white. You are either a democrat or a republican. Everybody else is shit on. If you are democrat living in the south you get shit on. If you are a republican living in NY you get shit on.
Half the country gets shit on because we have a stupid winner take all system.
"Or should we just chuck the whole Governor and State Legislature thing out all together too, and go with a government structure that is more centrally planned, like China's?"
Nice straw man there. Congratulations.
Of course there should be local politics and there will always be local politics. We just need to get this stupid idea of "independent states" out of our system. This is one nation under god not 50 little nations making their own laws and pitting their interests against each other.
The idea of states was left in the constitution as a compromise. It does not belong there.
The man does not even read the papers for gods sake. He is truly the blind idiot who sits up on a throne while the visiers whisper in his ear. "Saddam Hussein is responsible for 9/11 lets invade iraq", "make it so cheney!".
I don't think anybody thinks he is responsible for this shit. They just think he is stupid and easily duped by the people around him that's all.
When they say "ipod killer" they know the media will swallow it without thinking and write all kinds of stories about how the days of ipod are numbered and how apple is dying.
I could see where something like this could be useful. It's relatively trivial to cache your queries so that they are stored on the local FS for a while and then refreshed from the database periodically.
" But I think it would be more difficult to answer to a group if you didn't know where they were. "
Look this is the 21st century. Nobody actually visits their congress critter they email or fax them.
"but it seems that without some sort of boundaries imposed, a hypothetical politician could crap all over his supporters and then just convince a contingent in a different part of the country to vote for him."
Nothing wrong with that. Those other people deserve representation too.
Did you read my post? Please do so before replying.
Right now your state can get fucked over by a mere majority of the senate or the house. If you live in the rural west for example you may only have a one or two representitives whereas california has dozens.
My system is better because it breaks down the stupid "your community is your neighborhood" crap that's leftover crud from the 1700s. This is america, the concept of a state itself is out dated.

Ahh but where are the moderators?
No matter I already have pretty good karma.

Never.
That's why stupid laws are still in the books. Laws like "it's illegal to play violins on sundays" and crap like that.
THis is an industry which delights in re-inventing old technologies over and over again. It would not surprise me one bit if he re-implement COBOL.

Every language needs a CPAN.

If you think that suitability to children is the only or the most important criterea for public discourse then you are a poo poo head.

"The Bush Justice Dept., already burned over the Antitrust Settlement, will in no way allow this to go through."
Nah. They are too busy going after prominent donors to the Democratic party like Martha Stewart and Larry Ellison.
I doubt they will go after a prominent donor to the republican party.
"Hey don't touch that, it's concentrated evil".
That's from a movie (I forget which one). I think they should put that sign up in front of the MS campus.
Honestly how do those people sleep at night.

So far their plan is working brilliantly.
I could see where something like this could be useful. It's relatively trivial to cache your queries so that they are stored on the local FS for a while and then refreshed from the database periodically.
PHP does not FORCE you to combine your data and presentation. It has several great templating tools the most widely used is called "smarty".
PHP is just a language. Like all other languages there are frameworks build on top. Java has struts and php has smarty.
I don't mean to slight the rest of the MVC frameworks for php, I know there are lots of them.

This case is about open source VS MS. It's about MS being an abusive monopoly.
